Sivaji Ganesan ennum 'arputha kalaignanin' Sirappai indraya ilaingnargal purindhu kolla yaaravadhu mun vara vendum yes, some body will take neccy step that screening a spl show on sundays in some 'decent' theatres bcoz the real chances now is TV Channels and VCDs but because of the Ads we can't enjoy the movie with interest VCDs also not good print (even its from Original Copyright) So Some Theatre like satyam cinemas should be taken steps to Screen such a movies of old hits.

Here is some good news for all sivaji rasikarkal......His biography(auto) - enathu suyasarithai...which was released as a hard bound edition has now been "paperbacked"......copies I understand are available in Landmark and other leading book stores. in chennai...the hard cover edition is now totally out of stock...For those who haven't read it...it is a really interesting read.As regards out of chennai availability...sorry I have no news, will check from those concerned if there is some system by which they entertain postal orders....or maybe someone in chennai can help out sivaji piththargal from out of town.....sorry folks my erratic schedules preclude me from volunteering for this service.Maybe Landmark has a mail order service.....check out.

MohanRaman, Excellent stats, but I just have a doubt in one of the numbers .... I was watching an interview of Padmini sometime in the past ... There she mentioned she had the honor of acting with Sivaji in 53 movies as heroine, the highest for any actress that acted with him .... :? :? :?

There were two heroines in the film. Saroja devi and another (I am sure it is not Sharadha). Saroja devi - Chandrababu pair and Sivaji - the other heroine as second pair. If you want to know the story, please see the Ullaththai Alli Thaa movie. C.Sundar has nicely mixed the story of Sabash Meena with the scenes from Bale Pandiya.

It is not sharadha. I forgot her name. Sarojadevi as rightly said is chandrababu's pair.

Quite a rare and modern name the heroine had (esp for olden days)

Yesterday ,Vasantham Central(singapore) telecasted the song 'Sinthu nathiyin misai nilavinile' in a programme..I was mesmerized by the action by Nadigar thilagam ..when the song ends unconciously I uttered "hmm.eena nadigan?" ..coincidently my mother also uttered the same ..she was saying "He could have done the role in Bharathi movie..I can't imagine any better actor in bharathi role".

Agreed S.V.Subbaiah and Shayaji had done a great job as Bharathiyar..But still when I see Nadigar Thilagam's get up and action in this song alone ,I was very tempted to see full length bharathi character done by our Nadigar thilagam

Ultimate song from Paava mannipu

Song of the century from Paava Mannippu

TMS - oru chinna kathai.....In the film gouravam, the famous song "palooti valartha kili".....was first sung by MSV, as TMS WAS ABROAD ,as a track voice...which means like a dummy voice....The shooting was scheduled and TMS wasn't back...they heard MSV's rendition and pronounced it satisfactory and went ahead with the shooting, so at the time of shoot , nadigar thilagam moved his lips to suit MSV's singing....after shooting and when TMS had returned, MSV tried something....he played the edited song with sivaji acting and had TMS sing for it....one of history's lone case of "playback acting". Such was the poruththam between Nadigar thilagam and TMS.
I will try to contact MSV sir and get the GK venkatesh story verified....give me some time.

In Andhamaan kadhali, Mellisai Mannar composed 2 splendid songs through KJY

1. Ninaivaalay silai seidhu unakaaga vaithen
2. Andhamaanai paarungal azagu

but during this period IR was emerging as a strong force and this coincided with the end of the legendary MSV

Again in Imayam , there is a splendid song..

Gangai yamunai ingu dhaan sangamam ...from KJY and VJ

The last of the best songs in the late 70s which TMS sang for Nadigar thilagam should be :

1. Neramidhu neramidhu - Rishimoolam
2. Sindhu nadhikarai oram - Nalladhoru kudumbam
3. Nallavarkellam saatchigal rendu - Thyagam
4. Then malli poovay - Thyagam
5. Andhapurathil oru magarajan - Deepam

I think from Devanin kovililay yaavarum deepangalay, IR started using Malaysia Vasu and after that he continued for long....

SC Krishnan - poonai kannai moodi kondaal

[tscii:af1bcb675e]This is what Manisekaran has to say about TMS singing for Sivaji....

In 1954 through Maruthakasi’s recommendation TMS was taken to sing in Aruna Pictures Thooku Thookki. He was taken to the Film Center Studio for recording. Sivaji Ganesan who used to be given playback by CSJayaraman doubted the suitability of the voice of TMS. TMS was willing to sing three songs free. TMS and Sivaji Ganesan were introduced to each other. In the short conversation TMS studied the voice of Sivaji Ganesan. (Right from the beginning TMS was excellent at imitating the voices of most of the heroes he sang for.) And he did sing Sundari Soundari and Eratha Malaithaniley, imitating the voice of Sivaji Ganesan to the closest possible. When G Ramanaathan heard his voice and gave TMS the chance to sing all the songs for Sivaji Ganesan.

G.Ramanathan had already used TMS in Mandiri Kumari (Annamitta Veettile). That was how Sivaji got involved with TMS. All the songs were instant and great hits. The fame of TMS shot sky high overnight. There was already a talk that the voice of TMS suited Sivaji Ganesan very much.

While this development was going on, in the same 1954 TR Ramanna and TR Rajakumari started the RR films that produced some of the best movies in Tamil. As the film was under production stage, TMS was given a chance. TMS was invited to sing only chorus. But Tanjai Ramayah Dass was very impressed with the golden voice of TMS, and he requested the story and dialogue writer Vindhan (at that time known as Makkal Writer, and a close friend of Jayakanthan) to give TMS a chance to sing a full solo.

By this time Sivaji Ganesan had known TMS as they had worked together in Thookku Thooki songs. Koondukkili is the first film where TMS had sung under KVM’s composition, with the song Konjum Kiliyana Pennai. It was actually G. Ramanathan who built up TMS by that great movie.

That was the first song by TMS for Sivaji Ganesan. Just to mention that in films following Thookku Thookki, Sivaji Ganesan was not adamant about using TMS as playback singer, until the early 1960s when he started to insist on TMS singing for him. [/tscii:af1bcb675e]

2. Andhamaanai paarungal azagu

Again in Imayam , there is a splendid song..

1. Gangai yamunai ingu dhaan sangamam ...from KJY and VJ

The last of the best songs in the late 70s which TMS sang for Nadigar thilagam should be :

1. Neramidhu neramidhu - Rishimoolam
2. Sindhu nadhikarai oram - Nalladhoru kudumbam
3. Nallavarkellam saatchigal rendu - Thyagam
4. Then malli poovay - Thyagam
5. Andhapurathil oru magarajan - Deepam

I think from Devanin kovililay yaavarum deepangalay, IR started using Malaysia Vasu and after that he continued for long....

thx nov, madhu, nm and all.

thanks ESP BALAJI.

Cause I love the combination of

IR + SHIVAJI + KJY

KJY + IR creates majic in my heart

Actually "parasakthi's co -producer was AVM, the original producer was mr.P.A.Perumal of national pictures a strong periyar follower.he also produced Ratha kanneer. Nadigar thilakam(NT) and his family to this day visit the perumal household once a year pongal or april 14th and give some sarees etc to mrs.perumal.AVM were to fund the project and moved in assisting with studio/equipment/technicians etc.Ultimately they had to step in to finish the picture.....started shooting in the second half of 1950 and released for deepavali 1952.Imagine the mental agony of NT...waiting for his first picture.....in his biography he refers to the struggle. In private once told me.....dey...mohan....avm lla oru oru shooting floorikku naduvala maram ellam irrukumey parthirukaraya......athu ellam valarnthathu chettiar alunga oothina thaneerla illai....intha ganesan kaneerla...."AVM also produced his 125th film uyarntha manithan, yes antha naal produced by AVM and directed by VEENA virtuoso S.Balachandar.......a musician makes a songless film, inspired by the Kurosawa classic "Rashoman".

It is not that the trees were watered by AVM's gardners...they were watered by the tears of sivaji......during the making of parasakthi, he had to suffer number of taunts/insults/disappointments etc.In fact once when he was in a corner crying because someone was critical of him, it was mr. krishnan (of krishnan-panchu) who came and told him not to cry and that one day all 'these fellows" will line up in front of you for a callsheet....N T had tremendous regard for krishnan and called him "deivam" -page 89 of his autobiography. We know him as "simhakuralon" and during Parasakthi people in the sound engineering dept. said why is he neighing like a horse...Kutharai mathiri kanaikiraan......Ironical isn't it.As they felt he was thin they wanted to fatten him up and you can see him in parasakthi in various sizes and shapes......they shot 7000 feet and then scrapped the film.....then it was reshot later after a lot of discussion and debate on the 'hero"..the only portion in the film from the first lot was his searching the streets of madras....shot by the original cameraman and not maruthi rao who worked on the reshoot.People like perumal mudaliar, krishnan etc stood by him and when avm asked perumal to reconsider and whether they should use an established actor like K R Ramaswamy, it was vetoed by mudaliar who said that if he does the film it will be with ganesan....no wonder he called these people his 'deivams".

I got a VCD ,recording of the function 'ImayathiRku Inthiya Anjali' conducted by raj TV..In thae VCD there is a program by Y.G.mahendra ,he presented few famous nadigar thilagam scenes in a comical way followed by original scene ..In Kattabomman scene ,you are the one acted as kattabomman ,and you (kattabomman) talked like a hero of manirathnam movie (with single word reply)..That was holorious..I enjoyed a lot your performance .."kodukkamattan..pommu..kodukkamattan" ha ha ha..

I heard even AV Meyyappa chettiyar was not happy with ganesan as a hero of Parasakthi since he didn't want to take risk with a new face that too very slim ,with unusual dialogue modulation at that time .

But after few years the same AV Meyyapa chettiyar said that Sivaji ganesan is undoubtfully the world's best actor.

AVM chettiar was a gentleman and an honest one...during the 100th day function for Uyarntha manithan, in the presence of Anna, he acknowledged that he had doubts about NT and that how wrong he was...takes a great man to admit his error, publicly. Without the golden voice of TMS , I wonder whether the 2 giants Nadigar Thilagam and Makkal Thilagam would have reached this far ! I mean, still they would have achieved success but it was TMS who had been instrumental in giving maximum impact to their acting. Without songs, our tamil film industry ( why tamil, the entire Indian film industry ) cannot survive……as through songs only, powerful thoughts are being conveyed to the audience………… TMS LIVED AND BREATHED LIKE SHIVAJI AND MGR. Right from THOOKU THOOKI , the great singer had given precise voice modulation for both and I wish to pick some special ones which had deep impact on us :

