* So Bhaktavachalam was CM until when?

* When did KK become CM for the first time?

I'm trying to understand at what point in his movies, did MGR go against KK in all those punches !!!

Bakthavadchalam was CM until DMK won for the first time and Anna became the CM in 1969 and he died in two years ,so kalainjar took over CM seat.

When Ulagam sutrum Vaaliban started MGR still in DMK ,Kalainjar was CM .Kalainjar sent off MGR from Airport when he went abroad for shooting ..But when USV in production ,problem started between MGR and kalainjar ,so finally MGR was suspended from Party .

So MGR's punch dialogues against kalainjar only stats from USV ..Before that all punch dialogues (including Naan aanaiyittal) directed to Congress.

Makes TOTAL SENSE !!!

I think a small correction in your post would be ... Anna became CM in 1967 and died in 1969 ...

Thanks for all the info !!

You are right Bay..Anna was CM from 67-69 .kalainjar took over in 1969..Problem between MGR and Kalainjar started in 1971.

The trouble seem to have started when MGR went to Kashmir for shooting Idhaya veenai .
Asked for Trade / commerce minister but MUkaa refused citing reasons that one cannot act and become a minister as per ther Constitution but MGR was unyielding.
So, to satisfy him, Mukaa influenced Indira Gandhi and got national award for Rickshawkaran ( at the same time NT's Savale samalee was released )

Mukaa also wanted MGR to give up cinema in lieu of ministerial berth which MGR said no.

Mukaa also parallely built up his son Mukaa Muthu on the same lines of MGR .

Oh, this is a very big story to narrate !

Engal Thangam , I believe MGR acted free of cost as the proceeds were supposed to be dedicated for DMK election funding.
Though the move ran for 100 days, I understand MGR didnt participate in the celebrations as by that time, the differences of opinion had build up between the 2

One piece of interesting information ( courtesy Mr. Manisegaran ) :

One song by name Naan alavodu rasipavan - was started by Valee and was searching for the next sentence . Mukaa promptly suggested the words :

EDHAYUM ALAVINDRI KODUPAVAN !!

MU.Ka may not have influenced indira gandhi to give national award to MGR, but surely the award had political connotations.

Imagine MGR as best actor, that too national award - unthinkable.

A song for the week end :

NAM NADU :

Nam naadu is a typical MGR movie . He challenges the anti social elements and destroys them at the end :D Usual formula but handled nicely .

A movie wherein a govt employee , MGR takes up the challenge to cut to size all the anti social elements and corruption that prevail at large in govt depts.

MGR loses his job but takes up challenge to annihilate his rivals.

Midway, some maaru vesham for him also ! :D and a song comes in .

To me this song looks very different & unique becaz of the inconsistent rhythms & heavy trumphets at regular intervals !
Also looks absolutely western . I know MGR appears in disguise and sings along with JJ.

Seems MSV had tried new things & had experimented a lot in this song

Cheers to TMS and LRE for their customary charming rendition . LRE always a good match for JJ !

MGR prevails through the words - Paneeril kulipadhu maligai nenjam . Kaneeril midhapadhu ezaigal ullam

Nalla perai vanga vendum pillaigale has lots of message for children !

"Ninaiththathai nadaththiyE mudippavan naan... naaan... naaan".

Terrific 'Preludes' by the genious MSV with trumpet, drums, guitar, flutes and also vocal chorus.

The costumes and 'maaru vesham' of Jayalalitha (with golden hair) will be wonderful. MGR's costumes, as usual Jigina coat and with a horrible white framed sun-glass.

TMS and LRE will be in peak

"பன்னீரில் குளிப்பது மாளிகை நெஞ்சம்
தன் கண்ணீரில் மிதப்பது ஏழைகள் உள்ளம்
படைத்தான் ஒரு உலகம்
பணம்தான் அதன் உருவம்
எதுவும் இங்கு நடக்கும்
இது ஏன் என்று எதிர்காலம் விடை கூறட்டும்"

excuse me ! guess it would be better if you are bit more knowledgeable about costumes and appearance :D
Jayalalitha blonde wigged and both MGR Jayalalitha appeared in 'Broadway costumes'..its not jikina or horrible white glasses..they are
known as 'attire broadway costumes' that modifies the appearance in order to conceal the wearer's identity .
ninaiththai nadathiye mudipavan naan'..such a scence
then again its mgr's thoughts and feelings Vaali expressed

Thennatu Gandhi was an obvious ref. to AA only

But my grievance on you is that you are not giving the links on a saveable format . Pl make it as wmv format so that we all can store and preserve it forever

[tscii:f7100aa6c6]Today's song is one of my MGR favourites !

This beautiful poetic song was also picturised well . The dance steps by MGR and SD will be nice and simple .

Every sentence ends with NILA ! and both TMS and PS will give additional stress to the last 2 words – Idhe nilaa , adhe nilaa !!

Some guitar interludes add flavour to the song . One of my all time MGR favourite songs .

Wish to present with lyrics :

andru vandhadhum idhE nilaa
indru vandhadhum adhE nilaa
endrum ulladhu orE nilaa
iruvar kannukkum orE nilaa
aah aah iruvar kannukkum orE nilaa

ambigaapadhi kanda nilaa
amaraavadhiyai thindra nilaa
kamban paadiya velli nilaa
kaviyil aadiya pillai nilaa
aah aah kaviyil aadiya pillai nilaa

kaadhal romeo kanda nilaa
kanni juliet vendra nilaa
paavai laila paarththa nilaa
paalaivanaththin vanna nilaa
aah aah paalaivanaththin vanna nilaa

naaduthOrum vandha nilaa
naagareegam paarththa nilaa
paarththu paarththu saliththadhilaa

I always love this song from UrimaiKural

Here also MGR calls ANNA

நல்லவர் லட்சியம் வெல்வது நிச்சயம்
அண்ணா அன்று சொன்னார்
என்றும் அது தான் சத்தியம்

Amongst the cream of classical numbers of MGR-MSV combination, I will consider this song in top league !

A type of compo which separates MSV from other composers . Classical raga with mellisai ! I heard somewhere its Bagesri. Experts may clarify pls.

Also, this song is another example of MGR's taste for classical music !

The movie was released when the political environment was too too hot and boiling. Yes , it was while having a break during the making of this movie that MGR was sacked from DMK .

What happened next is history :D

Makkal thilagam acts as a scavenger from a very poor under developed area and brings them up by his efforts ! :D

Another character dies in the first scene itself , being pushed down by a group of villains.

Well, this movie has some o/s songs like Padumbothu naan thendral katru which I will post them later.

IMHO, this is the best song of this movie

Featuring MGR and Manjula

MGR in 2 roles but the second one appears after the death of the first .

And finally, what a voice of yours TMS sir :D We salute you and PS Madam for extrordinary singing .
Listen to the great song here :

A song for the week end.

Puratchi thalaivar, son of a head of a group of robbers , brought up in that wicked environment but converts the whole gang for good and finally achieves his mission !

Did Thalaivar ever fail on any occasion ?? :D

Also gets imprisoned midway for reasons which get revealed during climax.

Saroja Devi is the pair . A black and white movie .

Movie starts with a thundering MGR - Thai mel aanai , thamiz mel aanai !

Ok. to the song of the day :

Starts with exchanges between the 2 lovers.

Ofcourse, its TMS and PS only.

Idhayam endroru ededuthen
adhil ethanayo naan ezudhi vaithen
ezudhiyadhellam un pugaz padum
enakadhu podhum
verenna vendum !

Its a typical MGR duet song .

Simple but delightful melody by MSV

Happy week end :D

A thunderous and peppy Puratchi thalaivar song for the week end from Deiva Thai.

MGR , from police dept , his Dad who had a nice past is actually the main villain ( Asokan ) while his Thai is Pandari Bhai.

Did thalaivar ever yield to emotions or pressures ? No, he will be hell bent to capture the villain and finally does so but in the end Pandari Bhai proves her class as a mother getting stuck between husband and son !

The pair ? Its Saroja Devi !

Twist dance also

This song is another classic example of the variety that MSV –TKR gave , especially to MGR !

A thunderous start . Drums , bangoos . Will involuntarily make your feet moving and dance

Also has a lengthy postlude challenging the prelude !

But it’s a solo for TMS . Rare one no ? normal MGR love songs were all duets and this one is exception and exceptionally composed.

Superb BGM and pleasant interludes

TFML thalaivaa , links as usual pls :D

You are correct Saradha madam,

I saw her name in the title of Kudiyirudha Koyil.

Why she did not write further?. Any domination or threatening from the existing lyric writers at that time?. (same like from Latha Mangeshkar and Asha Boshle for Vani Jayaram at Bombay?)

Kungumapottin mangalam ! Incomparable beauty :D . Only the start was a mild inspiration from a hindi song Tujena premapathu ...... but MSV had developed it further in his own inimitable style - MELODY .
The movie IMHO is one of the very best of MSV . So so so many wonderful songs spread through the movie Kudiyirundha kovil.

