Thank You, Krishnan. Listening to Raaja's Manikantan Geet Mala (Two language CD pack). I love the Malayalam & Tamil tracks since I'm familiar with the lyrics. I listen to it during this season and on New Year.

Similarly there are a few movies in the cans and they probably will get to see the light of the day. Can we start a new thread to discuss that? That way the concerned people can get to bear our anguish and one day make some sincere efforts to release it.

Nadi thudikkuthadi.
Suka/Aryas maiden production
Few more I am trying to recollect.

Rooky, I actually remembered "Kutramae Thandanai", but the movie already got released in 2015, if I am not wrong. The movie did not have any songs.

"Naadi Thudikkudhadi" movie has not released, is it? I know the songs were released.

Arya's maiden production is listed, but I think it is suspended (read the news somewhere)

HAPPI was one movie which I was very eagerly looking forward to as the theme/era and the settings (hero was a jazz player??) was different. The BGM was performed by Budapest orchestra I think. But, the makers totally disappointed by not releasing the movie/music yet.

BTW, Wiki seems to be listing a few more upcoming movies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilaiyaraaja_discography

Oyee musical.
Extravagant in style and pulsating and well within Raajas repertoire. He didnt dilute a bit.
No compromise in his mission.

It is going to put out a lot of young rookies out of business including his little cub.

For a record we had 94 music directors (I will never use the word composer anymore) that contributed in 2015. We had 200+ straight movies inspite of Rain , floods and all the crazy rules made by producers council to release on a particular window without clashes?

Lets ask this important question?
How many succeeded mesically?

In his hay days about 40 of his movies suceeded in A, B, C and lesser known D centers all because it had great music that connected well with the audience. We had all the genres crime , thrill, devotional, family drama , musicals , and what not!!
Today it is just one genre love story madurai backdrop some naivity and nativity when they mouth the dialogues, punch lines and 3 out of 5 colourful songs. Oh and I missed kuthu, Gaana and Tasmac brand of songs.

Payanangal mudivathillai, we had one song but today when I listen , man mindblowing, original , stunning , unbeatable. Can such a genre get any decent or elegant?
Indomitable Raaja.

I finally got to see thru Techsatish.net online.
Wow. Nice to see him maintain his composure.
Once he got trigerred but quickly returned to normal mode.
Overall I had known most of the facts including Kanchi periyavaa incident.
Mother Theresa fact was not known to me.
His youth watering plants in Vaigai dam site heard and read several times.
Lookslike the crew had less time to prep ?

Nevertheless a pleasant sign and relief from DD doing a stereotype mode glorifying and elevating the wannabies whose accomplishments are just mediocre or in some cases none but they make us feel unwarranted adieu given to some lesser talented guys or newbies.

The upcoming Ilayaraaja 1000 program in February is what we fans will cherish.
Thanks to Vijay TV once again.

"Tharai Thappattai" movie - Music was mindblowing:bow: Songs sounded great when the audio was released but along with the movie, they just got better. For instance, "vadhana vadhana Vadivelane" didn't impress that much on first listen but along with the movie, it was awesome. I thought "aattakkaari maaman ponnu" wasn't included in the movie even though I heard the prelude just before the "vadhana vadhana Vadivelane" song. RR was just...brilliant. Yet another instance of music elevating the movie to another level. I cannot think of anyone who could have come up with a more perfect score for this movie.

I don't like Bala but his movies are something else and I can hardly wait to watch them even though I know they will be "darker than dark". They leave some impact on you for even days. That is why Bala the director is special. In the current generation, he is probably the best to bring out the best in anyone, including Raja. Movie was great until about the second part of the second half. The villain gave a good performance but kodutha kaasukku mela koovinaar. Sasi finding Varalaxmi was cinematic. Re: the song that trolls actors, was it Raja who mixed that? They played Vijay's Shahjahan song, Suriya's Singam, Kamal's Indian, Rajni's murattu kaalai. I don't think Raja would have even heard those songs and I don't think anyone, even Bala, would dare to ask Raja to compose something that would mock these songs. Must have been some assistant.

Varalaxmi did great. Kunthaani (no offence) maadhiri irunthukittu enna aattam. Music appadi.

The theme used in the climax was out of the world. I liked the hero theme too even though reviews said it was very predictable and nothing special.

Raja sir, needoozhi vaazhga.