1. SINDHANAI SEI MANAMAY :
From Ambigapathi …..Just observe the body language of Shivaji and the modulation when TMS moves from a normal level to high pitch. Terrific variation when he sings….Andhagan varumbodhu avaniyil yaar thunai …..
2. MULLAI MALAR MELAY :
Indeed another splendid song . A pure kaanada ragam based composition and TMS at his best , giving on dot impression as if Shivaji sang this song !
3. PONAAL POGATTUM PODAA :
A totally crestfallen Shivaji , having lost his dear wife , screaming uncontrollably and venting his frustration through power packed meaningful song realizing the harsh realities of life….
4. YAAR ANDHA NILAVU :
From the movie Shanti, altogether different song, a sort of western type and TMS once again comes up with his best for Shivaji. This was one song which TMS was reluctant initially as it had some western resemblance but came out outstandingly well ultimately.
5. PONNAI VIRUMBUM BOOMIYILAY :
TMS echoes the love and bondage between loving life partners. You can clearly hear the fondness of Shivaji over Sarojadevi as she acts a care taker of a handicapped husband with all the care and devotion
6. ANDHA NAAL NYABAGAM NENJILAY VANDHADHEY :
From Uyarndha manidhan, TMS ran full length and breadth of the recording studio to give the impact of Shivaji singing the song after a brief jogging ! Such was his commitment to the success of the song and no wonder it was a super hit and even now , its being seen and listened to with awe !!
TMS laughs , cries, sheds tears, talks like Shivaji !! great presentation.
7. PALOOTI VALARTHA KILI :
A unique song which TMS sang on watching the previous recording which was sung by MSV ! You can hear the stress that TMS gives to each every word and breathes fire all through the song…venting the frustration of a Father who feels let down by his son ….
8. AMMAMAA THAMBI ENDRU NAMBI :
From Rajapart rangadurai, TMS echoes the emotions of a poor stage play artist who longs for love and affection out of his family members
9. POOMAALAYIL OR MALLIGAI :
An evergreen duet song for dedicated Shivaji fans ! ask any Shivaji fan and this song will come under top 10 on romantic moods of Nadigar thilagam
10. PAATUM NAANAY BHAVAMUM NAANAY :
Splendid rendition, TMS breathed like Shivaji in this song ! Naan asaindhaal asaiyum agilam ellamay….arivai manidhaa un aanvam peridhaa ! vow …unforgettable lyrics….
11. AAHAA MELLA NADA MELLA NADA :
This is another song reserved for hardcore Shivaji fans as he will be at his romantic best with Sarojadevi
12. ENGAY NIMMADHI :
You will not get a better song than this when it comes out echoing your frustration when the whole world goes against you and you have little hopes of survival …what a terrific song by TMS !! only TMS can give such an impact
13. ISAI KETTAAL PUVI ASAINDHAADUM :
From the movie Thavapudhalvan, a reminiscent of the great Tanzen, a lovely song through which TMS makes the candles lit and its another Nadigar thilagam special for you !
14. VANDHA NAAL MUDHAL :
A very meaningful song, Shivaji sings while riding on a bicycle….being heard extensively even today.
15. ENNAI YAAR ENDRU ENNI ENNI NEE PAARKIRAI
From the one and only Paalum pazamum, TMS expresses the feelings of a husband dearly missing his old life partner
16. PAAR MAGALAY PAAR :
The song is so striking ….. echoes the heartburn emotions of a Father who is crestfallen for having lost his dear dear daughter ……
17. AVAL PARANDHU PONAALAY :
Once again, its paar magalay paar only, this time, more striking ……Just listen when TMS takes over from PBS with the words….aval enakkaa magal anaal …..naan avalukku magan aanen ….splendid rendition….
18. KANN EDHIRAY THONDRINAAL
From Iruvar ullam, Nadigar thilagam exchanges thoughts on the most ideal woman that he came across in his life
19. CHELLA KILIGALAAM PALLIYILAY :
Along with a fleet of children , Nadigar thilagam acts as a care taker and dear uncle , making them sleep …..another gem of a song from TMS
20. YAARADEE NEE MOHINI :
A suave Parthiban character , an interesting Villain portrayed by Nadigar thilagam in Uthama puthiran and TMS is on dot here…..the voice will be filled be youth …youth …youth….
21. DEVANAY ENNAI PAARUNGAL :
Every Christmas / Good Friday, this song appears by default ! actually , TMS was not called for …for the English phrases that appear in between …after experimenting with various singers from his group, Mellisai Mannar came back to TMS himself and he completed with aplomb….
22. MUTHUKALO KANGAL :
From Nenjirukkum varai, another song known for lyrics and splendid rendition …..Sandhitha velayil sindhikka veyillai …thandhu vitten yennai…. an evergreen melody
23. MALARNDHU MALARAADHA PAADHI MALAR POLA
You need any other song to convey fondness between two blood relations…a brother and a sister…….just listen to the lyrics…kannin mani pola…maniyin nizal pola…kalandhu pirandhomadaa….indha mannum kadal vaanum maraindhu mudindhaalum marakka mudiyaadha daa…..uravai pirikka mudiyaadhadaa……
TMS goes into a very base level to sing this part....

24. MAGAARAJAN ULAGAI AALUVAAN
From Karnan, its another beauty for Shivaji…… indha karnanukku mattum enna idhayam illayaa ?? TMS poses questions….
25. AGARA MUDHALA EZUTHELLAM ARIYA VAITHAI DEVI
From Mahakavi kalidas, this movie is another landmark for Nadigar thilagam....... a dumb Kalidas suddenly opening out with flurry of words and look at the dedicated effort by TMS in this song !

Music directors, from time to time, experimented with other great singers like KJY, SPB, AMR but none could match with the vocals of Nadigar thilagam precisely like that of TMS’s

For Shivaji, TMS was like unsaid rule for loooooong…. As age caught up with Shivaji, so also for TMS….. IR had to resort to Malaysia Vasudevan who tried his best to match in the 80s…..

TMS’S VOICE WAS LIKE AN OXYGEN TO A NADIGAR THILAGAM SONGS

A great list of songs from Sivaji and TMS Combination. I love all these songs. Superb posts balaji....keep this thread alive....let the flow continue.
the song also has each line starting with a, aa,e,ee, u, uu etc. Imagine the greatness of the poet.APN would have taken just 4 or 5 angles with NT sitting down and the full song gets over....no gimmicks...just plain good lyrics, plain good music, plain good singing and plain good acting.
Another song from a mythological "thiruvilayadal"........"paartha pasumaram, padithuvitta...." the philosophy of life in such simple words...no "nokias" and "strawberrys" and singers singing in totally bad tamil. For people who love NT, the tolerance level goes down when we hear tamil being murdered.TMS was not a tamilian, by birth he was a Saurashtrian...he mastered the accent....why can't there be proper training in pronounciation.Sorry for digressing......."eesan potta kanakku maravillai, poi vizhuntharu"...

Hi all,
This is my first post in this thread though I have posted a few in other threads. I felt very sad that I missed this till now.To make up,
I had been reading this thread in one go and I felt rejunevated.Great inputs from everybody.Being an avid NT fan I wish to contribute(!) something to this thread. Let me start with some trivia and that too some answers for some questions asked in this forum.

Regarding Sivaji-Lakshmi combo, people missed one movie
Unakkaka Naan- 1976 release produced by Balajee.

Somebody had quoted that in 1970, E.Vandhal & Sorgam got released on the same day and both ran for 100 days and had asked whether any other actor had done this?
Buddies, no actor in Tamil cinema had done this and our NT had done this not once but many times.

1.1967- Deepavali- O.V.Oravu & Iru Malargal - both 100 days.

2.1970- Deepavali- E.Vandhal & Sorgam- both 100 days.

Other occasions when two films were released and one among them became a hit was

1.1959- Deepavali - Bhaga Pirivinai- 216 days
Aval Yaar -Not successful

2. 1971- Ap 14th- S.En Sundari- 100 days
Praptham- 50 days.

The only time NT was not sucessful was
1982-Deepavali- Parichaiku Neramatchu & Oorum Uravum.

But the best part was even when he was in the evening of his carreer, he was not afraid to release his 2 films on the same day.The occasion I am referring to is

1987-Aug 27- Jallikatttu- 100 days
Krishnan Vandhan- 50 days.
See it was not a festival day like Deepavali or Pongal. The Tamil cinema had at that time firmly established RK & KH and VK,SR,Prabu and Karthick. But still NT had no hesitation. When the so called BO kings released movies pnce in 6 months or 1 yr, NT was totally different. He proved quality and quantity can co-exist.

Another proof for the above trait was

1959- 2 films-VBKBomman & B.Pirivinai -both 200 days

1961- 3 films- Paava Mannipu,Paasa Malar & Paalum Pazhamum- all silver jubliees(ie)175 Days+. Remember this films ran in all major centres and not as noon show in 250 seater theatre in Chennai.

Unlike present day heroes who are in good in acting but fail in BO, NT was good in both. There is still a lot that can be said on this.

Regards

PS: While talking about Jallikattu, one interesting info is that was the first and last movie of Sivaji which had MGR as the chief guest for the 100th Day celebration. [Dec 5th- 100th day celebration and Dec 24th- MGR passed away]

great

There was a sentence in this thread which said Manian(IP) could not believe that Sivaji, the single person is playing all the roles. I too have felt not once or twice but 100 times when I see Deiva Magan, especially the scene when all the three come in the same scene.( I avoided the word meet because the third Sivaji doesn't know about his elder brother and his presence in that room.I think Saradhaa started that famous dialogue but stopped.

The prelude to this scene is appa Sivaji sensing that his elder son is alive goes to meet Major and hands him a blank cheque for his son. initially Major refuses, but Sivaji says that only his son has got the right to reject it.

The next scene Appa Sivaji is sitting in his room. The son comes in.On seeing him Appa gets up slowely. He is seeing the son for the first time.See the father's face, Thigaippu, Santhosam, kutra unarvu all just flash thro' his face.
Then the son asks" Ennai theriyutha? Kannan.Neenga koopidu naan theringikka vendiya perai, naan solli neenga puringikka vendiya nilamai".
Father in an emotion choked voice says "Kanna"
Son " Ethukka intha cheque-i koduthinga"
Father " ellam un ethirkalathirkathan"
Son" Ethir kalam? appa naan ungalai onnu ketkalama?
Father again emotinally " Keluppa"
Son in a pleading voice asks " Oru kudumbathilae Ambilai Pillai Poranthaa athuvum Thalachan Pillaiya Porantha romba Santhosa paduvangalame, Unmaiya"

Father " Amam, Unmaithanppa".
Son's face will immediately turn hard and he will raise his voice" Illa,Poi." Father will have a startled look in his face.
Son's voice now will have anger and sadness " Neengalum ennai mathiri thane porantheenga. Neenga azakai illai inu ungappa ungalai thookiya pottar? Illayae, ennna ungappa oru ezhai, avarukku idhyam irundathu ana engappa periyaa panakkarar avarukku idayam irukka vendiya idathilae irumbu petti than irundathu. Evvaluvu avamanam(sobs) evvalu peru ennai kanda udanae nayyai thruatharthupole ennai adichu viratinangaa. Ithukku padilae ennai neenga konnirukalame"
Unable to bear any more, the father bursts out " athaidhanda naan cheyya sonnen ana andha muttal Raju(Major) athai cheyyama vittutan." Having said that he realises his mistake and says "Kanna intha ulagathilae naan patta kashtam nee padakoodathuinu than ithai ellam chenjan"

At this time the door opens and the elder son goes and stands behind an almirah. The Father regains his composure and sits in his chair. The younger lovely looking second son (NT,41 at that time will look like a 30 year old in this role) will do a cat walk like nadai and start " Daddy"

Father gouravathodu " mmm--"
Vijay(Younger Sivaji's name) in a hushy tone " Panam Venum"
Father loudly " Enna"
Son will have a shirk and the voice will still go down " Koncham Panam venum".
At this moment father will burst out " Panam! Panam! nee ennai pakka varathe panathukkathana"Here Sivaji will convey the agony of a father who expects love from his son but which is not forthcoming
Vijay " No dad, en hotel-ilae"
Father will not allow him to complete and shout " Hotel!Hotel!Damn your hotel. Ellathaiyum izuthu moodu"

Vijay character in an apologetic tone " yes, yes.ellathaiyum close panna than --" he will stop mid sentence as his eyes will focus on the blank cheque lying on the table. His face will turn happy and
" Naan varuvenenu cheque ready-ya vachiruntheegala daddy " and will take the cheque. Father avan eduthira poranae endra bayathil "yei athai edukathae" endru soluvar. Athey samayam avar thirumbi kannan -ai parpaar. Kannnan Sivaji thalaiyai mattum atti eduthu kollatum enbathu pola seyvar. Ithai ondrum gavanikkatha vijay Sivaji avar kariyathilayae kannaga cheque-i ethukondu "thanks dad" endru solli vittu oru flying kiss koduppar.
Appa Sivajiyo oru dharma ankadamana muga bavathudan iruppar
Kannan Sivaji santhosathil almirah-vai kuthuvar.Moondru perumae ore framil ithai seivargal.

