I am starting solely on suyanalam. I am amazed at the ease with which
GR gives excellent classical songs in TF. Some I remember are

1. kuRangilirunthup piRanthavan manithan (beautiful shanmukapriya)
2. vasanthamullaip pOlE vanthu asainthu Adum peNpuRavE (chArukesi)
3. ninainthu ninainthu nenjam uruguthE (another excellent shanmukapriya)
Can you add to these list. I would like to stick to GR (he sounds a purist).

Is mullaimalar mElE moikkum vaNdu pOlE by GR?

aruLarasan:

Indeed "mullaimalar mElE.." is by GR. (I think its from Uththama puththiran)

There is a good song in "ponmudi" by GR. He himself has sung a song in that film. Any idea about that song?

"sindhanai sey manamE" is from Ambikaapathy. (I think
it is the first of those 100 songs A'pathy sings
before his death.)

Is "Sundari Soundhari Nirandhariyae" from Thookku Thookki by GR? Who are the singers?

Kanchana:

TMS + Leela + one other female singer (?)

AruLarasan:

We put up an article in PPP, taken from a book on K'dhasan
which said that the song, "kanavu kaNdEn naan kanavu kaNdEn"
(music MSV/TKR) was the first duet in "mugaari";
but, Rajaraman says GR was the first to compose
a duet in mugaari: "vaadaamalarE enadhanbE" in
A'pathy. I thought you would be interested in
this info. I don't know anything about raagaas,
but, that article said composing a duet in
mugaari is rare. The article is at:

As I mentioned before, Thookku Thookki's "Sundari Soundhari" is one of my favorites. P.Leela's voice (Thanks Sathiya Keerthi!) has a layam and izhaivu in this song that is mesmerizing.

MandhiriKumari's "Ulavum thenral kaatrinilae" was sung by K.R.Ramaswamy and Leela(?) As per my Mom's account, that is the scene where the husband is planning to push his wife into the river from the boat: the wife's words are innocent but the husband's words have an underlying meaning in this duet. KRR's voice, the flowing tune and the lyrics capture the essence of the scene very well. (I have never seen this movie which is an adaptation of the Perumkaappiam Gundalakaeshi.)

Also, KRR has a song "Ennai thaedaadhae enru solludhae, enna sonnaalum kann thaedudhae". Is that one of GR's creations?

I'm looking forward to Rajaraman's account in the pre-TKR/MSV thread.

Is "vElaikkaari" (CNA's sotry/dialogues) by GR?? There are good songs in that film too. I remember KRR's "innamum paaraa mugam Enammaa.."

Kanchana:

Two clarifications on MandhiriKumari:

1. The song you are referring to, in which the
villain invites his wife (Mandhiri Kumari) to
a cliff to push her down (but ultimately she pushes him
down), is "vaaraay nee vaaraay, pOgum idam vegu
dhooramillai, nee vaaraay" and not "ulavum thendral
kaatrinilE" (which is from the same movie).

2. I think the singer in both the songs is
Thiruchi Lokanathan.

Rajaraman

I was told by somebody that the last portion of the song 'maasilaa nilavE nam' (ambikaapathi) is based on mukaari. The piece goes like

vENugaanam thenralOdu sErntha pinnaalE

Why didn't anybody mention about 'manam kanintharuL vElmurugaa' from vee.paa.ka.bomman. It is another classical example of kurinji, following the lines of 'sundhari sowndhari'.

Both situations are true. In one movie
pushing from the cliff which keerthi is

pushing from the boat, but I not sure of the

Bhaskar:

Are you referring to the song from ThenNilavu, in
which Nambiar pushes his wife from a boat in
the middle of Kashmir lake? That song is:
oorengum thEdinEn oruvarai kaNdEn. It is a
nice song by Jikki; it starts slowly, but
builds up momentum and ends-up with a very
serious isai. The MD for that movie is AMRaja.

KappalOttiya Thamizhan is by GR. The tune for "kaatru veLiyidai kaNNammaa" is a lovely one.
I am sure it is based on some raaga.
Especially I like the part in which PBS sings

endhan vaayinilE amudhooruthE
KaNNammaa endra pEr sollum pOdhilE

and, when he repeats, the lines are interchanged.

Kanchana! Kanchana!