If someone can throw a light on how MGR extracted tunes from Mellisai Mannar for this movie ?
Normally when a movie has many songs, one or two might not be good ones but this is an exceptionally great movie for MSV .

[tscii:48dca946f5]NADAGAMELLAM KANDEN UNDHAN AADUM VIZIYILE.

MGR sings at Padmini and Padmini’s expressive eyes will roll in sync with the words !

What amazes me is the picturisation ! Some special effects are being seen in the song and one character getting super imposed while another , zipped is all innovation those days !

Only few movies of Makkal Thilagam showed him facing death in the end and this 1956 release Madurai veeran was one such.

The movie actually is a depiction of the legend on Madurai veeran , a warrior who served under Tiruchy and Pandya kingdom.

Due to wrong information about MV, the king punishes him to death through a severe punishment - Cut off both legs and hands.
Before he could realize the truth ( yes, the Goddess of Madurai screams at the king that he had committed the biggest mistake of his life ) , the unfortunate thing happens and MGR dies .

This is one of the most popular movies of MGR.

MGR had 2 pairs – Banumathy and Padmini

I believe, this Madurai veeran is being worshipped by many .

Music was by the great G.Ramanathan . 2 songs are real noteworthy . One is Eichu pizaikum thozile sari dhana enni parunga ( composed on the lines of Dheena karunakarane Nataraja , Neela kantane – of MKT ) both composed by GR only.

The second one and the most popular number is Nadagamellam kanden.

Villain ?? Its T.S. Balaiah . Yes. Those days, TSB was a big villain and later he moved over to comic characters and did extremely well.

One scene I cant control laughter is the one when TSB will remove his sword on seeing MGR. On seeing this action, MGR also will remove his sword. Immediately TSB will say . Indru naan viratham . Sandai poda mateen ! Saying this, he will move away.

A young and aggressive Veeran ( adopted son of a cobbler ) saves the princess of Tiruchi from being drowned and the resultant love makes him an obvious enemy to the top guns in the kingdom and TSB was one such.. However, the king , convinced soon , agrees for their wedding. The king also makes him , the leader of the army.

Under request from the then king of Madurai, MGR is being sent to put an end to the growing menace of a group of robbers headed by Sangili Karuppan. Taking the help of Padmini, the dance exponent of the Madurai kingdom , MGR manages to eliminate the robbers but in the process , enters into the bad books of the Madurai king for having won the heart of Padmini. An unjust king orders for the execution and thus the most unforeseen thing that can happen to a MGR movie happens.

Along with Madurai Veeran, both his lovers also die and reach heaven.

And who did the screen play and dialogues ?? Its Kavignar Kannadasan . D.Yoganand was the director.

Those days, the spontaneous choice for such roles naturally went to Makkal Thilagam only .

And the movie was not short of stars – Here is the huge list of very popular actors/ actress of that period - N.S.Krishnan, , T.S.Baliah, O.A.K.Thevar, MMA Chinnappa Thevar and T.K.Ramachandran Banumathy, Padmini , T.A.Mathuram, E.V.Saroja .

Both Banumathy and Padmini excel . MGR will look absolutely handsome .

One of the super hit movies of Puratchi thalaivar.

As usual, a song for the week end

MGR always chose a particular set of people and played a character as part of them . For instance, in Netru indru nalai, he plays as a scavenger . We all know about Rickshawkaran, Kavalkaran, Vivasayee. Yeah, the list is countless.

In Padagotee , he is part of a fishermen community, MGR realizes that there are subgroups within a community which hampers the progress of their main livinghood , that of catching the fish and selling it. The villain Nambiar , who is very powerful and influential makes his moves to ensure that there is no unity within the fishermen community.
So Thalaivar takes up this onerous task of bringing togetherness by all ways and means. You can see him working very hard and tirelessly towards his pursuit of giving a good life for this set of people.
Few scenes will even show MGR meeting some govt officials requesting them to address their concerns and will get positive response also.
Also, some maru vesham ( one that of an old man & another as valayal vyapari ) .
Once he even crosses over to his so called rival group as an old man and tries to bring harmony by saving their chief Ramdass. So all out efforts were made to bring unity.

AND FINALLY HE SUCCEEDS IN HIS MISSION. :D

Inbetween , he finds some very little time to chat with his lover SarojaDevi .

So , he does not want to waste time. He runs runs and runs at high speed and finally reaches the spot where he meets SD .

And here comes ANOTHER WONDERFUL/ DELIGHTUL/ SCINTILLATING / MINDBLOWING composition from MSV-TKR

Thodaamal naan malarndhen
sutaal punn sivakkum
sudaamal kann sivandhen

Iruvar ondraanaal , oruvar endranaal
ilamai mudivadhillai

Wonderful interludes ! Appadiye konjum kuralil PS Madam ! TMS patri sollavaa vendum ? Avar MGR polave vaanzdhavar allavaa !

A day etched in the memory of most Tamils worldwide and especially in the minds of fans of Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M. G. Ramachandran.
The day he left this material world. 19 years has passed since. But his memories remain.

The height of emotional response that 'MGR' could evoke was evident when in 1987 during a critical illness, 22 people committed suicide in the hope their deaths would save him! Stories of poor people selling their blood in order to get money to see his films on first release are legendary!

Born Marudur Gopalamenon Ramachandran in Kandy, Sri Lanka, his family moved to Tamil Nadu where they lived in poverty. When he was 6, he joined a theatre group - the Madurai Original Boys. Here he picked up acting, dancing and swordplay.

MGR made his screen debut in Ellis R. Duncan's Sati Leelavathi (1936) but his first major breakthrough came much, much later with Rajakumari (1947).

MGR's 1950s screen persona in adventure films constructed an image of political as well as physical invincibility. Often the themes of his films were derived from heroic ballads which are part of the oral tradition of rural Tamil Nadu. For example - Madurai Veeran (1956), one of his most popular films, is based on the legend of Madurai Veeran, a popular deity of Southern Tamil Nadu. His legend has been the subject of various ballads and plays and this was the second filmed version of the story.

In the 1960s MGR turned to more 'realistic' fantasies mostly in a contemporary setting often playing someone from the oppressed class - a peasant, taxi driver or fisherman. For millions of fans, his image as the knight in shining armour, saving damsels in distress and being totally dutiful towards his mother was in fact a reality. Mother tongue, motherland and motherhood were what he based his popularity on. To quote M.S.S. Pandian in The Image Trap: M.G. Ramachandran in Film and Politics...

"The social universe of the MGR is a universe of asymmetrical power.......The conflict between the upper caste/ class oppressors and MGR as a subaltern, and its resolution forms the core of the film. MGR, in the course of the conflict, appropriates several signs or symbols of authority or power from those who dominate."

MGR used food, colour patterns (black and red, symbols of the DMK) and masquerades (often through double roles of oppressor and oppressed) to construct this universe. In Engal Thangam (1970) for example, MGR playing a truck driver Thangam, fights, sings, cares for the poor and preaches against smoking and drinking. The DMK colours - black and red are frequently featured in the clothes he wears. He even appears as himself in the opening scene at a Small Savings Function. Thangam is in the audience and even refers to him as 'vathiyar' (teacher), the reverent title by which he was known to his fans!

MGR had joined the DMK party in 1953 and remained its member till 1972. This included a brief stint in the Madras Legislative Council from 1962 - 64, being a member of the Legislative Assembly (1967) when the party won the state elections and the DMK Treasurer (1970).

He fell out with the DMK chief Karunanidhi and used the DMK's propaganda idiom against the DMK itself in Nam Naadu (1969). In 1972 he set up the rival Anna - DMK party claiming allegiance to the DMK's founder, the late Annadurai.

In 1977, his party renamed the AIADMK won the state elections in alliance with Indira Gandhi's Congress party. MGR became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and was re-elected for three consecutive terms. As Chief Minister, he organized a totalitarian crackdown on all political dissent while introducing populist schemes such as the Chief Minister's Nutritious Meal Programme.

Having survived a bullet wound when he was shot at by fellow actor M.R. Radha in 1967 (which affected his speech), he achieved demi-god status following a paralytic stroke in 1984 which he survived for three years thus acquiring the label 'thrice born'. When he died in 1987, his funeral procession was attended by over 2 million people!

A temple has been built in Madras with MGR as deity.

[tscii:0b29e77e46]When Veerangan ( Nadodee) gets imprisoned along with many other revolutionaries under the pretext that they are inciting a anti kingdom violence, he is put inside a cell Much to his surprise he sees the cell incharge in deep sleep. So what does he do then ?