Intha scene, they would have taken as a mask shot. Athavathu the film would be divided into 3 parts, they would have picturised Vijay Sivaji blowing a FK(at that time the other 2 portions would have been covered with the black pad), then Kannan Sivaji reacting with the kuthu (now the 1st and 3rd portion would be covered) and then the appa Sivaji's reaction would have been picturised
See our NT had to perform all the three times showing 3 different emotions and at three different times. Not only acting talent but you require a clear idea about the camera work and speed and more than that timing. It has to synchronise. If kannan character does his part earlier than Vijay character, the scene is gone. See how exceptionally well he has done that. Now coming back to the scene ,Kannan will come out and say in all happiness" Paarthingala Appa yaarukku poyi cheranamo, avanukku cherthirichu. Enppa unga asthikkum asaikkum irukkarae ore magan thambi, avanai enppa satham podareenga" Udanae Appa Sivaji oru athangathoda
" ore payyan, ore payyan inu romba chellam koduthu valathithuta avangamma" stopping suddenly realising his mistake solvar" ungamma. Avan cherkai sariillainu kelvipattan
Serakoodathavangalodu sernthu avan pathai maari poyiduvanonu bayama irrukku " Immediately Kannan Sivaji will say " Thambikku entha abathum varamae naan pathukiran.en uyire koduthavathu thambiyai kappathuven"

After assuring his father Kannan Sivaji thanake urithanae style-il idathu kalai lesaga valaithu idathu kaiyai mattum uyarthi " varen" endru sollivittu povar.

God.I have seen this film 10 times in theatre, 100 times this scene in TV,but while watching all those times I have always felt that all the three are different persons.Appa mela kopam and sankatam varum.Kannan mel parivu and anbu,Vijayay romba rasithu santhosam thonum.

What an acting! To borrow the great poet's words,
Here was an actor ! When comes another?

Excellent recap of Deiva magan... everyone had their own favourite NT in this movie !

You know, even the director ACT felt somewhat different ( he explained / exclaimed once )

ACT says .....

When NT is about the play this terrific scene which you explained.... as NT has to take up character by character, ACT felt as if the character himself is walking right in front of him !

When ACT saw Shivaji, one shot he could realise that he is going to play the role of that Father ...followed by the first son and finally the second son....

The body language of NT was changing at rapid pace inbetween shots....and it was astounding sight for ACT .....

Indeed its one of the best scenes played by NT

My favourite in this scene was the Father character as he will be fretting and fuming and feel humbled in front of his first son......unable to control his anger / emotions....

great to see your extensive posting...keep it up friend

As a hardcore NT fan, pls share with us on those songs of TMS - NT combination you love hearing

I know, the first one will be SINDHU NADHIYIN MISAI NILAVINILAY !!

Yesterday I watched the movie 'Avan Thaan manithan'

There are wonderful songs in this movie

1.Manithan Ninaippathundu Vaazhvu nilaikkum enTru
2.Aatuviththal yaaraoruvar aadathare kanna
3.Engiruntho oru kual vanthathu

As usual Nadigar Thilagam Amazed me with his one second mannerism in many times...Jayalalitha was working at sivaji's house ..Sivaji liked Jaya and wrote a letter to her and ask Major sunderrajan (his servant) to pass it to Jaya ..Later sivaji got a letter from jaya saying she decided her life and will convey him in person ..Jaya came to sivaji and said she took a decision and decided to get married..while sivaji thought It is him ,she is planing to marry ,finally realised it is muththuraman who is his close friend ..siavji hide his disappointment and bless jaya ..This time major came and try to give the letter to Jaya..Sivaji took the letter and said "Ithu oru kaalavathiyana kaditham"..then jaya leave..major asked "Enna ejaman..neengale neradiya pesi mudichiteengala?" ..Sivaji just says "Aha" with his immitable style...can feel that mannerism only if you watch it..

Somebody in this thread wanted the dialogue of a scene in Thangapathakkam. Let me recollect.

The scene that was referred to is the first scene after the interval.
Before that Sivaji's wedding anniversary is celebrated with Nallathoru Kudumbam song. Srikanth is arrested and the interval card arrives with the challenge of Srikanth and Sivaji's reply.

In the quoted scene, S.P.Chowdry walks in to the dining room. KRV & Pramila are seen sitting around the dining table. Seeing all the food left untouched,

SPChoudry " Lakshmi, Sappidalae?"

KRV " Oru naal sappidalaena uyira poidum?''

SPC turning to Pramila " Vimala, Sappidalae?"

Pramila " Oru naal sappidalanae uyira poidum?''

SPC with a shrug turns to KRV " Kutravali unagu magan, avalukku kanavan. Ana oru vishyathai rendu perum maranthuteenga. Avan enakkum Makanthan. Yaar thappu chenjalum avangalai arrest panna vendiyathu oru policekaranaduiya kadamai. Naalaikku naane thappu panninalum SP-ingarathukka ennai vidava poranga? Never! Never!"

Saying this he turns his face away from them " Neenga pombalainga. Kaanner vitu Azuthuteenga, ana naan ---" he stops and you can see the moisture in his eyes and feel the kamaral in his voice, he then hits his chest with his closed fist.

With this he will start to leave the room and KRV from behind will call " Ennanga, sappidalaya?"

Without looking SPC " Oru naal sappidalanae uyira poidum" endru sollivittu nadanthu selluvar, theatril kaithaattal kathai kizhikkum (Read my kaithattal was also there)

The scene you mentioned from Avanthan Manithan was a superb one, unforgettable. Sivaji a widower will love JJ and JJ though having high regard for NT will neverthless be drawn towards muthuraman via his daughter (Muthuraman also a widower). Just as you said NT will write a letter to JJ and give it to Major. While major goes in search of JJ, she will come to Sivaji's house.

On seeing her NT " Lalitha, vaa'' endru sollivittu kalyanathai patri pesa arambipar. In the course of the conversation NT will ask " manaviyai izathanvanga marumanam pannuvathu thappilai-ingriya"
JJ will reply that she is ready ti marry a widower.

NT with so much happinees on his face will ask " Lalitha ,nee padichava, panbu niranjava, unnai manaiviyaga adayara alavukku--"
Cutting him short JJ will ask " Chandru(MR's character) thakuthi illathavarinu ninaikreengala "

Struck by the words NT-in mugathai parka vendumae, athirchi, ematram, thigaippu ellam minni maraiyum.

He will control himself and bless her. At that time Major enters and on seeing JJ " inga irukeengala ? ungalai engayalaum thedarthu? " he will try to give the letter, when NT interferes and gets the letter and tores it. JJ leaves and as you mentioned Major will ask " Ellam pesi mudichuteengala ejaman?''

At that moment NT standing on the staircase facing camera will turn and say "Aha" a gesture which is only to be seen and enjoyed. Major, thinking that NT & JJ are going to get married will speak out with enthu. Cutting him short NT will say " Kalyanam Chandrukkum Lalithavirkkum ".

Major in an emotional tone " Naan muttal, ejaman, muttal"

NT will immediately reply " Nee muttal illadae, un pechai kettu konjam avasarapatten paaru, naanthan muttal" and will start climbing the staircase.

An unforgettable scene, unforgettable dialogue and an unforgettable gesture oozing with style.

Thanks for Joe for making me remember the scene

This song I think from BALAE PAANDIYAA is one of my fav songs ... Actually my Mom's fav song ... She used to keep listening to and singin this song all the time .. When I saw this song recently, I was really impressed with the picturisation ... So Sivaji is trying to commit suicide, and he jumps into a pond of water ... And unfortunately for him, there is not much water in that pond, and he doesnt die ... He's sooo frustrated with himself ... And there comes Devika singing this song for him to ENCOURAGE him ... Aah, when I get bad grades, I listen to this song, and sure it cheers me up !!! :P

welcome murali, lakshmi, anything to do with NT, I will be ready willing and able....I recall the "thangapathakkam" drama and boy what a performance.this drama was inaugurated in mumbai and NT had no time for rehearsals so he had his troupe do the rehearsal and got them all to travel by train. He was booked in first class, but got in with the rest of the troupe and had mahendran(the writer-later director) read the play - his part, while the others played their parts.one reading was over, they broke for lunch and siesta, that evening again NT came from his compartment, got mahendran to read the play again...broke for dinner..slept.Next day when he entered mahendran took out the script to read when he said .."vendam,rehearsal pakkalam" and proceeded to say all his lines....without any error.they reached mumbai, went to shanmukhananda hall had one full rehearsal and launched the play.......avanthayya nadigan...nangellam verumna makeuppa poosikittu camera munnaley nikkarom. (orumayil avarai urimayil azhaiththaen)

Thanks Mohanram Sir & Thanks Balaji.

Before doing serious discussion again on NT, let me add what I left out in my first post. While discussing about NT's 2 movies release on the same day and it's success, I forgot to add one more instance. That was in 1975, when both Dr.Siva & Vaira Nenjam got released on the Deepavali day, but they didn't do well. Though the two films ( out of which Vaira Nenjam started in 1973 as Hero-72 and later had a change of name) were not that good, I still feel the political uncertaintity that surrounded NT and his fans in the wake of Kamaraj's death was the main reason for the films' poor show. Another film in that period (1975 dec) which suffered because of the above problem was Pattum Bharathum

While talking on the same subject, I had said no other actor had achieved what NT did. But one actor had 100 days run of 2 movies released on the same day.He is none other than Ilaiya Thilakam Prabu. His success was like this

1986- Deepavali - Aruvadai Naal & Palaivana Roajakkal - both 100

1988-Deepavali- Poovizhi Raja & Kaliyugam -both 100 days

You talked about the style and mannerisms of NT in Avanthan Manithan. Andha padam muzukka stylethan. Antha padathil rasikarkallukku mika pidithamana style enna theriyuma?

Mohanram sir was telling about Thangapathakkam and it's stage arangetram. While the play was filmed, slight changes were made in the screenplay like introducing the second Cho (Vyapuri alias Vaigai Valavan) and bringing in the portions of SP Choudry's younger days. The song "Thathi sellum muthu kannan sirippu" a VJ-Saibaba beauty were all blended nicely. Mahendran had penned some sharp but superb dialogues in that movie. A dialogue which i like in the earlier scenes was when NT comes home late,he wil find his son asleep. He will ask KRV " Lakshmi, Jegan thoongitana"
KRV will reply" Ithanai neram appa enga, appa engainu kettutitu ippothan thoonginan" NT will lift his son and put him on his shoulders and start "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star--" On seeing this KRV will say " Neengalae office-ilirunthu tired-a vanthreekinga, en kastapadareenga?'' NT will say "Nee pathu masam sumanthirikeyae, naan 10 secondavathu sumakaranae" enbar.Appothu avar mukathil theriyum antha paasam, etthanai thadavai paarthalum salikkathu.
Intha postil naan solla vanthathu, KRV death scene. They would have done it differently in the Drama. Mahendran wanted to cut short on the dialogue front and whatever little is written should be effective.Bur director P.Madhavan had his doubts and he was more doubtful whether NT will accept the change. But Mahebdran wanted to try. Everyday when the shooting gets over,NT will call Madhavan & Mahendran and discuss about the next day's scenes. He was particular about this scene and asked Mahi whether he is ready with the dialogue. Mahi said that it will be ready by the morning. The next morning NT came and and his eyes searched for Mahi, but he was not to be seen.He went in,put on his makeup and waited. Now somebody needed to tell NT that Mahi had attempted something diferent and there were no volunteers.Atlast one person mustered courage(I don't remember his name) and told NT that the dialogue is like this. NT just heard what was said and went to the floor. The camera started rolling.