Thozhar, you are right about Bala employing his assistants for thar additional spoofy medley. Raja generally does not get involved in these remixes.
Bala is already notorious for such things , like using some string of old songs in Pithamagan and Naan kadavuL. Raja is in no way connected with them. :)

@73 he is composing such melodies and with extravagant arrangements.
It just goes to show if the composer is all game going for new age sounds without compromising in his core values and challenging the synth loops there are several more amazung ones to be unearthed!
Like Raaja says music is an ocean and he has only understand learnt and used very miniscule levels to this date.
1000+ movies , 5000+ songs and still re inventing himself in all the genres?
How is that possible.
The other greats engaged only in coming up with tunes and let the assistants and conductors improvise.
Here is a simple man who sits in his small room , modest , down to earth gives 8 to 10 tunes within 10 minutes and lets the director pick his choice, locks it down goes to the next situation and within end of the day writing the music on paper for whatever he had in his brain cells conceived as the output , gets it across to his team and finishes the final recirding the same day.
Who else is following this method today and he is a septagenarian and still working hard after 4 decades of toilling non stop round the clock!

Salute this man
Now waiting for oru melliya kodu/ Game . read somewhere he has one duet shot in switzerland, one song shot in thailand and BGM ofcourse will be unparallel for the kind of genre of this film. AMR Ramesh will move to the next league of directors with just this film.

Somehow these kind of IR being the MD for newbies do not enthuse me any longer, as these "uppu peRAdha " films generally elicit only lackadaisical songs output from IR unlike the 80's where any damned film, say EVK, for instance , bearing his name is still remembered ONLY for his everlasting songs

Sad state of affairs and we have been seeing this since late 90s.
Just to recollect, there was a movie called "kadavul" by velu prabhakar (another obsessed character)and movie had Roja as the central character. There were 4 out of 5 gems . songs class apart and also completely in sync with the situations and storyboard. 96-97 I think. Movie sank without a trace. Even now I listen to these songs on Raaga and other legal outlets. I kind of immerse into these songs as it is so soulful. This is only Raaja-possible. 20 years gone and songs are still fresh and addictive and best part completely syncing with story characters and directors vision. I wonder how this man does it for every tom dick and harry and every genre time and again not worried about the fate of the movie . just pure intentions . only objective is to deliver music that can embrace our souls or atleast awaken all the necessary feelings like saying the word ' Rekindle'

Somehow I feel we are gifted to having him as a part of our life and journey.

Rasayya, Thumbur, Krish - Well said. Some of the best and biggest albums of Raaja came from worst performing movies. That's the reality and how movie industry works. Raaja always quotes this phrase "Anything can happen in Cinema". Look at ace director Sridhar's "Ninaivellam Nithya" with poorly choreographed songs. The songs in NN is Gold standard for film music. Unfortunately the super-hit songs couldn't lift the box office collections. Later, Director Sridhar stuck gold with his mediocre movie "Thendrale Ennai Thodu" with a brilliant song album. The movie ran for more than a year in Salem and Coimbatore.

Bharathiraaja suffered with his flop "Nizhalgal" but the album had Platinum jubilee with Gold standard composition. Many such super albums came from box office disasters - Pattakathi Bhairavan, Solla Thudikuthu Manasu, Gramathu Athiyayam, many Vijaykanth films, Vikram, just to name a few from his cache of more than 1000 film albums. We all know hundreds of films which ran just for His songs. The current reality is that movies should have 100% superior script, story line, acting and novelty to even run for 30 days. There are no more 50 days run, except for few good story lines. I feel blessed to keep hearing Raaja's songs w/o knowing which movie it appeared 'cause the tunes still reverberate after all these years. Everything else is noise. I would like to see Raaja's background scores being performed in a live stage with full orchestration. The cancelled show at Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall was the first such experiment to showcase his background score. John Williams has done few performances of his scores in US and UK.

Rajaramsgi,
Tuned in to Vijay TV around that time and to my surprise this program was playing.
Had probably commenced a few minutes ago I understand.
The second portion was shot in his prasad Deluxe recirding studio. He showed and explained the locations of the various musicians during1973 when he was assisting GKV.
When asked about other languages and how he dwelves into their nativity with ease, he gives a good reply.
Sings "Jotheyalli" the classic hit for shankarnag and from the movie Geetha, awesome two lines just with his harmonium keys. My day was made. Couldn't ask for more.
I am going to watch this again with the back up TV versions when it is made available.
I loved every bit of the interview.

Noticed GVM never took his eyes off Raja even for a second or any distraction? Same I notice Kamal doing this gesture in london press meet lyca mobile show. Shows how much they are passionate and the depth of reverence they have against this simple man.

Nicely done and executed by Vijay TV and GVM did a matured job at anchoring.