He teases the warden incharge with arguably the best meaningful song of the 20th century in tfm. THOONGADHEY THAMBI THOONGADHEY .SOMBERI ENDRA PEYAR VAANGADHEY ( I don’t think such type of a song will appear again )

This 1958 release super hit NADODI MANNAN was Puratchi Thalaivar’s first home production which turned the face of tamil cinema industry and which gave a strong foundation for him to soon emerge as first super star of tamil cinema
Whats so special in this song ?
•Nalla pozudhai ellam thoongi keduthavargal naatai keduthadhudan thaanum ketaar
•Silar allum pagalum verum kallai irundhuvittu , adhirshtam illai endru alatti kondaar
•Vizithu kondor ellam pizaithu kondaar
•Unpol , kuratai vittor ellam , kotai vitaar !!

The song doesn’t end so easily here. More and more striking messages on why and how a person loses in his life :
•Por padai dhanil thoongiyavan VETRI IZANDHAAN
•Uyar pallaiyil thoongiyavan KALVI IZANDHAAN
•Kadaidhanil thoongiyavan MUDHAL IZANDHAAN
•Konda kadamayil thoongiyavan PUGAZ IZANDHAAN
•Sila porupulla manidharin thookathinaal PALA PONNANA VELLAIELLAM THOONGUDHAPAA

The golden voice of TMS , the cheerful and majestic / handsome MGR , the simple but captivating tune and above all the splendid , mindblowing lyrics – all combined has made this song , ever memorable

This song is household now as anyone who is seen sleeping will be questioned by this only !

IMHO, this song should feature in school books . Penned by the immortal Pattukotai Kalyanasundaram for a situation inside the prison. As there is a big pipe which runs through the entire length of the prison cell and a small hole is being made to allow air, another revolutionary group member Banumathy listens to the song evey inch and appreciates the contents .as the camera moves back and forth between MGR , the prison guards and Banumathy’s cell which is in upper floor.

What happens at the end is all we are familiar with to a typical MGR song – Yes, all the guards dance to the song as MGR makes them dance to his tune and it ends on a happy note !

It’s a simple but nice picturisation of one of the evergreen songs of TFM. Makkal Thilagam uses a small plate to put thalam while singing with his customary charming smile and with a small beard ( to differentiate ).

There is another story also behind the song – Kavignar Kannadasan who was originally supposed to write songs didn’t turn up for a reasonable period. An impatient MGR ( after all own production no ? and having given all his property as a security to obtain funding ) had to call up Pattukotai KS to write a song to be conscious of the importance of time so that Kavignar will get a sound lesson of his life. But Kavignar enjoyed the song more( having taken it sportingly ) and had proudly told everyone that this was the only song which was written about him !!

Guru of Mellisai Mannar MSV,the veteran composer S.M.Subbaiah Nayudu was the MD for this top class movie . SMS was one of those who shared a good wrapport with MGR and its no wonder that he called him for his first own movie.

This movie has some nice songs and another one which I like is KANNIL VANDHU MINNAL POL – for MGR and the second heroene Saroja Devi., written by the late Suradha Yeah, the Banumathy character gets extinguished to accommodate the new star .

It is said , MGR nurtured tall plans on making this movie for long but had to wait for the ideal time to start. He considered this movie so special and decisivie in his cine career that he stopped to work in other films and dedicated his entire loyalists as well his hard earned money to create this movie. He was very particular and very focussed on his make up as he has to do the two key roles- that of Nadodee and Mannan , the heroine Banumathy didn’t have the patience to wait for longer duration . This resulted in a misunderstanding & consequently MGR had no option but to kill the first pair and also change the story to entertain another heroene character and that’s how Sarojadevi stepped in as a princess .

However, Minimum Guarantee Ramachandran ( MGR ) and Banumathy had acted together for few more movies and the misunderstanding soon faded . It was the Chief Minister MGR who also made her the chief of music college run by the state govt during the mid 80s.

This movie had another interesting feature-The second half ,all colour !

[tscii:3321999c75]The story of Nadodi Mannan :

The story is very complex

The kid princess of the kingdom of Rathnapuri ( Sarojadevi ) gets kidnapped by the chief guru ( Veerappa ) who brings her up in an island with a vested interest only to marry her and rule the kingdom later when the king dies.
When the old king dies, 2 persons were shortlisted for the pivotal position – Pingalan ( Nambiar ) and Marthandan ( MGR 1 ) .Though Veerappa prefers Nambiar , as the public and generals support Marthandan, he gets selected as a king and the coronation date also gets fixed.

The intermediary period between the death of king and Marthandan’s takeover sees anarchy and misrule which results in many rebel groups rising in revolt against the leaderless rule and the vivasayee turned warrior Veerangan ( MGR 2 ) and Banumathy were one such belonging to different groups.

Both get imprisoned while revolting and after hearing this epic song Thoongadhey thambi , they happen to meet eye to eye. As their main mission will be the same, their hearts also converge and result in love .

Banumathy’s father was an old guard of the dead king and a well wisher to the dynasty. Like what happens even today, on any good occasion, some prisoners of good conduct get released and thus Veerangan and Banumathy come out but due to the similarity between the 2, Veerangan gets mistaken as Marthandan and now arises the confusion.

Before the mudi sootu vizaa , Veerappa , by all ways and means separates Marthandan from his wife and takes him as captive and puts him in an unknown place and also asks Veerangan to help him as a dummy king for sometime while parallely organising for poisoning Marthandan.

One rebel group mistakes Veerangan as the new king and tries to kill him.but he wins the fight and it so happened that he meets Marthandan.who comes to know about the problems of the countrymen in their day to day life and the poverty that pervades around . The king designate Marthandan assures Veenrangan that he will solve the problems of poor after he gets sworn in. On that night during the dinner the poisoned drink makes Marthandan unconscious. The news reaches Veerappa who tries to make Pingalan as the King.

The maruthuvar advices about the condition of the King, that he will be alright but will remain unconscious for 2 or 3 days due to the effect of the poison. One commander convinces Veerangan to act as the King only for a day.( Now you all will realize how that one day CM concept was used by Shankar in Mudhalvan )

Veerangan accepts and rushes to the coronation ceremony. And in right time takes the crown in his own inimitable manner. Veerappa could not believe his eyes, that Marthandan is alive some thing should have happened. He sends his henchmen to confrim the facts and realizes that Marthandan indeed was alive and sends him to the same theevu where Sarojadevi is being brought up.

After the ceremony, the Commander comes to know the drama of the Chief Priest and again convinces Veerangan to continue as the King. Though Veerangan is not a power monger ( Avar makkal thalaivar allavaa !! ) he accedes to be the caretaker king and comes out with many PURATCHIGARAMANA KOLGAIGAL that will change the condition of the ezaigal and pirpaduthapattorgal. However, the richer community will be totally against the new codes .

Banumathy makes Veerangan meet her father who narrates the whole background of the princess and the kingdom. And what kind of a person Veerappa is.

While Veerangan fights Pingalan and captures him, his lover Banumathy gets killed by Pingalan’s men.

Now comes the defining moment of the movie – The Rajaguru Veerappa removes all his vesham and reveals his true colour ! Yes, he announces proudly that his original objective is to marry Sarojadevi and become the king which stuns Nambiar who realizes now that Veerappa actually had double crossed him. So he waits for his moment to take revenge on Veerappa.

Same time Veerangan reaches the Island, and accidentally steps into the place where Saroja Devi lives and narrates about her true identity and requests her to assist him in finding Marthandan. SD also helps him . In the process, she also gets fascinated by Veerangan.

Now from the captivity, Marthandan also tries to escape but gets hurt while swimming away from the island. . However, saves the King from drowning. And both of them unite to save the Princess and fights to finish of the crooked plans of Veerappa and also finally reach the kingdom. Marthandan finally takes over the kingdom and assures everyone that he will restore democracy and will be the leader of the masses and will do good to the poor.

Makkal thilagam , as always his wont, successfully displays the distinction between the 2 characters – for instance, the king Marthandan will always follow the 2 fingers twitching the nose as his mannerism Besides, Marthandan will use nice lavish costumes and will always carry a cheerful and charming smile, and friendly type. The Veerangan, as the name says, shows his class by being very aggressive in dialogue delivery and peerless in fights.

Kavignar Kannadasan plays a remarkable part in the dialogues and lyrics. To quote a few example :
•when Veerangan ( when he acts as makeshift king ) gets pushed by Commanders to use his authority as a king, he vehemently and characteristically reacts by saying –“Neengal aranmaniyilirundhu makkalai paarkireergal- You are looking the People from the Palace, I am watching the Palace with the People”
•Another shot which follows the above dialogue when he was again questioned that he is not aware of the authority of the Kings,( as he is a Nadodee ) he says , “Ennudaya ippodhaya thotram, ennudaya manasatchiyai matradhu- My appearance has changed but not my conscience, I am quite aware that I am not a true King, I am not going to administer for centuries , but in this short tenure I have to do more good for the Poor”

As a producer / maker , he exactly knew how to create awesome sets for the Mudisoottu vizaa The same MGR also used table shots for the island. The sum he had spent for the sets, costumes and meal for the crew , I understand would have costed another movie !