NT will walk in with his full uniform and while climbing the staircase, will remove his shirt, will walk into the room where the body will be lying. On seeing him,Pramila will get up and say Mama and start crying. NT will silently stand near the body for some time
Then in a soft tone will start
" Laksmi, naan daily late-a varuven.Nee enakkaga thoongama muzhichitu irrupae.Innikku naan seekiramae vanduten ana nee thoongi poyitayae, ezunthiruma, ennai paaruma "
Suddenly breaking down he will raise his voice " Ennalae thanga mudiyalayae Lakshmi, ennalae thanga mudiyalayae" and will fall on her body weeping. Madhavan,Mahendran and all others in the set were so much engrossed with his acting, director failed to say cut and tears were roling down their cheeks.
Avargalukku mattumthana, antha scenai theatril paartha ellorum appadithan feel panninarkal.

Balaji,
As you had said, I always watched NT's movies very keenly and will always look for nuances. While arguing with people who will question about the greatnees of NT( Nowadays I do it more with the younger generation) I used to describe scenes like I have done in my post. There have been quite a no of people who had asked me "Ivvalavu deep-a,unnippava padam parpeenga?"

I will tell them that cinema is not just for viewing. You should get into it and observe. I also used to tell them " 2000-2006-il nindru kondu 60's and 70's -il vanda padangalai athvum TV-il paarthuvittu Sivaji sariyillai endru sollathirkal" enbaen.

The technological advancements in cinema had made them talk like this, but no matter how big it grows still Sivaji is bigger than anything else.

Balaji,
This is also for you.In this thread you had asked for Sivaji's voice in songs and good songs in NT's films. Coupled wih the fact that I also spoke about Pattum Bharathmum, I am going for this song.

Film: Pattum Bharathmum
Dir: P.Madhavan
MD: MSV
Singers:TMS & PS
Release:5th Dec,1975

PS : Maan Thorana Veethiyil Melangal Ragam
TMS: Maan Thorana Veethiyil Melangal Ragam

Then JJ will ask " Paravaiilayae! Ungalukku Paadakooda Theriyuma"
NT will reply" Naan engae paadinen!Nee paadinathai appadiyae thiruppi sonnen" (you can hear NT's & JJ's voice in this dialogue in records too)

A NT- Bhimsingh combo movie that is not much talked about is Paar Magalae Paar. Ofcourse it was a successful 100 days movie and NT's action was praised, but somehow people doesn't remember it in the first instance. For me this movie was a totally different experience. A movie adapted from stage play, NT was something different in this when compared to the movies of that period.
Imagine a aristocratic, egoistic rich man with the Gouravam and anthasthu thrown in proper measure, you will get the character NT depicted. Right from the start, just like Avanthan Manithan, you can see his styles flourish.

The scene in which he puts up a Raja Nadai when he comes to see his new born children in the hospital, he will be in a hurry, but at the same time his gait will not change.

Then "Neerodum Vaigaiyile" song wherin the cigarate smoking itself would be presented in gorgeous style and the spin of his fingers to throw it away when the famous lines come
" Naan Kathalenum Kavithai Sonnen Kattilin Melae" standing perpendicular to the camera when you can see his right eye just slightly turning and indicating the children for which Sowcar will reply " andha Karunaikku Naan Parisu Thanthen Thotilin Melae"
( MSV- TKR/KD).
When the children grow up, he becomes more rich and cigarate becomes pipe. When Muthuraman brings in Vijayakumari to the house after taking her to a hospital for burns suffered in college lab, VK will introduce him to NT and he will simply say " Hello young man'' and will ask VK to go in. Then he will ask " enga veedu" for which MR will say " Mela Masi Veedhi" (Story set in Madurai).
NT "Mela Masi Veedhiya? Appa peru?
MR " Ramalingam, ana appa ippo illai, naanum ammavum matumthan"
NT" entha Ramalingam,accident-iliranthu ponarae,avara?"
MR" Amam"
NT "Ungalukku intha veedu, mill ithaellam irunthuthe--"
MR " ellam appaadiyae irrukku"
Till this time NT speaking on a matter of fact tone will turn and say"Dei Thambikku coffee kondu vaa'' enbar. With that single gesture he will establish the character in the minds of the audience.

What I mean to say that it was different in the sense that NT will be very casual in dialogue, mannerism and body language.
This casualness can be seen when he will ask "enna moonu perum rail vidureenga" pointing out to the Thalai pinnal (Sowcar doing to VK and VK doing it to Puspalatha). This is the scene where he will come and ask them to get ready for going to a cinema and at the end of the scene when everybody says that they are not coming,he will say " appo yaarum cinema poga vendam, ellorum velaiyai paarunga, ippo en pinnalae rail vidunga" a refreshing approach. Having come to know that one of his daughters is not his, his ego bruised but will still be the same. When VK in order to save the family takes the blame and leaves the home he will take it lightly and ask his servant (A.Karunanidhi) to remove her photo and break it. He will go to MR's house and will casually say that Chandra's (VK) chapter is closed. MR's mother (Rukmani-mother of Lakshmi) will casually ask " Kantha (PL) eppadi irukka" for which NT will say" avalum varaenu than sonnae, anal naan than andha veetukku nee satharanama pokakoodathu, melathalathudan than ponaminu solliten" enbar. Rukmani " puiyaliyae" endru solla, udanae NT romba casual-a "ithilae puriyarthukku enna irrukku? unga veetilae naanga sambandam pannanaminu ninachom.ana sila vishyangal nadanthu pochu.Ippo kanthavai sekarukku kodukkalaminu ninaikiraen" enbar. Rukmani "ethkkum Sekarai ketkama" ? Udanae NT oru Ponnu veetukaran mathirayae illama " avar enna matten=na solla porar? oru nalla nalla parthu nammuda veetukku vaanga" endru sollivittu (he will literally command and how majestic he will look) selvar.
Even in the unforgettable song "Aval Paranthu Ponalae" , Bhimsingh would have used NT's portion in the song in different angles. Just like "Kannin mani pole--" in Paasa Malar, where his eyes would be closeup-ed, here also NT's eyes will have a closeup for " aval enakka magalanal ---" , which will spontaneously bring in the applause in the theatre.
Coming back to my experience, I saw the movie 15 yrs after it's release( I was too small a kid when the movie was released in 1963) during my colege days. I saw the movie in my native Madurai-Sri Devi Talkies and if my memory serves me right it was in Oct 1978. We friends(read hardcore NT fans) went to the movie without any expectations but we were simply bowled over. After seeing it on Friday evening, we again went on sunday evening and again on Wednesday evening. Such was the impact of the movie on us. Now comes the twist.
In that year (1978) Deepavali happened on Oct 30th Monday and our NT was coming out with "Pilot Premnath". a Lankan- Indian co-production directed by ACT, we were just waiting for it. Also add to it that Oct 30th happens to be the B'day of my close friend, it was party time and what better way to celebrate than to see the movie, we were there in the theatre for the opening show (ie) 9 am at Central cinema,Madurai on Deepavali Morning
You know as PP also has a same story line like that of PMP, we were so dejected because PP in quality was no match for PMP. So sad were we, our group decided to go to "Puthiya Paravai" which had been released in Vellaikannu Theatre for Deepavali. We did go to the evening show for Puthiya Paravai to tide over the dissapointment of Pilot, whereas our original idea was to go to any one of the so many new releases for Deepavali (like Thappu Thalangal,Sivappu Rojakkal,Aval appadithan, Manitharil Ittanai Nirangala, Thai Meethu Sathiyam, Vandikaran Magan etc)

Regards

PS: It is another story that we went to Pilot for the second time after say 30 days when we were out of PMP hang over and found it not bad and we ended up seeing it 5 times in it's 100 days run in the same theatre,Central

Mr. Mohan ram.... thank you very much for sharing with us about Thanga padhakkam stage play in Mumbai . I am thrilled to read the great memory power of NT !
I have also seen NT playing the role of Shivaji and saying lengthy dialogues...

Another scene which probably will be the lengthiest .... NT playing a character with Raja sulochana and the dialogues penned by Kalaignar ... I dont remember the movie....
In one programme, Shivakumar narrated the entire dialogue right in front of NT and Kaliagnar !

Dear Murali Srivinas...

hats off to you ..... for the splendid memories and word by word presentation......

Now it has become fashinable in Tamil cinema to talk about "Getup change", different makeups and the "sacrifices" being made for some characters that they portray. With virtually all latest makeup kits available now at the click of a mouse, it has become child's play.Compare this situation when NT was around doing varied roles in 60's and 70's. He has to do it with whatever was available at that time.

In Navarathri, for the " Kushtarogi" role, once he had donned the make up (his hands and legs were all a part of the make up), he couldn't move around freely. If he removes the make up then it will be double the pain of again redoing the same. So APN planned it in such a way that the entire portion of that role was shot in one go.NT as usual came early morning to Saradha Studio and stayed there for 40 hours, without even going home.Since he could not use his hands(why hands even his mouth),he was given liquid food and that thro' straw. He slept in the studio that night because of the makeup and he a chain smoker those days couldn't even have a puff and only on the second day, they prepared a pipe like thing at the end of which a cigarrete was placed and lighted.

In the same way in Tiruvarutselvar, when he played Appar,he took a lot of pain to resemble Appar(NT took inspiration from Kanchi Sankracharya Chandrasekara Saraswathy's appearence) and when the makeup was finished literally his chin and cheeks were aching just for showing the Mugasurukkam. Especially in the climax when he literally crawls in Kailasa, his entire body was under severe pain which he didn't show till the shot was okayed.

But the makeup that takes the cake is Deiva Magan. It is said that for him to have that scar, they used all kinds of materials and if memory serves me right,I remember Aroordoss(the dialogue writer) in an interview having said that even small glass pieces were used to stick. More than the doing,it was removal that was painful.Infact when it was removed, at times blood was seen gushing out of NT's face. Even this would have been ok if NT was doing only the father and first son role, but he had to don the second son's role also for which his face should have a masu maruvatra look. See how he managed all these things beautifully.

Even in his earlier films when he had to do historical, Purana kathapathirangal, the pain he took for bringing in 100% perfection is unmatched even today. Even for a shot that hardly will appear for a minute in the screen, he took great care. In Gouravam, for Neeyum Naanuma song ( the song sequence beautifully presented in this thread by S.Balaji) he appeared as King George and as a Lietunant and he sat with the costume designer and showed him the old portraits of British Kings to bring authenticity to the dress. It was a fabulous job done by the costumer. In order to recogonise his work, NT took the still photographs of that role, laminated and framed it and hung it in his bedroom at "Annai Illam".

But the greatest thing about NT was he never flaunted about this publically.Infact he did not even utter a single word about the ordeals he underwent unlike modern day "heroes" who at the slightest pretext will start " Intha padathirkkga 10 kilo kurainchirukken, antha padathirkku 20 kilo koootinen, verum juice mattum sappiten, exercise panninen etc---" and will want us to believe that they have done somthing extraordinary. Why NT didn't utter a word? Mahendran(Thangapathakkam) comes out with an answer that NT thought that getup change, make up, all are part of the job. On his(NT's) own words " Eppo kathayai kettu padathil nadikiren-inu othukondu kai neeti kaasu vangaromo, appave ithalem athil adangidum. Antha character-kku enna thevaiyo athai cheyya vendiyathu antha nadiganoda kadamai." elaborating this he asked Mahendran" Ippo nee kathai vasanam ezutharae. Naan veetai vittu poi room pottu rathri thoongama sappadai maranthu ezhuthinen-inu solluviya?" NT made it look like simply as a part of the occupation (occupational hazard?).

Even here when everything is done for publicity, he was different.

Regards

PS: It is a beautiful irony that NT who strove every nerve for makeup and related things looked equally attractive even when he came sans makeup in Nengirukkum Varai and Moondru Deivangal.