Kal rahe naa rahe (Khilte Hain Gul Yahan from Sharmeelee)... there are 2 versions, one by Kishore kumar and another by Lata Manageshkar. Raja Sir reminded me today of one of my childhood favorite and our good old kootu kudumba times......We used to have a record player at home and my uncles use to buy hindi and tamil records until the early 80s, I remember listening to Sharmeelee, Aradhana, Hum Kisise Hum Nahin etc..

Raja sir says: SD burman uses 3 phrases to repeat again and again in this song and increases Raja sir's curiosity without knowing what is going to come next. I guess you too love this one. By the way, sorry for posting a hindi song here. If it is good for Raja sir, then it is good for super duper good for us too :-) Just thought of sharing what amazed our man.

Watched Vijay TV rAjA - GVM show on both the days and felt there were
not many things an IR fan inhabiting these parts of the web
did not know.
A safe, sincere interview by GVM that made IR comfortable to open up , was evident.
Few tid bits were fascinating for me, like
1. IR improvising Kaapi raagam in Hindustani flavor during "thumbi vaa"
2. IR singing with references to the Hindi original of "rAdhaiyin nenjamE" and
how S.D.B got inspired by another "Abheri" based older song from another
movie. Now, I need to look for this one too.
3. Praising S.J for "rAsAvE .."
4. How a tragicomedy was averted after IR decided against directing
Rajini in "rAjAthi rAjA"
5. S.V.Venkatraman on a 'ottagam' , composing 'engu maRaindhAyO' of
M.S.S's Meera

Balki has three composers for his upcoming Hindi release "Ki & Ka". Which are the songs composed by Maestro? I can recognize Maestro's by the Guitar rendition for two songs.

The "High Heels" by Honey Singh is a mediocre beat and typical Bollywood dance tune. Nothing unusual here.

it is too early to say if I like Game songs or not. (at least I don't feel like I want to hear the songs one more time right away)

ondhu manjina bindhu by Ramya NSK? it is so annoying to find her singing in the same style (oru madhiri konji konjittu) soooo monotonous.

I am still curious to find out why Raja sir agreed to work in only one song+bgm for Ki & Ka. He did something similar with Lajja for which he composed Lata mangeshkar's Kaun Dagar (everyone spoke so much of this but I never understood and appreciated Raja sir + Lata's efforts) and Lajja's bgm, its theme music was well appreciated in those days.

For Lajja, Raj Kumar Santoshi approached IR at a later stage only for BGM. Not sure why IR agreed, probably the woman-centric theme appealed to him. On the director's request, he composed "Kaun Dagar" song. The song was not great, but decent, especially charanam portion. The BGM of this movie had really nice bits (and appreciated by press; I remember one online review mentioned it as "truly hollywood style BGM" for a hindi movie) and the style/sound was different from what he composed for Hey Ram. Both used Hungary symphony orchestra. Yes, many of my friends also liked theme music of Lajja.

For Ki and Ka, as per the online reports, it was T-series (they are music producers of Ki and Ka) who brought in multiple composers. Balki also agreed. It is all market driven.

Man, what a BGM he has given for this. Has he tried this genre before? Totally apt for the scenes and recording/mixing sounds very good / new age/era. Especially check from 4:58 (and guitar at 5:42). Guitar version of "Raja Kaiya Vecha" sounds fantastic.

Watched the Part 1 of "ILaiyaraja 1000" from Vijay TV today.
Seemed to have all the grandeur and pomp as a superstar's new release.
It was simply enthralling to listen to Chitra and chorus sing "ennuLE ennuLE",

"kaNNan vandhu pAdugindrAn kAlamellAm". I cannot say the same about Mano , who made a mockery of "iLamai ennum poongAtRu". SPB and guitar Prasanna just freaked out on the stage with "iLaiya nilA".Poor Napolean was given a second chance, thanks to SPB's prodding, to get his second bgm act right and he lapped up the opportunity and delivered. Bala tried unsuccessfully to mask the opportunist in him by sappakattufying for the word "payan paduthal" ofIR. I hold him squarely responsible for giving a legend like IR in an utterly gory, violent, junk of a movie for his 1000th film. I only wish IR had taken Prakash Raj's "uLavachaaru biriyANi" as his 1000th. Prakash Raj proved himself to be a true "rasika" of IR's music be not trying to hog limelight or score brownie pounts by uttering some nonsense.
How many ever times I listen to "sundari kaNNAl oru seidhi" , it NEVER fails to amaze me. That is the stuff of classics!
KJY and SJ were conspicuous by their absence.

Absolutely.
Who else can even know what is RR or BGS.