His elder brother Chakrabani was so frustrated once that when the crew members requested him suddenly for buying a big rope, Chakrabani yelled at them ENNA ELLARUM THOOKU POTTUKITTU SAAGA POROMAA ?? Such was the kind of money flown for the making of the movie.

I have watched this movie several times but still continue to wonder the technical expertise of MGR in making this movie and the punch dialogues that he uses at regular intervals and the visionary approach to capturing the power later. There is another song between MGR and Banumathy – Nadu nalam perum thittam ….which dwelves at length about what he intends to do to poor people and the masses if he takes charge .

I also remember watching one programme wherein Chakrabani said that finally when the movie got released in Mount Road area, the swelling crowds that gathered beyond the theatres and the uncontrollable long queues in Chennai made them do a NIMMADHI PERUMOOCHU.

Actually ,MGR went to several top directors then but they all suggested him to do direction also as he was very much capable of doing that .

I have seen the audience those days were so involved with the movie that they used to applaud the introduction of both the MGRs , as if another new hero being introduced !

And the movie was not short of some emotional scenes for the fans – one was that when the wife of Marthandan realizes that MGR 2 is not her hubby, he throws a question - Sagodharee, ennai neengal nambugireergalaa ?
For which the queen will say :
Naan mattum illai, indha naade ungalai nambugiradhu !!

Needless to say, such dialogues bring raptures amongst the fans.
At the time of making the epic movie MGR said INDHA PADAM VETRI ADAINDHAAL NAAN MANNAN. THOLVI ADAINDHAAL NADODEE.

And what happened is history . One of the most successful movies of Makkal thilagam. I am not really stunned to hear that the same movie grossed huge collections when it was re-released recently and earned huge collections !!

A highly entertaining movie with all the basic successful elements – thrill, nice songs, short but striking dialogues, nice picturisation, costumes, tireless screenplay etc

The Legend Called MGR

Very few individuals have become legends in their own lifetime. Among them, Bharath Ratna Dr. MG Ramachandran or MGR, as he is popularly known, occupies a prominent position.

His charisma still holds a magical sway among millions.

Indiaglitz salutes the magnetic personality that he was and continues to be, even many years after his death.

On his death anniversary, indiaglitz pays homage to this great legend with a visit to his residence at Ramavaram and his memorial at Marina.

Another Puratchi thalaivar movie with terrific songs .

Rich girl Saroja Devi is being chased by many to kill her but Thalaivar is always there to rescue :D

She also joins a circus group midway and the story goes on further . The climax unveils a rather surprise villain ( Villie ) - Kanchana

This SOTD is a razy fast paced composition from MSV-TKR.

TMS and LRE for MGR and Kanchana I think.

The interludes are innovative and western !

Kalyana naal parka chollalamaa is an extrordinary song which will feature later
Yaaraithaan nambuvadho bethai nenjam is another class song by PS

The interesting aspect of this song is that L.R.Iswari just does the humming part while TMS is the lead singer but so lilting is that humming that one will get tempted to hear again for the humming .

[tscii]Ninety years ago, a baby boy was born to a migrant couple, Gopala Menon and Sathyabama, in a ‘line-room’ of a tea estate in Kandy. Later, this baby boy would grow into a leader with the name Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran (popularly adored by Tamils all over the world with the acronym MGR).

Maruthur was the ancestral village in the Kerala state from where his parents hailed from. Many have ridiculed the uncertainty of his birth date, though MGR had used 17 January 1917 in his personal documents. One should sympathise with MGR on this matter because he was born to an Indian immigrant family in a tea plantation in Ceylon, which was then under British colonial rule. Way back in 1917, the health care facilities available for the plantation workers were atrocious, leave alone the requirements related to birth registration. That he survived into adulthood itself was an achievement.

Though as a two-year old he was taken to Kumbakonam by his mother (who had been widowed after the birth of MGR), the destiny would make it that in his last five years of life, MGR would again have close links with the Tamils in the land of his birth. After landing in Tamil Nadu, MGR would rise in his professional ranks with perseverance, hard work and the smile of Lady Luck. He reached the ‘top’, step by step; 10 years as a vaudeville child actor, 10 years as an apprentice actor with secondary roles in movies, 30 years as an ‘uncrowned king’ in the Tamil movie land and finally 10 years as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Having experienced poverty personally during his young days and forfeiting the opportunity to have a formal education, MGR would see to it that at least one song in his movie had some educational value to the average man.

"Irunthaalum Marainthaalum, peer solla vendum,
Ivar poola yaarendru, uur solla vendum
Ivar poola yaarendru, uur solla vendum."

17th January 2007

My dear puratchi Talaivar,

Wherever you are, today is the day, ninety years ago (or is it?) you were born. You were sent here on a mission. A mission that you, only you, know what. We know some, we have seen some, we have read some, we have listened to some.

But there is more...only you know that.

You were loved, you were respected, and you were despised. More loved than despised. Those despised you had issues, that's all. But they will agree the power you vield over millions of hearts. The power of love.

How many just wasted their life away when they learned that you are no more. Why? What have you done to them? Those flickering images on screen. The seat of power that you sat on. That smile. That graceful wave of hand. The assurance of goodwill. The assurance that all will be alright, for you are here.

And then, you were gone. Blank. Tamil nadu, Tamil film industry has not been the same again, good or bad.

My father is a poor man. He had nothing to hand to us brothers, but the love for cinema. We inherited that plus a little bit of the greatest treasure of his called, "MGR Fanatiscm".

In my teens, I was so absorbed by your films and songs. I am now a bigger fan of your 'brother' Nadigar Tilagam. But the funny thing is, now, after fifteen years, I have difficulty recalling lyrics of NT's songs, but at the snap of the finger, I can recall the lyrics of all my favourite songs of yours.

Why? Then, I was crazy of you. Now, I am intrigued by you. I grab my hand on any literature about you. I learned so much about you. But the more I learn, the more I realise that I don't know who you are.

You are, to us, what you want us to know. You kept the rest of you to yourself. And what we know is the image of one of the greatest person ever to live in this planet. That is all we know. And that is all we need to know.

Sometimes back, I swore never to write in this thread of yours...thanks to some unnecessary arguments. But I take that back. I take it back, because you wouldn't like it. You would want me to learn from others in this thread, and share my own love for the world you created for us with the rest. I shall. I abide by your often spoken rule on 'sharing'.

So, my dear Puratchi Talaivar. Many happy returns of the day. You are not here, but you are there, somewhere, watching us kids with that enigmatic smile of yours.

Happy Birthday.

Your once fan, and now, student,

Rakesh Kumar
Malaysia.

Today being Puratchi Thalaivar's birthday, thought of putting some special song & came to my mind, this number :D

The start, the ludes , the picturisation , all terrific ! MGR appearing like a mexican bull fighter & Rajashri playing the other part , all fascinating sight to watch !

MGR's arrival is preceded by trumphet blowing and drum beating followed by nice flow of guitar chords !

A movie which so many many wonderful songs by Mellisai Mannar .

This time, its TMS with L.R.Iswari , both in peak form

MGR , playing double action , one being brought up by villain Nambiar while the other one is brought up by his mother Pandaribhai. The scenes when the senior MGR meets with his mother are nice ones to watch .

Ultimately, the good and the noble prevail :D

A week end song of Thalaivar from Oru thai makkal featuring MGR and JJ. This movie is after the bullet wound & you can see that his voice is broken .

This movie also has another beautiful song - Kanna endhan kadhalan !

To the SOTD , it may look simple but the tune is a lilting melody . Its once again the great TMS-PS combination doing wonders with their customary improvisation here and there

Aayiram kannukku virundhagum

MGR , SUPPOSED TO ACT AS JESUS

Ravindran ,one of the story writers of MGR said once that in 1970 MGR was about to act in the Film named "Yesunathar" (JESUS CHRIST) a grand opening for the Movie was held then.

MGR gave various poses as JESUS.

A month or so, the film was dropped because MGR refused to act.

The reasons what do you think will be? That MGR got a low deal or his call sheet problem?

NO!!!

When Ravindran queried MGR why did he turned down the offer, MGR said when he went to some villages he saw his still he posed as Jesus were used for worshiping. That he doesn't like and that is the reason for turning down the offer.

And here is the photo of MGR posing as Jesus !

MGR and JESUS dont stand anywhere close. Wise decision by him!

I CANT BUT ADMIRE his role in PADAGOTI.

The song

"tharai mel pirakka vaithaan" for once really depicted him as a good actor. His eyes would exhibit pain of a fisherman.

MGR attracts to a good extent, all ppl, who are not his fans too. Thats his BIGGEST ASSET.

Thanks for the nice information Nakeeran sir :)
IMHO, I don't see anything wrong for an actor to don the roles of GODS. Remember NTR had done this before. But the reason is the *impact* that will be created. Good decision by him. We should note that he went on to reject the same after seeing the reaction from the public (workshipping him)

Friend Nakeeran...the news about MGR donning Jesus is news to all of us.....inspite of MGR rejecting the role of Jesus due to people worshipping the poster of his pose of Jesus, people today still worship MGR as their GOD.....