The influence NT had over the film fraternity, whether it is the co-star,cameraman or Director was so great that the same got enshrined in their minds to reflect later. One such incident (I think some people might have heard about this) is like this.

Director K.Sankar(who passed away recently) was a very senior director and he commanded a lot of respect from all artists. As he was one of the "Guruswamys" (the other being Nambiar) he was held in respect. The incident I am referring to had happened in 1962, when Sankar was directing NT in "Alaya Mani" and MGR in "Panathottam". Alayamani's shooting will be in the daytime and as his wont MGR wil have Panathottam shooting in the night.

When this tight schedule was going on,people began to see a change in Sankar's attitude. In Panathottam set, he sarted asking for retakes, an act normally no people will dare to ask from MGR. As it is well known,MGR normally takes care of the camera angle,
direction etc and the director is there for namesake only. But with Sankar,it was different and even MGR handled him with respect.

So when the retake saga continued for 2-3 days,MGR was puzzeled and from one of the assistant directors he came to know about Alayamani's shooting. When Sankar ordered a retake for the next scene, MGR did it without objection and on completion of the shot took Sankar to a lonely spot and said " Neenga yaariyo manisile vachikittu enkitta retake ketkireenga.Intha Ramachandranalae enna midiyumo, athai mattum kelunga. Verai orutharai mathiri enkitta ethirparkatheenga".

When he heard this, Sankar realised his folly and acted accordingly afterwards.See how NT's capabilities had it's reflection on his contemporary too.

I had wanted to talk about "Yaar intha Nilavu", but since Mohanram sir had asked us not to do it now, I am holding it back. There is a prelude to this song which I wanted to tell, but let me do it later.

When I wrote about Alayamani, I thought I can put in something here more for the reason "Split Personality" was a common word used recently to speak about a performance of a hero. For me Alayamani is just the best bet for analysing such a role. There are so many scenes which will bring out the split character, but here I just wanted to speak about only one scene.

In the second half, with NT in the wheel chair,Saroja Devi stays back to care of him in his house though the marriage has not taken place.SSR,NT's friend doubles up as his secretary also stays there. NT recieves an invitation for a marriage and since it is important, he asks S.Devi to go to the function and tells SSr to accompany her.

S.Devi, draped in Pattu Putavai and in all ornaments will emerge from the room. Sivaji will be sitting and SSR will be standing and discussing something, when SSR will notice S.Devi. Sarvalangarapoojithayaga varum S.Devi-yai paarthuvittu SSR appadiyae meimaranthu poi nirpar. Avarkallukul erkanavae iruthantha kathalai patri thriyatha NT, avarum S.Devi-yai santhosathudan paarthuvittu " Sekar" endru thirumpuvar. Ithai kavanikkamal SSR appadiyae paarthukondirukka, NT-in mugabhavam methuvaga maarum, marupadiyum lesaga kural uyarthi "Sekar" enbar. No response. Innamum mugam sivakka marupadiyum, konjam periya kuralil "Sekar" enbar.Appothum SSR gavanikkamal S.Devi-yae paarthukondu nirpar. Athuvarai atakki vaithiruntha antha mirugam (split personality) viswaroopam edukka
antha veedae idinthu vizhuvathupol "SekaR" endru oru kathu kathuvar, antha oru second-il avar mugathil maari maari theriyum antha bhavangal, nobody can even think of doing that. The immediate change to normalcy will also be beautifully done by NT.

What can we say except exclaiming, A born actor!

[tscii:007fb71333]Murali,

Sorry, after a long time visiting this forum.

Excellent narrations of several NT's wonderful films. While reading your colorful points, my memory goes back to different NT films that I have seen many years back. How I enjoyed them, how Sivaji's fans mesmerized them. Especially Aalyamani, a great film, a must see for every one. As you said in one of your postings, ONLY IN NT's FILMS, you will see minute details and his acting wonders. You must be his fan to enjoy those unbelievable moments. Excellent work, please continue.

My uncle, who is just like you, a fanatic of NT films. He was the president of his college Sivaji fans association. Since my family is also from Madurai, may be you know him.

I would recommend this forum administrators preserve this thread as a priceless treasure. This thread has got many wonderful points that should be preserved.

The following should be the befitting reply to NT's contribution to Indian cinema (not just Tamil cinema): NT is the one who defined what an acting is. NT should be recommended for Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of his achievement in Indian cinema. So far, from Indian film world, I believe only Satyajit Ray has received that award. Like Satyajit Ray, our NT already received "Lègion d'Honneur", France award. With Indo-US realtionship looking up, it should not be tough to lobby for NT and make it happen.

High regards[/tscii:007fb71333]

I am reminded of an incident that happened to Lord Lawrence Olivier, the great shakespearean actor, during the film marathon man.His co-star dustin hoffman was a "method" actor and for a scene hoffman starved for three days and ran several miles till he got that "look and feel"...when Olivier was told of this he went upto Hoffman and said ..."why dont you try acting it's easier".....In fact NT once told me that it was Olivier's death scene in Richard III that inspird him for the death scene of the "rowdy" in Navarathri..as well as the epileptic scene in Raman ethanai raamanadi.....these great actors did not have to resort to gimmicks....they just "acted".

Dear tac,

Thanks for your comments and I am happy that you are also from Madurai. Hope we will be in touch.

Rajesh,

Just as you have mentioned,NT will be majestic in Kodi asainthathum song, but his unfaltering steps with a slight bend can be more prominently seen in " Yarukku Mapilai Yarro ", especially in the scene when NT and S.Devi will walk along the two sides of a pond. You can even set a time watch and you will end up finding that the slight bend because of the injury will repeat exactly in equal time frames. Another example for time frame shot I remember is the coming down of Appa Sivaji in Deiva Magan from a 20-25 step staircase. What a rhythematic steps.

In Kodi Asainthathum,my pick will be the lines in the second saranam
Penmai enpathal Naanam Vanthatha
Naanam Vanthathal Penmai Anatha

where SD will be lying down and NT, irandu kaalaiyum slight-aga agatri, thalayai leasaga thooki, irandu kaikalaiyum pant pocket-il vittu oru style kattuvar, applause allikondu pokum.

excellent Murali. What do you think about NT's comedy roles? Which one do you like most?

Murali Srinivas
18th April 2006, 08:06 PM
Rajesh, Great that we Madurai people are meeting up here.

Tac, when you asked about comedy roles of NT, I just thought,is it not a fact that most of NT fans and public in general always went for story based, family oriented senti films of NT, where his histronic abilities will be in full view. But I have had a feeling that NT was very much fond of doing light hearted comedies. If you go thro' his list then some films spring to mind.

In the chronological order, I remember

1.Kalyanam Panniyum Brahamachari:

NT-TR Ramachandran combo, this was one of the early film of NT.I think it must have been a pleasant surprise for the public when it was released because of the fact that they had seen only the fiery, oratorical Sivaji who excelled in Social mileu(Parasakthi) and historical Manohara. A very casual looking NT who just breezed thro' his character.

2.Sabash Meena ( I think this was NT's 51st movie, while the 50th was Sarangathara).

Another comedy that rocked theatres at that time, I was told. NT as a rickshaw wallah was good.Unfortunately I could not watch the movie in theatres ( I was not born when it was released and somehow I missed even during it's re release) and I watched it only in TV (DD,I believe) and what remains in my mind are the 2 songs " Chithiram Pesuthadi" a beautiful solo by TMS (music I believe was by TG Lingappa), where NT would be charming and Malini will be trying to look at the drawing. The second song is the rain song between NT & Malini ( Kana Inbam kanithatheno).

3. Balae Pandiya - 1962.

Evergreen entertainer that many people will vouch as the best comedy film of NT. The amazing part of this movie is the entire movie was shot in 14 days because NT had to leave for US. NT finished the film, went to US and when he came back the movie was released. Not for nothing people praise this movie because NT
did 3 different roles and MRR had 2 roles. The unforgettable Mama! Mappilai song is a regular in TVs and it has been discussed in this thread also.

4. Ooty Varai Uravu -1967

Another evergreen comedy. But unlike the earlier mentioned films, NT infact would play a serious character who would be forced to act as Dr. for Muthuraman & L.Vijayalakshmi's love. And along with VKR,how lovely he would have done that. The scene where they will try to give a name to LV was the best. They will name her as Rathi and NT will ask "Rathi, eppadi?" MR will say "Rathi",but VKR will simply walk away with the honours by his cool comment" A-an Rathi Rathi". Balaiah,Nagesh and VKR were excellent in this movie.

5. Galatta Kalyanam- 1968

This time it was CVR who was behind this and this was the movie for which Ramkumar Films was created. A rollicking comedy of NT trying to find 4 bachelors for the 4 sisters where the efforts of NT to change the mind of sanyasini Manoramo with the help of a little kid and making B.A.Gopi(V.Gopalakrishnan) as Gopi B.A. so that the "Graduate" condition of the last girl is fulfilled were humourous and enjoyable.Thangavelu as the father and Cho as the cousin of JJ added fun. The song "Appappa Naan Appanalada" was a runaway hit.

6.Anjal Petti-520 -1969

The only film where NT and TN Balu joined together, this movie had a storyline of the hero on mistaken notions writes a fiery letter to his manager and realises his mistake after posting the letter. His efforts to trace the letter before it reaches the addressee forms the story. A promising story line suffered because of weak screen play and moreover NT's continious releases during that period (1969 Mar-Thanga Surangam, May-Kaaval Deivam[Samundi, what a cameo it was], Jun- Guru Dhakshinai, Jul- AP 520 & Aug-Niraikudam) also played havoc.

7.Sumathi En Sundari -1971

Again the same combo of NT-JJ-CVR- Ramkumar films, but this time it was in colour. For me this was a comedy film where NT as an innocent Estate manager unaware of the outside world, unaware of even cinema and it's stars played the part to perfection. He would be very casual and very naive to believe the "stories" of JJ. One scene in his home where he will casually remark "unakenna, Maman thollai, thappichitu vanthu enga sogama irrukka. En uyirthan poguthu" will bring out the character. The misunderstanding of Thangavelu that JJ is NT's wife and NT unable to explain to him the real situation since he had lied to Thangavelu about his " wife" (an imaginary character) and the Dharma sankadangal he has to encounter in the course of the decisions taken by Thangavelu were simply enjoyable.Nagesh again did a superb part.

8.Anbe Aryuire - 1975

A real let down by NT and we could not believe that ACT would take such a film. The saving grace were the songs.

Other than this you can include the initial portions of Mahakavi Kalidas, Raman Ethanai Ramanadi and Bharatha Vilas where NT had done a fabulous job (especially MKKalidas), not to forget the cameo in Dhavani Kanavukkal.

I don't know whether I have missed any movie, but overall I feel majority of the people will choose Bale Pandiya & OVU. For me Sumathi should be close second.

Wish to add SELVAM to this list of comedy movies of NT.....

I think SVR was hilarious as a doctor

Though the theme was serious, IMO, its full of comedy....

later in the 90s, he did Lakshmi vandhaachu with Revathy and Pappimaa ...

not sure whether you will consider this in your list ?

Dear Balaji,

Thanks for reminding.Selvam released in 1966 (Depavali) comically dealt about the consequences of overbelieving astrology. As you said Rangarao as the Dr. simply stole the show and SV Sahasranamam as the villain (we will come to know only at the end) was a surprise.

Lakshmi Vanthachu (1986 Deepavali) was a remake of Rekha starrer Khubsoorat and Revathi did a good job. NT as the henpecked hubby was excellent and this film reinforces my feeling that NT loved to do light hearted comedies. Caught in between Punnagai Mannan & Maaveeran, this film went rather unnoticed

Thillaana Mohanaambaal is missing in the comedy films list. It is a classical as well as comedy film. Isn't it? Who will forget the train scene with Balaiah and other comedy scenes with Nagesh and others?