I saw Thook Thook last weekend in Raj TV.
Sivaji got pissed with his wife (Kolaiyum seivAL
pathini) and her sort-of-an-affair with somebody
and trying to attack her madly - she pulled some string and ULTAed the whole thing - Sivaji on
the run to some other country posing as a KIRUKAN.
He meets two sisters - Padmini & Ragini going
to the temple following them. He acts as a
Kirukan by repeating and doing whatever others are
saying/doing:
Yov YaaryA nee!
Yov YaayyA nee!

inga pArrA solratha thirumbi solrAn
inga pArrA solratha thirumbi solrAn

sariyana kirukan pOla
sariyana kirukan pOla

then in the temple, sisters start singing -
SivAji repeats the same lines - initially they
get irritated and later they start enjoying it and
appoint him as thooku thooki - one who caaries
stuff around when Ranis go places.

Then I switched the channels and started watching
NinaithAlE inikkum - BIG RAJINI FAN!!
BIG RAJINI FAN!!

Another GR song from SathAram is:

ninainthu ninainthu nenjam uruguthE

One more movie for which GR composed music:
Chakravathy ThirumagaL starring MGR, PS Veerappa, Anjali Devi, S.Varalakshmi et al. Not upto par versus Ambikapathy & Thookku Thooki. One of the funny songs is un athaanum naanthaanae sattai pothaanum naanthaanae, one other duet by Seerkazhi & Pleela was OK, another duet was a ragamalgai like Ambikapathy's maasilla nilavae but not as good. Is this too much info?

I saw "Theivathin theivam" last week, I had been
thinking (and also listed in PPP) all along that
MD was KVM...but to my surprise it was GR.

It had few good songs:
kannan mana nilail thangamE thangam - SJ
nee illAtha ulagathilE nimmathy illai - PS

For a chnage from his karnatic agramippu, GR has
given good mellisai in this movie.

The movie had its KSG touches. After seeing few
movies of KSG (saradha, kumudham, deivathin deivam,
kai kodutha theivam, karpagam) I have become a BIG
fan of KSG. His charactrization is GREAT, dialogues
and screenpaly are really good.
He has SUCH a positive attitude towards life which
reflects in his characters. Even villains in his
movies are very straightforward tell the hero that
they don't like him - also once-n-while he shows
the humane side of villains.

I want to write so much about his movies..but this
is NOT the place - will put them in PPP.

MANITHANEYA dir. KSG vAzga!

KSG faded away from Tamil filmdom after the arrival of Bharathiraja, Mahendran etc. During that overlapping period he still continued to make films with lengthy dialogues (vaLa vaLa vasangaL for the critics ) and even went on saying that his films didn't need to be in color and directed Adukkumalli (*ing Sujatha). Later he made a color film Neer nilam neruppu (Sujatha again). I think this was in 80/81 timeframe.

I agree that KSG did produce some rubbish; the
ultimate low was Kaaviyath Thalaivan
starring V'kanth and Bhanupriya (double role).
But, in his hey-days he produced master pieces
(some already mentioned). Since the digression
factor is heavy, I have put my remarks at

What does KSG want to convey in that movie? Why does he say that being innocent and simple will lead to an immature death?

SSR does not suspect his wife when the entire factory talks bad about her. He knows her only for sometime. But he suspects his sister whom he knows since birth. Is this not a character inconsistancy?

Ramki;

When I watch old Sivaji movies I try to have the mindset that over-acting was considered as acting at that time. But the problem is he hung on to that for a long time. I recently saw DhavaNik kanavugaL and sometimes it was irritably over-acting.
BTW I think Gemini's acting skills were unfairly downplayed by the media. I like Sumaithangi for his subdued acting and he pipped Sivaji (alaya maNi) for the best actor award in that year. Sorry for the digression.

You should hear G Ramanathan sing "Ejamaan petra selvame en chinna ejamaane". This song was tuned by KVM and sung by GR. It is laden with expression and shruthi purity and the diction is excellent. For the boost we give for cetain present day MDs who bray, GR has been to humble.

All GRs composition are par with Pure classical krithis and can be sung in a pure music forum in places like Music Academy! But unfortunately it has not happened.

Chakravarthi Thirumagal had great songs with GRs songs with a variety of songs sung by Sirkali and other singers.

Mukari a crying raga - was used in 'Ambigapathy' for a Romantic duet of Sivaji and Banumathy.
Today MDs make even happy ragas into sogams.
There is no replacement for GR.

The movie `MADHURAI VEERAN' has three songs with adopted tunes.
1.Eatchu pilaikum tholiley sarithana(TMS & Jikki) is same tune as Theena karuna karane by MKT Bagawathar
2.Avarkum enakun (Banumathy)is same as Unakkum Enakun(Jikki)in the film `Illara Jothi'.
3.Thaney Thannanna (cant remember the starting lines) by P.Leela & Jikki is a tune from Jikki's song `Earu poooti povaye anney chinnannaey' film Kalam Mari Pochu (Gemini Ganesh).