At that time, he has not left DMK. I think if he were to do the role, he'd come into flak with his own party people. Remember, when he dressed up as Lord Muruga for one of the songs, he came under criticism from DMK people?

Plus, he would have been too old to play Christ, even though he still looked good. He had always used Christ, alongside Bhudda in his songs (Buddhan Yesu Gandhi). But it would have been interesting to note how he would have portrayed Christ. Would it have been performance oriented or MGR-istic? We will never find out.

Aaaaand....here's the worst part. The fans, then, would not be able to accept the climax, even though there is resurrection. The last time MGR died on screen, it was havoc!

But still, it would have been a milestone in his career.

I heard another reason. At that time ,there was a setiment (rumour or not,I am not sure)people who act as christ in movies and dramas dies soon after that .

groucho070

Joe, I think if you put all those rumours together, acting as Christ is a no-no. And MGR is definitely not the kind of man to believe in those 'sentiment. If he wanna do it, he'd do it, no matter what. Look at USV. It could have just died out, he wanted to do it and bloody hell he did it!

On Christ, I think he would have made calculations and decided that it is not worth the effort. He was at the peak of his political career (before the clash with MK, of course) and this may be a risky move, considering that it will be a religious-oriented movie. He had always moved away from acting in those kind of movie, thus earning love and respect from fans of all religion. It's okay to play a christian character; but to play Christ himself may divide his fans. Or so, I think.

Groucho sir ,

I thought the other way. :D

The fans would have expected the climax to change totally & dramatically that the Jews would have apologised to the Christ Jesus pleading his mercy :D
See , in many of his movies, the villain will be made to realize his sins / mistakes and will apologise to MGR before he gets taken away by the Police :)
So, we can expect the same treatment here also.

I shudder to imagine what could have happened to the theatre screens if they had shown the Jesus ( MGR ) as dead in the end.
The screen would have been dddddddddddddduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrr

Forget it. I think in the early 70s MGR wanted to play different roles ( with less number of fight scenes ) to suit with his advancing age. Mind you, he was 53 in 1970 when USV was made.
See, he tried Naan en pirandhen - you know the story well.
Also Pallandu vazga can be categorised in the same league.

So probably, even Jesus must have been such an attempt by MGR to move gradually to character roles and say goodbye to movies

Anbe vaa was another example ( movie sans fights )

1. Poivaa nadhi alaye
2. Enna sugam

MGR always kept KVM in high esteem. FYI , for Adimaipen ( Another MGR directed movie ) KVM only composed.

Sometime back Joe sir remarked that for many songs of yesteryears many thought that it was of MSV but actually were of KVM. I argued with him but now I realize that what he said is true 8-)

Whenever I listen to this song, automatically, I get motivated

Such a power lyric

Aarilum saavu noorilum saavu

Karuvinil valarum mazalayin uyiril
dhairiyam valarpal thamiz annai !!

Vaanzdhavar kodi maraindhavar kodi
makkalin manadhil nilaipavar yaar ( This sentence befits MGR the most )

TMS sings at a very high pitch with minimum of fuss and thats his greatness !

MGR , riding on a horse sings this o/s song of yesteryears.

Mellisai Mannar MSV and TKR composed which is one of their best albums as well

[tscii:bc65261c2d]We all know that Makkal Thilagam produced & directed 3 movies which were super hits also :

1. Nadodi Mannan - 1957
2. Adimai penn - 1969
3. Ulagam sutrum valiban - 1970-73 ( started in 70 but released in 73 )

Adimai penn was one movie which had a very interesting storyline .

2 MGRs but the first one dies well before the second one surfaces.

MGR 2 gets brought up inside a prison cell whose height is deliberately shortened so that he will not grow. Consequently, MGR walks in a bent manner ( you can see this in the initial stages )

THIS MOVIE HAD SOME VERY GOOD ACTING BY JJ , PLAYING 2 ROLES , ONE THAT OF A COMMON WOMAN AND ANOTHER THAT OF A QUEEN !

Ok. Now the story of Adimai penn

A woman ( Pandari Bhai ) was married to one king (MGR1) but another king named Sengodan( Asokan ) likes her. After some years Sengodan on a hunting trial meets the woman who was now a Queen, he proposes but the Queen points out that she is a mother, but Sengodan tries to kill her son, the Queen uses an axe and cuts Sengodan's right leg. This brings dishonest to Sengodan's country men.

MGR on hearing goes to Sengodan's country and asks Justice. And Sengodan agrees for a duel. The fight takes place over the net below Javelins was placed; who ever falls on the Net will get pierced. The rule is if the Fighter loses his weapon or falls from the net it is considered as a defeat and that the ruler and the people of that Country will become slaves to whoever wins the duel.

As Sengodan has one leg, MGR binds his right leg and fights with him, the result MGR wins but Sengodan throws a Javelin and kills MGR. Sengodan orders his men to get hold of the Country and summon the Queen and her son. One of MGR's close aides escapes and reaches his country but he was able to save the queen but not the Prince, who was taken prisoner. All the girls in their country are made slaves and thus the title.

The Queen was in hiding and year’s rolls by. The close aide was captured and sentenced to prison where he meets the Prince (MGR) who was allowed to live in a 2 feet high cell, MGR was introduced as a Barbarian, he did not know how to talk, how to eat with his hands, and he did not know that he was a human being. The close aide was taken aback on seeing the condition of his Leader. Some how he and his Leader escape from the prison via a river. He manages to save his Leader and dies in his grand daughter’s hand getting promise from her that she has to teach everything to him and make him the Ruler again and abolish the slavery of their Country. The Grand daughter Jeeva, acted by Jayalalitha promises him and takes MGR to her hut. But the traveling made on the river makes him sick. So his hands and legs are tied, showing his beautiful physique. MGR behaves rudely but she calms herself and treats him good. She raises him against all odds. She teaches him to speak and write. Slowly he understands who he is. But still he was not able to walk like others, stands like a hunchback because he was grown up in 2 feet high cell. She also teaches him all kinds of martial arts.

As MGR character is a man who helps damsel in distress saves a girl from two warriors, and when he tries to help the girl who was binded between two heavy wooden plank and MGR while lifting the plank, his curved spine straightens he was able to stand like normal person. And now Jeeva tells MGR all about his tasks and shows his mother's hiding place. On seeing his mother’s condition MGR vows to his mother that he will release the slave girls and his Country from the clutches of Sengodan. MGR with the help of Jeeva and others attack small group of soldiers and show his mark to Sengodan. MGR and his followers strikes often and frees up the girls from slavery. On one such assault, he comes upon a Commander of neighbouring nation, who was also a relative of Sengodan, played by R.S.Manohar, he was astonished on seeing Jeeva because his Nation Ruler is also another Jayalalitha. He conspires to replace the real Queen with Jeeva and take over the country. This conspiracy leads to the separation of MGR and Jeeva from his followers. They are captured by the Commander claiming MGR as a spy and hides Jeeva in another place, keeping MGR and his friend in the trial.

The Queen presides over the trial as she is also the sister of Jeeva, MGR also believes that his sweet heart is the Queen and hates to look at her. MGR's hands were bounded and were pulled by strong men on both sides. MGR shows his physical strength and throws both men. The Queen was impressed and attracted to MGR and orders to release and appoints him as her special body guard.

The Commander hatches a plan to kill both the Queen and her body guard and ask her to come for a Party. But the poisoned drink was misplaced by one of MGR's close aides acted by Cho who pretends as a magician and practices Witch craft.

The Commander having only one card in his sleeve orders to arrest MGR and the Queen. He pleads with Jeeva to act as the Queen so she and her Leader can be freed and allowed to return to their country. She accepts and replaces the real Queen and the Queen was dressed in Jeeva's cloth and kept in captivity, later to be killed. The commander goes to the prison and tells his plan but MGR cleverly kills the commander and escapes with the Queen thinking that she is real Jeeva.

After a long journey MGR reaches his country, due to his long absence the Country has changed, their house gutted with fire and farms plundered, his own men were now against him. MGR tells the whole story and makes them to rejoin the army. The Queen now joins the Sengodan side and waits to take revenge.

Same time MGR mother was captured by Sengodans men and announces the news of going to kill her in public. MGR and his men secretly enter the palace and fights with Sengodan and MGR likes to pay a man back in his own coin kills him as Sengodan has done to his father, releases his mother, his lover from the Lion and his Kingdom from Sengodan.

The movie like any other MGR movie, ends on a positive note :D

Lets see the main characters from Adimai Penn :

Vengaiyan: MGR dons dual role as father and son, His hunchback character and barbaric activities like trying to drink the water like an animal from the bowl and doing the same with a cup, seeing his figure in the mirror and reacting and innocently asking why he is not kissed by Jeeva when she kisses and say good bye to all kids who come to learn are very well portrayed by him. The questions he ask about why he has to learn martial arts, the enemies, and how the enemies look like, and silly questions like how the fight will look like and so on that every child would ask.

