Hey does anyone know the name of a russian movie where a father returns after so many years to his house and how the relationship with his 2 children(boys) after he returns is.It was a great movie and the camera work was brilliant.Forgot the name :(

kannannn
17th March 2006, 11:07 PM
Sanjinika, delighted to see a fellow hubber who likes russian movies. The movie is 'Vozvrazheniye' in russian or 'The Return' in english. Did you know that the movie was intended to be made as a pure thriller (remember the unidentified contents of the box?) but the director decided instead to turn it into a movie based on the relationship of the father and his sons, halfway into the movie (it is based on a russian novel, BTW).

ssanjinika
17th March 2006, 11:09 PM
The return is rite !!

Kannann have watched only this russian movie..pls let me know of anyother great russian movies.Loved this one. However it was intended,it turned out great in the end :)

Sanjinika, I am a fan of Tarkovsky's movies. But his movies tend to be long and most of the scenes wighout dialogues. I don't know if you like such movies. But I can give two classical Russian comedies which you will love.
'Brilliantovaya ruka' or 'Diamond hand' - the movie is about a case of mistaken identity and what happens when you are carrying smugglers' diamonds in the plaster of your fractured hand.
'Ivan vasileyvich menyayet professiyu' or 'Ivan vasileyvich changes profession' - About time travel and what happens when 'Ivan the Terrible' changes places with a scientist, whose experiment goes wrong.

Another movie I liked is 'Vor' or 'The Thief' - About a boy whose mother mistakenly falls in love with a thief.

SP, Bangalore is the best place in India to see world cinema. I recommend 'Collective Chaos' and 'Suchitra Film Society' that screen excellent movies from around the world. 'Collective Chaos' regularly screens movies at 'Center for Film and Drama' on Cunningham Road (the membership fees was 250 Rs for students, I don't know how much they charge now) and 'Suchitra Film Society' screens films at Banashankari. You can also get dvd's from Habitat on Church Street (I was told the rentals are high). Or you can buy them in National Market in Mejestic. I can give more info. if needed.

[tscii:41aaf5ae89]I saw all 5 Oscar nominated movies.....and this is what I think

1) Munich - best out of the 5....to me....i love movies like this.....and this was one of the best....... specially the Mozzart......

2) Crash - though I loved Munich, I think Crash deserved to win Best Movie..... it was one of a kind...the way they had shown the conflict in modern day life.....and the way the stories all connected was amazing...I loved the part where the kid saves her dad with the invisible cloke he gave her...... if u had seen the movie u know at am talking about.....

3) Good Night and Good Luck - WOW!!!! Beautiful movie.... would have loved it if I knew the history a little bit more...but that didn’t stop me form enjoying the movie..

4) Capote - it's a slow moving movie..... Nice story and very well narrated...... Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved the Best Actor award....what an amazing performance..... Truly a good movie...if u had seen him in Twister....u would have never tot he will win an Oscar for Best Actor..... but he did.....well done.....though I think it's a good movie.... I don’t think it deserves the top 5 spot......

5) Brokeback Mountain - not my cup of tea..... Yes, it deserves all the credit it got for such a controversial subject.... but I am thankful Crash won best movie instead of this.....

Well I would have loved it if Capote was replaced by Walk The Line or Cinderella Man...... 2 were good movies.....

hehe

The political thriller Syriana is pretty good. If you liked Fahrenheit 9/11, you would relish this. But I have to warn its a cocktail spoof of all conspiracy theories spun worldwide by the weak against the strong.

But the horror Final Destination 3 is awesome!

Ben Hur !

In 1959, won 11 out of 12 Academy awards n was the winner of highest number of awards before Titanic

The other movies which were nominated at that time for Best Motion Picture were

1)Anatomy of a Murder, Otto Preminger, producer (Columbia)
2)Ben-Hur, Sam Zimbalist, producer (MGM)
3)The Diary of Anne Frank, George Stevens, producer (Twentieth Century-Fox)
4)The Nun's Story, Henry Blanke, producer (Warner Bros.)
5)Room at the Top, John and James Woolf, producers (Continental)

It is the World's most honoured picture. When a Jewish prince is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend, he regains his freedom and comes back for revenge

Charles Heston is known for his other movies like Ten Commandments !

I LVOEDDDDDDD THAT MOVIE

Joe and SP, 'Gods Must be Crazy' is one of those movies that make you laugh irrespective of your age. I first watched it when I was a kid and again watched it last year. I thoroughly enjoyed the pure fun. Unlike most of the stuff churned out today, the movie was honest in its intentions. I haven't seen the second part of the movie. Can someone throw more light on it?

Why not ! GMBC II

Xixo (N!xau), that lovable bushman from The Gods Must Be Crazy, returns in this sequel, which is virtually guaranteed to please those that enjoyed the original. Like the first film, The Gods Must Be Crazy II features three separate plot strands that eventually come together as the movie draws to a close.

This time around, Xixo's adventure kicks off when his two children go missing after inadvertently hitching a ride with two evil ivory poachers. Meanwhile, a visiting New Yorker (Lena Farugia) finds herself stuck in the outback with a gruff local (Hans Strydom) who doesn't take kindly to dainty outsiders. Finally, in the wackiest subplot, two soldiers from opposing factions take turns holding each other hostage (there's only one gun, and neither can seem to hold onto it for very long).

Ive not seen first part.
I saw part 2, bushmen stuff. IT was HILARIOUS. Its about how they communicate, interpret or misinterpret and the bushman succeeds in driving them away.

Its all from a Coco-cola bottle. I saw it sometime around its releiase 1988 or so....... kinda forgot quite a lot.

I liked the doc's part.

Finally, in the wackiest subplot, two soldiers from opposing factions take turns holding each other hostage (there's only one gun, and neither can seem to hold onto it for very long).

The first part too has its share of military humor. Especially, two soldiers from the opposition camp, who start playing cards at every oppurtunity they get, however short-lived. In one such instance, they start playing cards when the rest of the gang is on a watch out after taking a few students and their teacher hostage, causing the leader of the gang to lose patience and shout: 'I am working with a bunch of amateurs..'

And I found this from the web when searching for its box-office performance:
"THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY is a South African movie that arrived in Europe with little fanfare in 1982, broke box-office records in Japan and South America and all over Europe, and even became a cult hit here in North America.."

Oceans 11 is a 2001 casino heist movie, one of the stylish and fast paced movies in the crime/adventure/thriller genre of movies. Highly recommended, if you like robbery movies for strategy and style. It was Oceans 12(remake of Oceans 11) that was a big time disappointment.