Kalnayak...

We are analysing the comedy type characters played by NT himself ..... TM is a movie where others played comic roles but the main characters NT and Padmini were always serious

Thanks Rami,

We missed Arivali. A movie which had long been in the making finally made it to theatres in 1963. Since I saw the movie in 1970's and didn't get an opportunity to see it again, I don't remember much from this. My fleeting memories are the song " Shanthamooleka, sowkiyamooleku " - a TMS-PB duet on NT-PB and the unforgettable comedy scene of Thangavelu teaching Muthulakshmi, how to prepare Chappathi.( "Athuthan enakku theriyume" this dialogue of TPM will be remembered for ever)

In Arivaali, I think even Kalaivaanar and TA Madhuram were there .... I think TAM will suspect Kalaivaanar and all these scenes will be quite funny ....
Also, Banumathy's fun filled acting is always a joy to watch......

Hello all Nadigar Thilagam fans,
There was a common preception and misunderstanding among young generation on Nadigar Thilagam's Box office records ..They thought NT was just a class actor who belongs to non-mass category .They didn't know NT was a box office king as well as a performer .NT had a track record of releasing max no of movies in a year and made most of them box office blockbusters .NT is the only hero balanced critical excellence as well as box office success .

In another thread I happened to give a glance of nadigar thilagam's box office mark and I am reproducing some of them here.

NT's Parasakthi had 1 year run
NT's vasantha Maaligai had almost one year run in Srilanka.
NT's Pilot Prem nath had almost 1 year run in Srilanka.
NT is the only hero released 2 of his movies on the same day and both crossed 100 days (not just one time)

In 1961 -in one year Nadigar Thilagam gave 3 silver Jublee movies Paalum Pazhamum ,Paasa Malar and Paava Mannipu ..Another movie though it was not a box office hit ,It was a master piece 'Kappalottiya Thamizhan'

In 1962 ..NT gave Aalayamani ,Bale Pandiya ,Padiththal mattum pothuma ,Paarththaal pasi theerum -all 100 days movies.

In 1964- Aaandavan kattalai ,Karnan ,Kai koduththa Deivam ,Nava rathiri ,Pachai Vilakku,Puthiya paravai ...
Totally 6 100 days movies in a year.

In just one year 1972 alone

Gnana Oli - 100 days
Thava Puthalvan - 100 days
Neethi -217 days
Pattikata Pattanama - 189 days
vasantha Maaligai - 287 days

As you know ,There was only one movie ran for 100 days on it's second release after many years of it's first release, none other than Veera Pandiya Kattabomman.

Joe,

I believe Gouravam had a record run in SriLanka, almost one year. Somebody confirm this.

As per Ramkumar's speech during Chandramukhi function, NT's Thangapathakkam was the first Tamil Movie ran 100 days in South Africa and Chandramukhi was 2nd reached that record recently.

Tacinema,
Thanks for the info!

I heard ,Gowrawam was the first movie the Dialogue Disk ( Vasanam Gramaphone) was released before the release of the movie in srilanka ..Because of this ,a huge crowd gathered the theatre on the previous day of the release ..Police had tough time to control the crowd and forced the theatre to start the show previous night itself ..Gowrawan ran more days in srilanka than in TN.

ONLY THREE GREAT ARTISTS REALLY CHALLENGED NADIGAR THILAGAM:.

•SAVITHRI – later got the famed certificate Nadigayar Thilagam , an apt name taken as an inspiration out of Nadigar thilagam….
•S.V.RANGA RAO – the veteran from our neighbourhood Andhra . who played character , comedy, villain roles with aplomb
•M.R.RADHA – Nadigavel , an extraordinary actor and infact was a senior to NT. Played hero , villain , comedy, character roles with consummate ease….

I wish to take up SAVITHRI first……

There are quite a number of movies the 2 great personalities had acted together :

a.PAASA MALAR – An affectionate brother and sister fondness and how they were together even at the end of their life . For them, it’s the blood relationship which is paramount….what comes later out of marital status is secondary
b.RATHA THILAGAM – Lovers coming out of college life , moving in different directions, NT serves for Indian army while Savithri gets into Chinese territory , plays a sensitive role which arouses suspicion to everyone about her intentions , finally scarifying her life for the sake of country and makes her lover NT realize the truth
c.PAARTHAAL PASI THEERUM – NT acts as a guardian and caretaker for Gemini’s first wife Savithri . A very low profile and matured play by both.. the transformation from a village girl to a blind mother of kamal will be fascinating to watch
d.Ofcourse NAVARATHRI

THE BEST OF THE LOT – KAI KODUTHA DEIVAM

I have seen many women and men getting emotional and serious even when you mention about the name of this movie ! you ask any person in the 50s , you will get the same reply ….such an exceptionally good movie…..

This movie featured a galaxy of stars , NT, SSR, KRV , SVRangarao , M.R.Radha , Pushpalatha and above all SAVITHRI…..

It’s a pure coincidence that all the 3 great stars also played their part in this movie but Savithri out performed, outscored, outwitted everyone including Nadigar thilagam !

Savithri plays the role of an innocent woman not knowing the harsh realities and the wicked men around …..for her life is something to enjoy, be good and do good …and you will get everything good …..

Every scene of Savithri will appear special as she sparkles with a splendid representation of innocence personified

One will not even realize that the best of Savithri, NT & SVR is yet to come as the first 1 hour of the movie will focus around NT, SSR & KRV and their friendship and marriage. Also KSG through few touchy and emotional scenes, builds the faith and understanding between SSR & NT.

An opportunistic villain M.R.Radha, trying to capitalize / maximize out of Savithri’s innocence, spreads rumours about her and blackmails her quite frequently …in the process, Savithri was forced to meet him at regular intervals which makes everyone suspicious about her character…and what follows is throwing abuse on her virginity and this disturbs her family members ….also makes SSR ( her brother ) move out of the house to Chandigarh where he comes across NT and both become thick friends….

As NT will be in pursuit of an alliance, he will come across Savithri accidentally , even before he could meet her formally and these scenes are excellently structured… As NT’s car gets impaired, Savithri, who passes by incidentally, gives him company and drops him at the place he wanted to ….while traveling, she exchanges with all the innocence about her life getting spoilt by MRR and others….Shivaji, listens to her with rapt attention and feels sympathetic …also develops a fondness….
And finally when he sees his alliance , much to his surprise , he finds Savithri there and decides instantly that if at all he marries someone, it will be Savithri only…..and conveys his acceptance to SVR , Savithri’s father….

Even before NT expresses his concern, he goes out of the house with his parents to convey the information. In these very few seconds one should see the reaction of SVR & Pushpalatha who start chiding Savithri for her ususal tantrums. And as usual, Savirthri not knowing what happened, would not care but wait for them to return.
Everybody has given then best in each and every frame of this movie.

Once accepting this proposal, NT will send out a letter to SSR with photograph of Savirthri. And as he walks in isolation , recollecting all the mini but interesting exchanges between him and Savithri, Kavignar Kannadasan steps in with another of his gem …

AAYIRATHIL ORUTHI AMMA NEE….Ulagam arinthidatha piravi amma nee, Paarvayile kumari amma, pazhakathile kuzhanthai amma, aayirathil oruthi amma nee..

Kavignar goes further to glorify the splendid character ….

Paalilum venmai…paniyilum menmai…. Pachai ilam kili mozhi nee solvadhu unmai…..

Paavigal nenjam uraithidum vanjam…unmai endru solvadharku deivamum anjum….

The character of Savirthri is brought out in these few lines..by

Pennodu thodree penoodu vaanzdhum….pen manadhu enna vendu puriya villayo…..

Kann enna kanno…nenjenna nenjo….kalangam solbavarku…ullam illayo !!

Those who had seen this movie will appreciate the precise wordings of Kavignar as each and every sentence precisely reflects the character of Nadigayar thilagam….

Shivaji , in a white dhothi, talking to himself, thinking about the innocence of Savithri, conveys his thoughts through this simple but nice song……

And just look at the body language from NT during this song…… He will be so swayed by Savithri’s innocence that when he sings PAZAKATHILAY KUZANDHAI AMMA….he will be give subtle change to his facial reaction ! great !! ….at the end of the song, he will virtually challenge everyone ….appadiyay veshtiyay varindhu katti kondu oru sandaikku varuvadhu pola !!

KSG also shows parallel shots showing the shocking reaction from SSR on seeing the letter and the photo of his sister Savithri ….becoming restless…trying to convey his opinion to his dear dear friend Shivaji but could not come out with any single word…..breaks his head and roams around in despair…….while his wife KRV , unaware of the background, innocently and worriedly watching the events happening around

Every scence that she plays, Savithri excels and sweeps away all those come across including Nadigar thilagam…..

I wonder if anyone could have out performed Nadigar thilagam like Nadigayar thilagam did in this movie….. Is it her extraordinary acting skills or the character or NT himself deliberately under played himself while allowing Savithri to excel ??!!

I COULD SEE NT ….THANNUDAYA KAYYAI KATTI KONDU SAVITHRIYIN OVVORU DIALOGUES KUM REACT PANNUVAAR………..

Those days, every song had a poetic meaning well supported by melodious music.....

I continue to wonder about this amazing characterization from the great KSGopalakrishnan ( KSG )

Joe, tac & Ramesh,

My first posting in this thread itself was about NT's BO performance. There I had given the list of NT's 2 movies released on the same day and I think it is all there in Page 60. Not only that there are so many BO records of NT still intact and I can quote many, but while writing I have to compare with the other actors of that time and the next generation actors who could not measure up to that performance. So I hesitated.

I will give one record from my home town Madurai. There was one Theatre in Madurai by the name SriDevi ( now it is an apartment complex). There NT's movies were alone screened for more than 15 months. It was like this

1. Engiruntho Vanthal - 29.10.1970 to 05.02.1971

2. Thangaikkaga - 06.02.1971 to 25.03.1971

3. Kulama? Gunamma? - 26.03.1971 to 02.07.1971

4.Savalae Samalee - 03.07.1971 to 17.10.1971

5. Babu - 18.10.1971 to 14.01.1972.

Recently I saw in Asianet, a theatre in Ernakulam had celebrated in the above said manner the screening of Mammootty's films for a period of 1yr and above. Then I remembered the above mentioned fact and thought how NT had done this even 35 years ago but unfortunately no celebrations were there at the time.

Joe again in 1972 you missed out one important movie (ie) Raja. 1972 was like this for NT

1.Raja- 26.01.1972 -100 Days

2.Gnana Oli - 11.03.1972 -100 Days (If my memory serves me right Gnana Oli was the first Tamil movie that was released in 5 theatres in Chennai and it completed 100 days in all)

3. Pattikkada Pattanama -06.05.1972 - 182 Days

4. Dharmam Engay - 15.07.1972 -50 Days

5. Thava Puthalavan- 26.08.1972 -100 Days

6. Vasantha Maaligai -29.09.1972 -200 Days

7. Neethi- 07.12.1972 -100 Days.

Such a terrific run prompted Sridhar to announce a film "Hero-72" which later came as Vaira Nenjam.

Ramesh, the other movie along with O.V.Uravu was Iru Malargal and the release was on Deepavali day of 1967.

Joe,

Thanks again for the avatar and thanks for the still of Deiva Magan, the scene which I described in my post.