And also how a Leader should behave in time of crisis and how to manage his men and his enemies are very beautifully narrated like many other MGR films. His love to his mother and the vow to regain his country in a clever way depicts his real character.

Sengodan: Played by Asokan … no he lived by the Character, as time is a good healer, his principles never changes in time. His disgust of not able to achieve his goals is depicted in every frame. His lion voice and modulated dialogues is another feather to his cap. His villainous laugh in the climax still echoes in my ears.

Jeeva/Queen:
JJ's one of the best portrayals of 2 different characters . Excellent differentiation between a poor peasant girl and Queen.

Her walk and look of a Queen is terrific. Also she is a good dancer, she might have exhausted after the dance sequence in the Desert. As per the story she is a teacher who teaches Martial arts to MGR (who is well known martial artist) the storyboard people questioned that the people will not digest that she is teaching MGR but MGR had confidence that his fans will not be embarrassed, after screening and huge success his idea proved right.

I think , this was the only movie that she had played 2 roles .

Costumes: The costumes of the film have two types one is rough looking and another Roman type. MGR cleverly used rough cloth to a peace loving people and delicate Roman style for Power hungry, depicting that nobility is not in the dress but in the heart.

Action: Or fights are all different kind as you expect in a MGR film the first fight scene on the nets and the last fighting scene with Lion is not pictured previously in any Tamil film. MGR as a Hunchback used wrestling techniques of gracious body movement and not using that much of fist for fighting. Swash buckling Prison fight with R.S.Manohar and his army is also worth mentioning.

Editing: As you know the film has 24 frames per second, and MGR used more 6 frame bits to Lion fights which boosts the thrill in the climax and shows MGR editing prowess. Thousand of footage used for the 10 minute Lion fight.

(The Lion named Raja was bred by him and after it died the body preserved and still kept in MGR Home for public view)

Camera: There is no ideal frame, the frame is always moving, zooming, panning and tilting, great camera work was again is in the Lion fight. Magnificent scenes include thousands of Camels marching in the desert and the song shot in Jaipur palace which I have mentioned in the previous blog are tip of an ice berg. The Cameraman V.Ramamurthy proved his mantle.

IF MGR HAD NOT ENTERED ACTIVE POLITICS, WE COULD HAVE WITNESSED MORE AND MORE SPLENDID / CLASSIC MOVIES FROM THIS VERSATILE GENIUS . [/tscii:2afb3bbc6a]

I particularly liked Asogan's performance in this movie. It is what I'd call, a perfect overacting. MANGGGAMMMAAAAAA!!!!!

Interesting trivia:
1. Was planned in '65, with Saroja Devi in it.
2. MGR/KVM Introduced JJ as a singer. Not a bad singer. Could have retired as an actress and become a singer, instead of....
3. This, I am not sure, but isn't the lion towards the climax his own pet?

I had the opportunity to see this in big screen and needless to say, the colour blew me away. MGR films are MEANT to be watched on big screen.

And here is the link ( youtube ) for the classic Adimai Penn :

http://techsatish-techsatish.blogspot.com/2006/12/adimai-penn-tamil-movie-download-links.html

Ensooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :D :D

The costumes all resemble greekish !!

During the song Thayilaamal Naanillai, MGR appears with red top and black bottom ( in a cut banian type dressing ) .
Midway, another MGR joins with an yellow colour outfit !

This movie is not short of titbits for sure  :D

For one song, MGR as usual approached TMS but TMS had to go on travel for an important engagement and hence requested Thalaivar to wait.
BUT THALAIVAR TOOK IT THE OTHER WAY AND SUMMONED ONE ASPIRING CANDIDATE WHO WAS SINGING SPORADICALLY UPTIL THEN.

YES IT WAS NONE OTHER THAN THE GREAT S.P.BALASUBRAMANIAN :D

It was a pleasant surprise when MGR summoned SPB for singing the evergreen AAYIRAM NILAVE VAA .

During the time of recording, SPB was down with fever but MGR still pursued with him and assured him that he only will sing the song.
SPB came back soon and complete the recording

What a super hit song , it turned out to be ultimately.

ITS ONE OF THE VERY BEST OF SPB

Full marks to the composer , the great K.V.Mahadevan who tuned hit songs like :

1. Thai illamal naan illai - TMS solo
2. Emaatradhey emaatradhey - TMS solo
3. Aayiram nilave vaa - SPB with P.Susheela

Soon MGR-TMS patched up and TMS continued to sing kolgai parappu songs for Makkal thilagam :D

[tscii:3d498969f3]We all know that Makkal Thilagam produced & directed 3 movies which were super hits also :

1. Nadodi Mannan - 1957
2. Adimai penn - 1969
3. Ulagam sutrum valiban - 1970-73 ( started in 70 but released in 73 )

Adimai penn was one movie which had a very interesting storyline .

Dear Nakeeran,

Thanks. Whenever it is possible, I will post here.

I saw your post in NT thread regarding MM being the 100 th movie. As Saradhaa had mentioned (I had also dwelt on the same topic in Part I), it was NT's 99th movie. Probably when you take a list, some films may not find place (especially films where the actor had a small/guest role) and therefore if you look chronologically, you will be confused. You would be wondering why I am mentioning it here. I am coming to that point.

Many times, I have noticed that the total no of movies acted by MGR is given as 136.(Even in this forum, it was recently mentioned in this thread also) But as for as I know, the list comes to only 134,
if you take Oli Vilakku as 100th movie.

According to my memory, the list is like this.

100. Oli Vilakku - Nov 1968

101. Kadhal Vaganam - Nov 1968

102. Adimai Penn - 01.05.1969

103. Nam Nadu - 07.11.1969

104. Mattukara Velan - 14.01.1970

105. En Annan - 21.05.1970

106. Thalaivan - 25.07.1970

107. Thedi Vandha Mappilai - 29.08.1970

108. Engal Thangam - 10. 10. 1970

109. Kumari Kottam - 26.01.1971

110. Rikshawkaran - 21.05.1971

111. Neerum Neruppum -18.10.1971

112. Oru Thai Makkal - 03.12.1971

113. Sange Muzhangu- 03.02.1972

114. Nalla Neram - 10.03.1972

115. Raman Thediya Seethai - 14.04.1972

116. Naan En Piranthen - 09.06.1972

117. Annamitta Kai - 15.09.1972

118. Idhya Veenai - 20.10.1972

119. Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban - 11.05.1973

120. Pattikattu Ponniah - 31.08.1973

121. Netru Indru Naalai - 12. 07.1974

122. Urimai Kural - 07.11.1974

123. Sirithu Vaazha Vendum - 30.11.1974

124. Ninaithathai Mudippavan - 09.05.1975

125. Naalai Namadhe - 04.07.1975

126. Idhyakani - 22.08.1975

127. Pallandu Vaazhga -31.10.1975

128. Neethikku Thalai Vanagu - 18.03.1976

129. Uzahaikkum Karangal - 23.05.1976

130. Oorukku Uzahaippavan - Nov 1976 (My feeling is 12th, not sure)

131. Navarathinam - 05.03.1977

132. Indru Pol Endrum Vaazhga - 05.05.1977

133. Meenava Nanban - 14.08.1977

134. Maduraiyai Meeta Sundarapandian - 14.01.11978

I am 200% sure this was the list after Oli Vilakku. So how it can be 136 ? The only possibility is some inconsequential films might have been added up.

I am sure, someone will have answers .

Regards

PS: In the same manner, in Vijaykant's list of films, it was mentioned Iravu Suriyan(where he did a guest role) was mentioned as 99th ahead of 100th film Captain Prabhakaran. but actually, Captain was released in April 1991 and Iravu Suriyan came out in July 1991.

Not convinced with the picturisation, Thalaivar insisted that the song be re-shot which inturn was obliged duly by the Director. Finally, the changed one was appreciated by everyone !

So, how it was done ??

Saroja Devi picks up some water to quench thirst & looks for MGR.
From nowhere he runs in very fast , climbs over the car & does a thalam on SD's head. Finally starts with Pesuadhu kiliyaa ?? :D

Thats thalaivar no ?

Ok. what about the song ? bangoos thunder and announce the arrival of Puratchi Nadigar MGR !

MGR :

Pesuvadhu kiliyaa , pennarasi moziyaa ?
Kovil konda silyaa ? Kothu malar kodiyaa ?

Saroja DEvi :

Paduvadhu kaviyaa illai paari vallal magana ? :D :D :D
Cheranukku uravaaa ( hinting that he is from kerala ) :D :D
senthamizin nilavaa ??

ENGA VEETTU PILLAI :

Playing 2 characters is always a big challenge to an artist. Not everyone succeeded in distinguishing the characters.