P Vasu rightly pointed out one of the traits in the recent felicitation ceremony.
He cited Chinna Thambi example and one of the crucial moments in the screenplay and how IR just stuck to his belief and let the audience fulfill the connection .
Wow, how much he has understood the medium of story telling, screenplay , narratives.
Same with Myshkins Nandhalala climax 30 mins. He carried the characters and the whole movie on his shoulders.
Prathap pothens first directorial " Meendum oru kadhal kadhai" . If we remove the soundtrack and RR that movie will look very Odd in places, Immature characters moving on the screen for 2.5 hours?
Metti- what a sound track . He outplays in few places and under plays where the daughters are on the screen emoting and living their characters (natural acting)
Aboorva sagotharargal - masterpiece RR start to finish
Geethanjali/ Idhyathai thirudathe- another master piece
How can we miss Nayakan/ Devar Magan/ Hey Ram- outstanding contribution and taking the screenplay to greater heights.
DM should have been his 4Th National award but for Blau mahendra who casted his vote the other way to encourage new talent!

For someone to just watch a silent movie , feel every frwme and encrypt that into his brain cells and within minutes start notations and by end of the day complete about 40% of the RR the same day? Who else can do it.

Except very few movies that took several days 99% of the times he has done it in 3 to 4 days and with live orchestra, no cut and paste or loops or stealing from music banks.

Hollywood musicians take months to complete one project. The greatest ones who win oscars travel with the movie from pre/ production and post production stages and take part in every aspect to know the movie , watch them in different phases of its production and keep improvising on their RR by adding or deleting the appropriate ones. For them it is only one project in that year and will spend the whole year chiseling every frame after watching it N number of times.
Our man watches once , 3rd day the movie is ready to go for prints. No corrections after that. My goodness.

It is very evident now , nobody can even come close to his achievements in this universe.

Others if they can cross 300 movies in their lifetime then that is greatly deserving on their part for having been in the field.

Amitabh Bachan has highest respect and has not seen a talent and humble person at par with IR. NI film industry has ego , cut throat competition and backbiters and ofcourse not to mention their Vices !

I happened to watch the audio launch of “Theri” where Director Mahendran spoke about his debut appearance as an Actor/ Villain in the film. The introduction video of Mahendran had Raaja's signature music and songs. I always felt that Mahendran perhaps got the best juice out of Raaja as compared to Mani Ratnam, Bharathiraaja, Balu Mahendra, and Manivannan. As soon as I watched the segment, my memories went back to earlier interviews of Mahendran, especially a recent one given to News 7 Tamil (copied below). Mahendran talks about the importance of background score and how Raaja composed for "Mullum Malarum". As many of Raaja fans know, Mahendran and Raaja shared a special symbiotic chemistry for all his movies. Mahendran’s movies had excellent background scores to lift the mood of the film in sequences where key events happen. The drum sequence in “Uthiripookal” towards the end of the movie is awesome. You cannot hear such music compositions even in award winning Hollywood films. Mahendran is one of the few Indian cinema directors who opposes song sequences in films. He has always spoken against Indian films spending lavish production costs just for song sequences which happens only in India. All of Mahendran’s movies do contain song sequences and they are always part of the story and shot to highlight Ashok Kumar’s impeccable camera angles and lighting. Majority of Mahendran’s songs are shot as the lead characters are walking (Rajini & Deepa in Jhonny), engaged in conversation (Nandu) and in action (Nenjathai Killathe). "Mullum Malarum" had dance based song sequence as part of the story.

Now roll forward to 2016 where Mahendran has debuted as a villain in “Theri”. Based on the film’s review, Mahendran’s character seem to be the only saving grace. I was curious to hear the songs from “Theri” by Prakash Kumar and my reaction was the same. Is Theri’s songs the current standard of Tamil film music? Is it the lowest point in Tamil Film music wherein composers cannot stoop to much lower level to produce an album? Mahendran explains this phenomenon in his News 7 interview and explains the dreams and expectations of Tamizh people wherein we see grandiose architecture wonders in Tamil Nadu not seen elsewhere in the world including rich music/ dance creations from the region. Tamil films have churned out world class classical and fusion music albums over the years and now we are offered the lowest point in film music. You feel agitated and angry while listening to such songs, especially the one sung by T.Rajendar. Compare this song to many Kuthu songs composed by Raaja. I would like to hear from Raaja’s fans and folks who love real music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6fjSETI5D0

One of my best song sequences from Mahendran’s movies with impeccable cinematography and tune from Maestro, are “Nandu” film songs. This could be the only full Hindi song in a Tamil film conceived by Mahendran. Raaja should have bagged couple of National Awards for Best Background scores for Mahendran’s movies. Unfortunately our Indian Govt. didn’t create such a category until 2010 when Raaja won the first Best Background score National award for “Pazhassi Raja”.