Balaji,

Kudos to you for bringing out the nuances of Kai Kodutha Deivam. As you were wondering whether Nadigayar Thilagam upstaged NT, it was NT who willingly played second fiddle so that the Savithri character and the movie come out well. That shows the broad mindedness of NT. You can give so many examples like Dharumi's role in Thiruvilayadal, Savithri's in KKD, Devika's in Neelavanam, JJ's in Padhukappu, Vanishree's in Punniya Bhoomi,so on. Kooda nadikira ISR ponravargal nandraka nadithal, antha chinna scene-i kooda editing-il cut pannivarkal iruntha antha kaalathil, thannudan nadikkira young hereos-irkku paatu kooda kodukathavargal iruntha antha kaalathil, thevaipattal Thengai Srinivasan-ikum paadal katchi amaivathai ethirkathavar NT. He never feared anybody. He had talent on his side and that's why he was able to lock horns with the likes of Savithri, SVR,MRR, TS Baalaiah,SV Subiah, Banumathi etc.

NT's Thirisoolam ran everywhere. During this time, NT's other movies like thiyagam, sandhippu, neethipathi, theerpu, and so on did very well. These movies were BO successful, though they were very mediocre in NT's own standards.

Occassionally, even during 80s, he did good roles in vellai roja, andhaman kadhali, keelvaanam sivakkum, vaazhkai. NT's performance in these movies were good and made them BO successful. Another movie Bhandham with "baby" shalini was reasonably good. My uncle used to say that not a single NT movie ran less than 100 days in Central talkies in Madurai. This includes his movie "Thaikku Oru Thalattu", which is a very mediocre movie. BTW, this movie hall is pretty big, not like 200 seating capacity.

Dear members: Never question NT's BO performance. I believe, until late 60s, his BO performance was better than MGR's. One of Kamal's fans in other thread was saying that NT movies ran only in cities. That is simply not true. When I was very small, my family lived in then small town Pudukottai. We lived there for 7 years and the only movie during that time crossed 50 days was NT's Thirisoolam. So, my advice to everyone in the forum is read the history and only then comment about the legend Simma Kuralon NT.

Tac,

You are right in saying that NT excelled in BO, better than MGR. It was true. NT was not only Nadippu Chakravarthy but also Vasool Chakravarthy. But unfortunately this fact was overlooked by media at that time and a general impression gained ground that MGR as the BO king. If you could see MGR's graph, after 1968, he had only few super hits like Adimai Penn, Nam Nadu, M.Velan, Rickshawkaran till 1971. Between 1971 & 1978, when his last movie M.M.S.Pandiyan was released, he had just 3 hits (ie) U.S.Vaaliban, Urimaikural & Idhyakani. In the same period as I had mentioned NT had a dream run starting from Deivamagan in 1969 to Tirusoolam in 1979. To just give one example of NT's BO power, in Madurai,

Ricksahwkaran - 1971- 161 Days- Rs 4,09,000
Pattikada Pattanama -1972 - 98 Days- Rs 4,10,000.

In 110 days,PP also broke Adimai Penn's 175 days collection (Rs 4.34 L) & M.Velan's 177 days gross (Rs 4.33L).

See the ticket rates were not hiked and the same rate was prevailing. PP went on to gross Rs 5,61,000 in it's 182 days run which is still the benchmark for any B/W Film. Only one MGR movie grossed more than this and it required a film of USV's magnitude to overcome this simple village story.

As for as Tirusoolam,One record in Madurai is suffice to indicate how big a hit it was. Released on 27th January,1979, in Chintamani Talkies, till May 25th 1979,all shows were housefull (i.e) for 120 days, all shows and that totalled 401 were housefull shows, a feat unmatched by any actor. It eventually went on to complete 200 day run and it totally grossed 10.28 L from that single theatre, which if converted in today's value should be 1 crore and above.

Tac, you were also mentioning that some fans in other thread had derided NT's BO performance. Let them check their own track record, which is to put it simply absymal. Their star cannot hold a candle in front of NT both in performance and in BO success.

Regards

PS: Friends thanks for making me remember Madurai and it's sweet memories, as I am away from it.

Balaji,

To a certain extent what you told about NT's films after 1975 is true and whatever good films happened could not be compared to the classics of 50's,60's & early 70's. The main reason behind this development was the remake culture that set into Tamil Filmdom. Earlier there were story writers and directors who were straining every nerve to write stories for NT and his acting talent. But during the mid 70's, the trend in Tamil began to change and NT accordingly had to do films which catered to the taste of the audience of that period. Even before this NT had a strategic change in the late 60's as for as his roles were concerned. Before going into this, let me tell that point also.

From 1952 to 1965/66, NT's fans were considered to be of soft nature consisting mainly of educated, middle class people. But slowely a group from the fans was emerging aggressively and they wanted NT to give a fitting reply to his detractors. That was about the criticism that NT can't fight,do action roles etc. The fight between the two Thilagams was growing and since both happened to be on the opposite side of each other in political camps too, the rivalry between the two fans' grew manifold. After a certain stage this group became vociferous and since it consisted of mainly youngsters, NT had to give in. There comes Balajee and his Sujatha cine arts.NT having not done stunt scenes till that time (barring a few),though he was 112 films old, tried his hand with "Thangai" (1967). Since there were not many writers to script an action film for NT, Balajee bought the rights of a Telugu movie and ACT (his first film with NT) directed the same. It went on to become a hit and with Balajee coming out with more action oriented films like En Thambi & Thirudan, other producer/directors also started making movies of NT in that genre.

So coming back to 1975, when again he needed continious hits to suit the changing trend, the writer/directors choose the safe path (ie) remake. So when you borrow something to suit the giant, there were many hitches and it showed in the quality.

Regards

Dear Murali,

You are awesome. Your statistics about NT's performanace is simply mindblowing. I bet in this forum, no other actor fans can beat you in this respect. Please continue this work.

You forgot to add one nice NT's action-type movie Raja, made by Balajee. I simply love that movie.

More later

I happened to watch VCD of a function'Imayathirkku Inthiya Anjali' tribute to Nadigar Thilagam sivaji after his death ..Malayala superstar Mohanlal came to the stage and said "There are seven wonders in this world .Let us add one more to it and make it eight .Nadigar Thilagam sivaji is always the celluloid wonder"

1975

1. Picture: Manithanum Deivamagalam
Banner: Vijayavel Films
Director: P.Madhavan
MD : K.Vaidyanathan
Starring: NT(Double Role),UNandini,Sowcar,Nambiar etc
Release: 11.01.1975

Chinna Annamalai, nagaichuvai writer in journals and magazines eventually became the President of All-India Sivaji Ganeasan Rasikar Mandram and he was the producer of this movie. First it was named as “Itho Endhan Deivam” and then it was changed to “Thangathilae Vairam” and finally became “Manithanum Deivamagalam”.( A movie by the name of I.E.Deivam got released later *ing KRV &Major). The story plot had an interesting subject (ie) fight between belief and non-belief. The elder brother NT is a temple priest in a village & is a staunch believer in God and the younger brother educated in Chennai is an atheist. When the younger brother returns home, a clash starts between the two ideologies and the village big head, who wants to loot the temple property makes use of this split. UNandini the daughter of Nambiar is the lady in love with the younger NT. A novel plot, which was pregnant with interesting twists, unfortunately fell short of expectations. The introduction scene of younger NT, when he saves a child in the train from falling thro’ the open door itself will give a glimpse of his character. He will call the child’s father and scold him. Child’s father will look heavenwards and say “Murugan Kappathitan”. NT will turn furious and ask “ Murugan Kappathinana? Un kuzhathayai kizhe vizhame naan kappathinen. Murugan kappathinanmila, Murugan” endru munumunuthukonde povaar. In the same manner tension will mount when Palkudam oorvalam for Murugan will be coming , the younger NT with the batch of deprived kids will also march to the temple demanding milk for the children. Both the NTs will be singing and a wordy duel will take place in front of the temple. Such interesting scenes were few and far. KV used Sirkazhi for the elder and TMS for the younger NT. Though he again used some of his earlier Bakthi Paadal tunes (like he did in RRChozhan) like “Muthuvel Rathinavel—“ , two songs “ Vaazkaiye Bodhai Nadagam” and “Paal Pongum Paruvam” (meter-ikku adangatha pattu?) were hits. Overall a movie, which should have been good, became average, but cannot be said as mediocre.

2. Picture: Avanthan Manidhan
Banner: Rasi Enterprises
Director:ACT
MD : MSV
Starring: NT,JJ,Manjula,Muthuraman & Major.
Release: 11.04.1975

I have already posted many scenes regarding this movie, which happened to be the 175th movie of NT. A class act in both style wise and acting wise, this will remain in memory forever. One thing to be noted is the music of MSV. Songs like Oonjalukku Poochooti, Anbu Nadamadum Kalaikoodame, Engiruntho oru kural vanthathu, Attuvithal yaar oruvar, Manithan Ninaaipathundu ellame ondrai ondru minjakoodiyathu. Normally ACT prefers Vaali for his films right from Anbe Vaa.
When he could not demand like when Balajee or Sivaji productions were involved (see Thangai, En Thambi,Thirudan & Deiva Magan [Shanthi Films]) where Kannadasan ruled, otherwise he used Vaali for Babu, Bharatha Vilas &Dr.Siva (all produced by ACT’s Cine Bharath). He also used Vaali for Enga Mama & Anbe Aruyire. Why I am writing all these because, ACT wanted Vaali for AM, but KNSubbu, the producer of AM was the cousin of Panchu Arunachalam (Panchu was the dialogue writer for AM) and their proximity to Kannadasan decided the issue in favour of KD. And what gems did KD and MSV gave us.The songs will continue to be immortal. One example for the same is in Attuvithal song there will be a saranam

Panjali Unnidathil Selai Kettal; Andha
Parthanavan Unnidathil Geethai Kettan
Naan Irukkum Nilayil Unnai Enna Ketpen; Innum
Nanmai Seithu Thunbam Vaangum Ullam Ketpen.

Forget about this scene and NT’s acting. These 4 lines will be used in the film “Ponmanam” (1998), where Prabhu is forced to lie to the heroine that he is not in love with her. She will shout at him, accuse him and challenge him that she will find a better groom than him. When she leaves, these 4 lines will echo in the background and Prabhu will silently suffer. I saw this movie in Kerala and you will not believe the applause it drew from the audience. That shows the popularity of the song and it’s impact.

Overall, AM was an unforgettable movie. The only part that stood like a sore thumb was the comedy track.

3. Picture: Mannavan Vanthanadi
Banner: JR Movies
Director:P.Madhavan
MD : MSV
Starring : NT,Manjula,Nambiar etc
Release: 02.08.1975

JR movies had two partners PKV Sankaran &PKV Arumugam, who hailed from Tenkasi. Their first movie was Puthiya Bhoomi in 1968. ( People used to say that JR itself implied Janaki Ramachandran). Then they switched sides and produced Enga Mama in 1970 and Gnana Oli in 1972 with NT. With the success of both, they immediately announced Mannavan and Manjula was paired for the first time with NT. Though this was the first movie of Manjula started with NT, because of the delay happened in release, En Magan(1974) & AM(1975 April) came before this. Again a rich vs poor story which had shades of Taming of the shrewd, The Nadodi NT in the first half will come as the rich man in the second half and how he defeats the evil design of Nambiar formed the story. NT will have a sister who will be wronged and will give birth to a child. An entertainer that was targeted at the mass and it served its purpose by celebrating 100 days. Again another musical with hit songs like Kaadhal Rajjiyam Enathu , Sorgathil Kattapatta Thottil were chart busters. The first song in the film Naan Naatai Thirutha Poren andha Kottayai pidikka poren will probably be the only Kolgai Parappu song of NT, which came in handy when he founded Tamizhga Munnetra Munnani.

Overall a mass entertainer not up to NT’s standard, but still was watchable.

(To be contd)

1975 Review Contd

4. Picture: Anbe Aruyire
Banner: Amutham Pictures
Director:ACT
MD : MSV
Starring: NT, Manjula and a host of comedy actors.
Release: 27.09.1975

As I had mentioned in comedy films of NT post, an avoidable movie. We were unable to understand why NT gave his nod to such a story, probably because of ACT?, we are not sure. But ACT was in equal measures to be blamed for this fiasco. Some good songs like Malligai Mullai Poopanthal & Raja veedhi Bhavani vandhathu were the only saving graces.