While the characters the actor portrays are typically brothers, we have had movies where one of them is good and the other is evil (Uthama Puthiran) and movies where both are similar and switch places. Enga Veettu Pillai, with MGR in a dual role, distinguishes between the characters by making one a coward and the other a brave man. It has fun by putting the brave man in the coward's place and making him teach a lesson to the people around him. It is an enjoyable entertainer and was one of MGR's biggest hits.

Ramu(MGR-1) is the cowardly one - the heir to all riches of Poonjolai jamin. He has been raised that way by his uncle Narendran(Nambiar). Ramu shivers at the very mention of his uncle's name and a whiplash is Narendran's favorite form of punishment. Narendran wants to get Ramu married to Leela(Saroja Devi) but she is turned off by his cowardice.

Ilango(MGR-2) is a jobless young man, prone to pick a fight and for this reason, the cause of trouble for his mother. Circumstances lead to Ramu and Ilango taking each others' place. Ilango teaches a lesson to Narendran while Ramu learns the ways of the world.

Nowadays, the theme of mixed identities invariably leads to comedies with the laughs being raised through the ways the look-alikes don't fit into their new environments. The 'fish out of water' scenario is the one most often used. But here the two MGRs fit into their new roles quite well. The fun is in the way the others around them react to the changes in them. Ilango taking the place of Ramu is easily the hands-down winner in this.

The first instance where MGR slaps Nambiar is memorable and exhilarating with the reactions of Nambiar and Thangavelu perfectly conveying their surprise. Ofcourse the Naan Aanaiyittaal... song sequence is the pinnacle with MGR giving Nambiar a taste of his own medicine.

Wonder what was running in his mind when MGR sang NAAN AANAYITAAL :D probably a premonition to what he intended to achieve later ?!

The position of Ramu(in Ilango's place) is only marginally interesting as the listless romance with Rathna is the only major thing happening. Thankfully, the actions of Ilango are concentrated upon as he is wooed by Saroja Devi and hated by Nambiar and co. The revelation of the switch is handled neatly and the emotions of the heroines are not carried on for too long. But the subsequent story that digs into the pasts of the two look-alikes is confusing and extends the movie unnecessarily

One interesting thing to see in older movies in how well they stand up when watched today. Though Enga Veettu Pillai is undeniably entertaining even today, there do exist a few instances which stand out awkwardly. Special effects which make the dual roles possible don't compare favorably even to the effects in Uthama Puthiran. The subservient role of women is quite obvious in the way Saroja Devi, who is introduced as a 'modern' woman, gleefully accepts the demand of a dowry. The lament of Pandaribai about wanting to die at Nambiar's feet after he has slapped her and walked out is quite irritating.

Ilango character is full of blood & aggression. So aggressive even while eating ! One can see this guy eating quite frequently & very fond of good food also !

The best scene probably is the super hit song NAAN AANAYITAAL ADHU NADANDHU VITAAL .

MSV-TK Ramamurthy combination had composed some beautiful songs :

1. Kangalum kaavadi chindadatum
Its the song after the title which also introduces the timid MGR Ramu , who is fond of dance , music .
I suspect a political agenda hidden deep into himself becaz there will be a close up shot on MGR when the words NADELLAM UNNAI KANDU PUGAZ PADATTUM :D

2. Kumari pennin ullathile kudiyiruka naan varavendum
Ilango and Saroja Devi sing . The song starts with a take actually being shot for a movie which is being watched by both ( the movie also shows Ilango being fond of acting & in pursuit of acting also )

This song was written by Valee . There is a story behind this song . Valee actually wrote thinking about his lover who latter became his wife also !

3. Naan maandhopill ninrirundhen
For MGR 1 and Ratna , after the cross over & a mild change in the behaviour traits. MGR learns the basics through that lady.
This song is a TMS special

4. Pen ponaal
Ilango and SD. Nothing great to write .. The song could have been avoided

5. Malarukku thendral pagayanaal
Beautiful song for SD and Ratna amidst the confusion / misunderstanding as both MGR characters get mixed up
I would say that its one of the best of P.Susheela-LR Iswari combination.

This Chanakya directed movie features : M.G.R. - 2 roles/Saroja Devi/Rathna/Nambiar/Nagesh/Thangavelu/ Ranga Rao / Pandari Bhai

Cost of living then :
 It will be quite fascinating & shocking to note that that the entire meal that MGR takes in the hotel costs only six Rupees is bound to make people who lived then sigh in nostalgia!

Nagesh was a permanent feature in movies released during those times and is at hand here too. His mispronounciation of words is quite funny at several places and leads to many quick laughs. But the extended sequences, like the one where Thangavelu discovers his romance with his daughter, are a lot less funnier.

MGR distinguishes well between the two roles though it is quite obvious he is more at ease as the brave Ilango. His strict adherence to his enduring 'good samaritan' image is obvious in the way he apologises before uttering a single lie to his mother and speaks out against dowry.

The great Nambiar plays his character as precise as ever .

It was MGR who used the cinema medium to the best advantage

A movie for the masses :D :D

The one scene that I always remember from EVP is not the Naan Anaiyittal sequence.

In fact, it's that simple scene of One MGR paying the idli bill for the other MGR. Somehow, that's what comes to my mind when EVP is mentioned.

I believe the producer of this film did a remake in Hindi, and later it became a Female version, which was remade back into Tamil with Vanee Sri (Yummy) in Vani Rani, which co-starred NT and Muthuraman. The storyline is very similar, but not as effective or as exciting as EVP. I bet after EVP, whips became a big craze and got sold out.

Groucho,
In bible ,it is mentioned Jesus used whips on merchants who misused the holy temple in Jerusalem (Probably this is the only once Jesus was so agressive) .He told "En thanthayin Alayaththai KaLvar kuhai aakki vitteergale "

Interestingly Jesus was mentioned in this song also.

[tscii:f94d7698e9]Anbe vaa is a nice entertainer from Puratchi Thalaivar . A movie sans fighting  :D

All songs are foot tappers . I was told that many went to MGR movies for the songs . True true.

Today's pick : Rajavin parvai

Well well well , there is no parallel to this song in tfm !

An Out of the world tune.

Amazing ludes

Richest in orchestration

Superb picturisation

A typical dream song of Puratchi Thalaivar . Both dressed in royal attire . And he was 45+ at that time . Amazingly young and smart looking.

Seem like he was impatient to ride on the chariot for the entire song. So, he moves to a beautiful garden & dance with Saroja Devi !

The uniqueness of MSV brand of orchestration is that the song effortlessly , seamlessly merges with the charanam and the drums give way to tabla when TMS sings Pavalan marandha padalin ondru … Pavayin vadivil parthadhum indru !

Just this song is enough to say that MSV is an incomparable genius .

What a start to this song ! An absolute western type compo in Indian style !

And those chorus guys take us to different world

If I forget to mention about TMS and PS , I will be a sinner . What a combination those days !! This man TMS seemed to have imagined himself like Shivaji and MGR .

I propose this song for a study material .

How easily TMS starts with a high pitch and finally gets into Pon malai mayakkam.

The song rhythm initially is that of a chariot riding tempo base. Gradually, it switches to normal mode .

Well. I am not an expert & cant describe my listening experience further.

This song separates MSV from other composers & this man is way ahead .

Listening to the song in stereo is awesome !

I would say, this song was a futuristic one in character.

We are really lucky .

I was searching for a Puratchi thalaivar movie with music by other composers & looooooo , I bumped into our mate TFM's posting in another thread :D

Maatukara velan was one movie wherein thalaivar does a doube action :

one that of a maatukaran ( obviously uneducated but good at heart )
the another, an advocate , city based .

The story is all about interchange of the characters and what fun that follows when the Cowman steps into the premises of the City guy's would be JJ :D

All scenes are real fun and a wholesum entertainer . The Cowman MGR gets nervous whenever any topic not related to him is touched but becomes extremely comfortable the moment anything is spoken about a cow or related aspect :D

So, you can see those funny scenes when he will take pains to explain to the prospective inlaws on how to extract milk & how to nurture the cow !

A day will come when the city based lawyer MGR steps into the would be JJ's house & as both characters meet eye to eye, the Lawyer guy asks the cowman about the whole background for which the cowman narrates the whole history through this song :

ORUPAKKAM PAAKURAA

Actually, JJ falls in love , the moment she sees the cowman not knowing about his original background.
So MGR will explain about JJ in a beautiful manner through this song by TMS and composed by K.V.Mahadevan
& penned by Valee

You will burst into laughter the moment you watch the song as the cowman will act like JJ which will be watched with all sincerety by the lawyer guy :D

Now, U may be asking a question , how come that cowman can try to marry another guy's woman  Dont worry, the lawyer gets another woman through Lakshmi :D and the score gets settled happily !

