Guess what...finally i found a song where the guitar is being played by IR himself for sure...although not his own music.

The song is under the mango tree sung by usha uthup.

"Usha: I knew Dilip (Rahman) when he used to play the keyboard for Ilu. Such amazing talent. He is the sound of today, but Ilayaraja is the sound forever. A small man but what power. He starts writing music and the musicians standing behind him take them down. After that it is sheer magic. He just makes one movement with his hand and bang on, all the musicians are perfect. I can kill to get that experience."

If IR did guitar for Usha then she must be honored and luckiest.

Does anyone has the CD of this? Is there anyway we can buy the CD?

IR is well known for using Guitar .

Those who have learnt guitar will vouch for this.

Infact, IR learnt instrumentation from Mr. Dhanraj from Luz corner in Chennai and my brother was closely associated with Mr. Dhanraj.
Infact, IR used to say that Dhanraj is his Isai aasan.

Naanay naana

Ilayanilaa

To name a few are exclusive guitar oriented songs

Didn't IR win a gold medal from Trinity college for classical guitar?

some of his classical guitar arrangements are mind boggling!

I also heard that he played the guitar interludes in "Ilaiya nila" himself - but dunno if it is true.

I've not seen any MD pay as much attention as IR did for composing bass lines. His bass guitar lines are entire compositions by themselves, though they go unnoticed most of the time (unfortunately).

I also heard this anecdote that once IR was the chief guest for the annual culturals at IISc, Bangalore (maybe in the 80s ?), where accepting the crowd's demand, he played 'Ilaiya nila' on the guitar (!) and while playing he casually used the guitar switching hands!

Dear Ushajiii,

You are everywhere !!!. Great.

What about - Paadavaa un paadalai - Naan paadum paadal

ANother song with both Strings and Base guitar

Thanks for pointing out - Yen iniya pon nilaavay . Its my favourite song

Thavikuthu thayanguthu oru manadhu - From Nadiyai thedi vandha kadal - Another song with strings and base guitar

Probably you all should buy the book written by Madurai - Krishnan or Mani ( who worked with MSV for several years ) and who has indepth knowledge of Carnatic music and also western.

He has written a book on usage of Strings and rhythm and base guitar and 90 % of the songs he touched were all of IRs !!!