Overall, one more movie added to the list of NT. Nothing else.

5. Picture:Dr.Siva
Banner:Cine Bharath
Director: ACT
MD : MSV
Starring: NT, Manjula, Jayamalini etc.
Release: 02.11.1975 ( Deepavali)

Again another NT-ACT combo which promised much, but somewhere in execution it failed to make the cash registers ring. NT will come as a Dr. who will want to devote his life to eradication of Leprosy. He will choose a village inhabited by Tribal people where leprosy will be prevalent. His wife Manjula will initially help him in all aspects. But slowely his 24 hour devotion will start driving a wedge between them and a suspicion about NT’s character will make her seek separation which will be fanned by Major (Father/Brother? Of Manju). Ofcourse it’s a happy ending and rather a timid climax (rather anticlimax) was rather responsible for people not appreciating the same. 1975 for NT can safely be said, as a musical year for his films and Dr.Siva was no exception. Malare Kurinji Malarae, Thaja Panninathan intha Roja, Nallavr Kuralukku, Kaadhal – were all hits at that time and Malarae (First time KJY sang for NT) is an all time hit.
As I had mentioned earlier, at this point of time (to be precise, Oct 2nd), Perunthalaivar Kamaraj had passed away and a pale of gloom set in the Congress camp. There were two opinions emerging. One group wanted to continue as Congress (Organisation) and another wanted to join Congress (Indira). The fans were anxiously waiting for NT to officially react and there were mixed signals. This was one of the outside factors that adversely affected the movie.
Overall, another that promised much but failed to deliver.

6. Picture: Vaira Nenjam
Banner: Chithralaya
Director: Sridhar
MD : MSV
Starring : NT, Padmapriya, Muthuraman etc.
Release: 02.11.1975 (Deepavali)

Sridhar seeing the Super success of NT in 1972 announced Hero-72 and the movie stared with much fun fare. Padmapriya was drafted as the heroine but for her also, her first movie that happened to release was Carotti Kannan with Thengai (a sequel to Kaliyuga Kannan but which bit the dust). A crime detective subject formed the story and NT came as a police officer. NT was as usual stylish, but a subject that was slightly alien to Tamil was a drawback. The movie itself was of a short duration (just 2hrs 15 mins) compared to the trend of that period and out of this NT will get introduced only after 35 mins and this was not liked by fans. Another factor that went against was, Sridhar supposed to be a NT camper switched sides and made Urimaikural with MGR that got released in 1974.He was supposed to have made some remarks regarding both Thilagams and this was not taken well by NT fans who felt that Sri deliberately downplayed VN. Here again MSV came out with great nos like Neeradum Neram Nalla Neram and En Priyathirkuriyavalae that were regulars in Pongum Poompunal of Radio Ceylon.

Overall, a movie (rather a stylish one) went unnoticed.

7. Picture: Pattum Bharathamum
Banner: Arun Prasad Movies
Director:P.Madhavan
MD : MSV
Starring: NT (double role),JJ, Sripriya, Vkumar &Major.
Release: 05.12.1975

A classical that was to be in the lines of Thillana was not to be. NT the rich business tycoon reluctantly agrees to preside over a dance performance of JJ ( a simple scene where he will establish his character is, on entering the auditorium, NT will ask his PA, VK” Ithukku evvalavu Vaadagai irukkum “ atharkku VK “En ketkeereeinga” , NT will reply “ Ille, ippadi oru 4 hall kattipottuta vadagai varumile” enbar. A typical business man) and after a series of meeting each other, both will fall in love and NT will start learning Bharatham and as usual opposition comes in the form of NT’s father (Major). With the help of VK, he will make NT believe that her character is suspicious. JJ will be asked to come to a hotel to meet NT and NT will be told that she is there with somebody. NT will shout at her and she will go away. She would be carrying NT’s child. NT meanwhile realizing his mistake will search for her. JJ will return with his grown up son (again NT) and finally all ends well. Though NT cannot be said to have mastered dance, did an earnest attempt at the age of 47, but too much of pathos had also gone against the movie. When this movie was hardly 15-20 days old, news came out on the political front that NT is going to join Congress (I) and for many hardcore Perunthalaivar loyalists cum NT fans, this was unacceptable and ultimately the movie suffered. Again MSV gave gems like Manthorana Veethiyil, Deivathin Ther eduthu etc. There was one Mayil dance in the movie that was worth mentioning.

Overall, an above average movie.

So that was the score card of NT in 1975. Expecting all your views

Murali,

Lot of info. One thing puzzling me, was NT forced to do these many movies in 1975 or after? In the movies listed here, except AM, I don't think I will be able to watch any other movies completely. I love NT so much that none of other movies can meet his own standards. I got a chance to watch Dr. Siva recently and I was not able to complete it because the movie completely lacked NT stamp. One cannot believe, ACT made an unbelievable movie Deivamagan with NT and a crappy movie Anbe Aruyire.

I want to ask you this: I always felt Sivaji-Sridhar combo lacked some substance and they did not make classics. Sridhar made hit movies like UVUravu and Sivandha Mann with Sivaji. Compare these movies with Sridhar classics such as Nenjam marappathillai, nenjil oor aalyam, Kadhalikka nermillai and NT-Sridhar combination do not stand in front of them. In fact, Sridhar-Gemini combination produced evergreen hits and classics such as Then Nilavu, sumaithangi and Kalyana Parisu. In my view, Sivaji and Sridhar were individually so talented, but their combination did not produce expected results. If it had worked out well, then we would have got classics in the grand scale of VPKattabomman and Uththama Puthiran. Any reason why NT-sridhar combo missed substance?

Thanks for info. Please continue your good work on this forum

tacinema,
I agree with you..I am not impressed with 'Sivantha man'..Such a great director sridhar was..But unlike balachandar who made movies without compromising for the actors ,I think Sridhar off late made movies for actors ,not just follow his own ..Eg :He did movies for MGR ,Urimai kural and Meenava nanban which are more MGR movies than shreedar movies ..Both are pakka commercial movies with political propaganda..I beleive sridhar also did 'Thudikkum karangal' for rajini and crap movie 'Naanum oru thozhilaali' to kamal.

[tscii:be7ae2765c]The following is the remebrance of Manorama on Shivaji. This interview was taken 3 days after the death of Shivaji.

It was in 1955 that I first met 'Nadigar Thilakam' Sivaji Ganesan. I was acting in a drama company in Thindivanam, and Sivaji had come to watch a performance of ours.

The play was Neethipathi.

I can’t say how excited all of us were when we came to know that he would be coming to watch the play. We had seen his films like Parasakthi and were great fans of his. On that day, all I could think of was Anna’s visit. I could not even think of what I was going to say on stage.

I had a double role in the play; I was the heroine and also the villain. Anna watched the whole drama intently and then spoke.

He said, "The girl who played a double role in the drama acted superbly. She enacted both the roles so differently that it is difficult to find that it was the same person. I am amazed. It is not at all easy to do a double role in a drama. I can only compare her acting talent to that of Anjali Devi."

I was in the seventh heaven. Anjali Devi was the topmost heroine those days. When Anna compared me to her, I could not control my tears.

After the function, he came to me and said, “I am certain you will come up in life. You have a great future.”

That was my first meeting with Sivaji Ganesan -- an unforgettable one.

Later, I came to Madras and started acting in Kalaignar Karunanidhi’s dramas.

Anna would watch them and tell others that I acted very well. Not once did he tell me directly that I was good. Even when I gave a good shot, he would say, "It was good but you can do better."

He said so because he wanted me to excel.

But he would tell others, "There is no one who can beat Mano in emoting," and those people would come and tell me.

It was only after I did Thillana Mohanambal with Anna that people started accepting me as an actress. I was very frightened before the shoot began. The very thought of me acting opposite Sivaji made me a nervous wreck.

There was a scene in the film where I had to listen to him play the nadaswaram, and then play the same ragam. We had to compete with each other; it was a memorable experience.

Another scene will be etched in my mind always -- his line was: “We should be brother and sister not only in this birth but in all the other births too.” Then, I was to reply: “Anna, even now, I am your sister and that will never change.”

I can't forget these dialogues and the way he delivered them. You had to be there near him to enjoy his skill. I was one of those fortunate people.

Only once did he tell me that I acted well -- that was on May 26 this year. It was my birthday. And, as usual, I had gone to take blessings from my Anna. He blessed me and gave a Rs 100 note as a gift.

We started talking about various things, and his wife happened to comment about somebody else who made a mess while delivering dialogues in the Madurai dialect.

Immediately, Anna looked at me and said, "Come on, is there anybody else here who can talk in different dialects like Mano? She is the only person and she is an expert."

Those words still resonate in my ear; they transported me to heaven. That was the first time he directly praised me.

I don't want to say how good an actor he was -- everybody knows how good he was. All those who came after became famous because of his dialogues.

Even Kamal Haasan as a little boy got attention in Kalathoor Kannamma by repeating the dialogues that Anna said in Veerapandiya Katta Bomman. Why? Because Anna was the authority in acting.

He was an acting encyclopaedia.

Have you seen his introductory scene in Parasakthi?

S S Rajendran was trying to wake him up but he was not supposed to. When he did, you should see the way he threw away the sheet and looked at the camera! It was like a lion getting up from his sleep.

The lion which woke up from his sleep, nearly 50 years ago, never slept after that; he was roaring ever since.

Have you heard of any other actor who rose to such heights with one film? There is only one -- Sivaji Ganesan. No one else has such talent, ability and good luck.

God has given him such luck that it never left him till the last moment. I am witness to it.

After the day’s shooting at a casino in Kathmandu, we decided to try our luck out.

Anna put in a 50 paise coin and turned the knob. You should have seen the number of coins that poured out! He put one more coin. Again, there was a flood of coins.

That is why I say he was born with the luck of a king, and he remained a king even after his death.

One of my dreams was to act in a film directed by him. Unfortunately that was never fulfilled.

In real life too, he was my brother. I would enter his house and run upstairs, where he would be resting.

I shared everything, both happiness and sorrow, with Anna. He would console me whenever I was down.

He was not like my own brother; he was my own brother. When my mother passed away at 5:45 hrs one morning; Anna was at my home in fifteen minutes. He wanted me to inform my brothers and sisters. When I said, I had none, he pacified me by saying, ‘You have me, your Anna’. He immediately took charge just as my own brother would and sat outside till the body was taken to the crematorium.

How could I repay him?

He knew to act only before the camera; he never acted in front of people. He was genuine.

The moment I came to know of his death, I ran to his house and sat there near the body. I didn’t get up till his body was taken out. I refused to even to drink a drop of water.

Later on, I stood in the lorry for three hours and accompanied his body to the crematorium. The others told me to eat; but I refused. I wanted to punish my body and show my gratitude to my Anna. How else could I show my love for my own brother?

In October, he would complete 74. We wanted to have a huge celebration for his 75th birthday, but that was not to be.

I have lost my own brother. My only wish is to be born as his own sister in the next birth.

Joe dear

I think Nenjirukkum varai ( without make up for all ) was a Sridhar - NT combination other than Ooti varai ......

Also, he is one director who is very difficult to judge . we cant classify him under any particular type of director as he did all type of movies..

but in the 70s he lost direction and did movies for the sake of survival like :

1. Ilamai unjalaadugiradhu ( by no means a sridhar movie )
2. azagay unnai aaradhikiren
3. Urimai kural
4. Meenava nanban
5. Thenralay ennai thodu
6. Thandhu viten yennai ( vikram's first )

etc etc

any creative director, his creativity lasts for a maximum of 15 to 20 movies and after that he become stale... the only exception was KB