For that guy also , one teaser is there : PATTIKADA PATTANAMA, RENDUGETAAN LATCHANAMA . ( Very simple, Lakshmi mistakes the cowman to be her guy & plays fun for which the lawyer gives her right back :D )

KVM is a great composer who infact was senior to MSV & whats special in this song technically. Lets see the post of one hubber :

From: Shashi (@ eed01735.mayo.edu) on: Thu Jan 7 11:58:35 EST 1999

"Oru pakkam paarkira, Oru kanna saikira.." from Mattukara Velan. This is wonderful example of KVM's creativity. The whole melody is classically based yet has a folkish quality to it. TMS's voice with perfect articulation tries to bring but all the emotions well. Interludes not much to talk about; simple yet adequate and links the 2 stanza's perfectly.

Briefly, the pallavi is wonderfully conceived in Mohanam. The charanam opens with P,D2,N2 (like kamboji's uttarangam) and brings in that cinematic/light music touch by moving to N3 (almost like brindavana saranga). Quickly it moves back to Sankarabharanam's uttarangam and like bilahari comes back to Mohanam at the start of the Pallavi again. Just wonderful imagination by KVM!!

LINK TO THE SONG , COURTESY DHOSTH TFM LOVER :D :D

Watch this puratchi song from the super movie Deiva Thai wherein MGR plays the role of a police guy .

This great song appears when he is kept momentarily in jail but look at the cheer & style & the manner he delivers the song !

This song is a real beauty for 3 aspects :

a. Superb tune by MSV-TKR & orchestration especially the ludes of guitar
b. Wonderful lyrics
c. Nice picturisation

Andha moondrezuthil en moochirukkum
adhu mudindha pinnalum pechirukkum
ullam endroru oorirukkum
andha oorukkul enakoru per irukkum
KADAMAI ADHU KADAMAI :D

Padhavi varumbodhu panivum varavendum thunivum varavendum thoza

Anbe un annai, arrivey un thandhai
Ulage un kovil , onrey un devan !

The movie has some scintillating songs - Oru pennai parthu, vannakili sonna mozi etc

One of the best albums of MSV-TKR with Makkal Thilagam .

Watch this beautiful song fm KUDIYIRUNDHA KOVIL , a movie with many class songs by MSV sir.

The link is for the song UN VIZIYUM EN VAALUM SANDHITHAAL :D

This song appears when the villain MGR , just after coming back from a robbery task meets his girl friend Rajashree & here comes the song.

Enai vellum manam thullum inbathaal

Azaku chilayin uramai thalaivan naane enadhaaga :D

TMS , sings well exactly like Makkal thilagam and for Rajashree, LR Iswari sings in her own thullal style

MSV is the king of melody .

I would love to see thalaivar's movie purely for the songs songs songs

Quite interesting picturisation ! Both of them indulging in a comic sword fighting and also singing as well ! .

[tscii:abf2dd70f8]Sometime back we had covered the classy Nee ennenna sonaalum kavidhai .

Today’s song is actually the introduction song for MGR 1 and his pair is Rajashri.

With a big hat and cooling glasses, Thalaivar comes as a surprise to her & sings this super hit song by S.P.B.

I should rank this movie as one of the best of MSV-MGR albums featuring some superb numbers.

Look at the cheerful face of Makkal thilagam and his ever aggressive actions running around very fast ( who must have been 55 + then ).

Mellisai Mannar never disappoints .

It’s a beautiful tune coupled with some nice instrumental arrangement . The flute during the interlude takes you to a different world no !

Melliya poonkodi valaithu
Malar meniyai konjam anaithu
Idhazil thenai kudithu
Oru inba nadagam nadithu

Ellaigal illa ulagam
En idayamum adhu pol nilavum
PUDHUMAI ULAGAM MALARUM
NALLA POZUDHAI YARUKKUM PULARUM

Yaarum vaaza vazum katrum naanun ondru dhaane
Inba naalum indru thaane !!

We are all aware of the political current prevailed then when this movie was shot . MGR was suspended by DMK and floated his own party ADMK ( which subsequently became AIADMK ) . Amidst various tensions, this movie was picturised and carried lots of political message .

To deliver a killer punch, MGR used the song THAMBI, NAAN PADITHEN KANCHIYILE NETRU .

Vaazga Pon manachemmalin pugaz

During this song, thalaivar plays 3 instruments - Piano / violin / accordion !

the variety song - Pavalakodiyile muthukkal poothaal

all from this movie only !

THIRUNDHADHA ULLANGAL IRUNDHENNA LAABAM
VARUNDHADHA URUVANGAL PIRANDHENNA LABAM
IRUNDHALUM MARAINDHALUM PER SOLLA VENDUM
IVAR POLA YAR ENDRU OOR SOLLA VENDUM

The best film of MGR is "Ulagam Sutrum Valiban" lot of scenes deleted, nearly 40,000 feet and all are foreign locations. Any body know what that scenes will be.

And one song "Ulagam Sutrum Valibanodu" is not included. If you noticed the song "Lily Malarukku" of Murugan MGR with Manjula - merry go round in cup and saucer MGR lip movement did not match with the song and another song "Nilavu oru penagi" MGR lip movements but only the bgm goes on. Maybe due to the negative was opened and they have to reshoot in Sathya studio.

While looking for info on movie "Bommai" found this..

KJ Yesudas in a interview

How was your experience with M G Ramachandran when you sang for his film 'Urimai Kural'?

One day, our late chief minister M G Ramachandran called me over and asked me to sing the song 'Vizhiye Kadhai Ezhudhu'. I was elated and thrilled. My happiness doubled when the song became a hit.

MGR is a mahaan. I came to know about him at a later stage. He not only gave importance to music but more to the art itself. His character was such that he turned even his foes into friends.

For example, at a time when he had difference of opinion with Kannadasan politically, he was not satisfied with the lyrics for a particular song. Finally, he himself suggested that Kannadasan be called to write the lyrics. Others around him were hesitant but MGR was firm. He told them that Kannadasan had no equal and asked them to approach him for the lyrics. Kannadasan also obliged and the song was 'Odum Megangale' for the film 'Aayirathil Oruvan'. Enmity vanished... and art gained importance...

Thirumaran

one more info about Viziye kathai ezudhu.

Though the titles will show Valee as lyricist,
The song was written by Kannadasan under request by Sridhar. During this period MGR-Kannadasan were not in good terms .

MGR listening to the lyrics , INSTANTANEOUSLY ASKED SRIDHAR, IT MUST BE KANNADASAN ONLY ! Not Valee.
Sridhar was stunned & told MGR that he wanted Kannadasan to write a song but he feared MGR may delete that song.

MGR was magnanimous to add further to Sridhar to put Kannadasan's name in lyricist list but by that time, the editing was complete and hence the movie titles will show Valee only !

See how thalaivar can identify the source writer by listening to a song !

Such was his flair for lyrics and music . He had immense interest in such finer aspects of making a movie !

Makkal thilagam was an alround personality . He was not a mere cinema actor.

That young woman JJ loves the super hero MGR but he with all the modesty , diplomatically avoids this by singing a mind blowing number :

NADALUM VANNAMAYIL KAVITHIL NAAN THALAIVAN
NAATILULLA ADIMAIGALIL 1000THIL NAAN ORUVAN

MAALIGAYE AVAL VEEDU
MARAKILAYIL EN KOODU

IDHIL NAAN ANDHA MAAN .. NENJAI NADUVADHENGE KOORU ?? :D

PADHIYILE VEGU DHOORAM
PAYANAM POGINDRA NERAM
KADHALAI YAAR MANAM THEDUM !!

And JJ gorgeous !

And what an astounding music by MSV-TKR ! Amazing songs but unfortunately this was the last movie for them together.

My brother is a Sivaji fan and his friends(3 of them) are hradcore MGR fans. Before they become hardcore, they were drunkards, skipped schools, played football and cricket. They were never into studies. In two words, bad boys. Somehow they got attracted to MGR. Ever Since becoming MGR fans, they drew inspiration from MGR, listened to his thathuvams and became saints. They now live a peaceful live, making big money. My brother paththi sollanumaa? avar perusa onnum saathikkala. ippa kuuda paasa malar paarthittu iruppaar.

Being good actor, making class movies and all are of no worth. MGR was able to inspire people and drove them into thinking positively. ippo naalu pEr nalla irukiraangal.

You want more proof? Lot of my child hoold close people, MGR fans, still pull rickshaws. So, being a fan does not carry any meaning. Tell me which tilagam had more educated fans? A beautiful song for the week end !

MGR with Saroja Devi , a movie which thalaivar gives an emotional performance and one of the movies with a heavy melodrama .

Look at the way, the song is structured which makes us wonder whether it is a folk number or lite ?

Starts with guitar but moves to a different league totally with flute , tabla all joining and having a mayhem .

Sakkarakatti rasathi en manasa thottukko kapathi
santhana katti meniyile naan saanjikava sollu magarasi !

The flute is so so superb ! Not to miss the accordion .

And the evergreen pair TMS-PS ! TMS breaths like Makkal thilagam .

MSV seems to have kept the best of his reserves packed for MGR .

The movie also 3 more lovely songs :

1. Kannan pirandhan
2. Chellakiliye mella pesu
3. Nalla nalla pillaigalai nambi