From timeless classics to marketing tools - The Hindu article April 30, 2016

http://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/film-music-business-has-changed/article8541433.ece?secpage=true&secname=entertainment

Why not create songs as an independent music album and release it separately? A film need not be hyped if it has a good story, screenplay and solid acting. Look at recent hit films released without any hype - Visaranai and Premam. Hence the shelf life of new tamil song is only 7 days. Film producers have a false notion that songs are mandatory for a film. Thank God, we have Ilayaraaja's musical hits which can sustain us for next 100 years. If you hear 2-3 Raaja's song multiple times every day, you need an entire life time to hear all his creations from 1050 films.

Songs are still important in Tamil cinema, but not the way they were

Music has always been an integral part of Kollywood commercial cinema and continues to be so. Nowadays, all major Tamil films follow a particular pattern to market their songs. First, a single track is launched at an untimely hour and it is then made to go viral. Every big film needs a hit number to create hype around it for it to be sold to distributors. Leading producer Kalaipuli Thanu after the audio launch of his Theri, was able to sell the film to distributors on his terms and conditions. Coimbatore-based distributor Cosmo Shivakumar says“The number of songs in commercial films has come down but a big film still needs a catchy number. It helps generate an opening. The audio release of Tamil films is a promotional tool, as the trade gets its first look of the film.”

Explains veteran producer Sathyajyothi Thyagarajan, “My film Thodari, starring Dhanush and directed by Prabhu Solomon, will have a big audio launch on May 8. The music by D. Imman is really good and the visuals are stunning. The hit combo of Prabhu Solomon and Imman has worked big time in the past. Once the distributors watch the songs and trailer, I’m sure the film will be sold out in all areas.”

In Hollywood and to a certain extent, in Bollywood, all major films are shown to the trade weeks before they are out for sale. But in Kollywood, there are no trade shows for star-driven movies before release, and the distributor himself sees the product only after he has purchased the film, and even then, only on the day of its release. Hence, the distributor’s choice of film is based entirely on the songs and the trailer during the audio launch.

How has Tamil music changed? Producer P. L. Thenappan says, “Tamil film music has become merely a tool to create hype around a film’s opening. Today, music directors and lyricists are dime a dozen, and are out to make at least one of their songs a chartbuster. Music is still important in commercial cinema, as it is generally thought that a hit film should have a chartbuster.”

Take, for example, the racy kuthu number ‘Jithu Jilladi’ from Theri. The song was targeted at Vijay fans, and the voice of music director Deva too helped . G. V. Prakash, who composed the song, says, “Theri is my 50th album and I took a lot of care to see that the music works well with the audience. When the album was launched, ‘Chella Kutti’ and ‘En Jeevan’ were the popular tracks. But after release, thanks to the film’s visuals, ‘Jithu Jilladi’ caught on like wildfire.”

A.R. Rahman’s music in Suriya-starrer 24 has also been slowly climbing the charts. Talking about the movie, Suriya says, “The music of 24 is one of its major highlights. In fact, the film itself took off once Rahman sir heard the narration and came on board. You will love the songs even more when you see the film.”

Another factor today is that there is a clear demarcation on what type of music sells in A, B and C centres. Ashok Parwani of Sony Music says, “. There is a huge difference between music liked by A-centres (urban Chennai and Coimbatore) and B and C-centres spread across Tamil Nadu. Take, for example, our album Rajini Murugan by D. Imman. The song ‘Yennamma ippadi panreengalaema’ worked best in cities, while in the rural B and C-centres, it was the soothing melody ‘Un mele oru kannu’ that became a bigger hit. Even the ringtone market suggests the difference in tastes between the city and rural markets.

Agrees Seenu of S Pictures, “Music What sells best in my area, which has a strong family audience, is the old Ilaiyaraaja style of melodies. Recently, Tharai Thappattai took a decent opening only because of its music. Among the new generation, D. Imman’s songs that have a rustic touch is closest to Isaignani’s music. His Romeo Juliet ran here because of its music.”

Lyricist Madhan Karky says, “Every song today has a target audience. My song ‘Google Google’ from Thuppakki worked best with the urban youth and IT crowd, while ‘Fy, Fy Kalachify’ from Pandiya Naadu was aimed at the rural listeners and it clicked. Rahman sir, however, asks me to enjoy what I’m doing rather than be bothered about target audiences.” It isn’t just Tamil films, of course. Hindi films have also been using music as a promotional tool. Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release, Fan, released with just one peppy number called ‘Jabra fan’, which sort of became an anthem during the promotions of the film. But the song was missing in the film, , in tune with the dark theme of the movie. The good news, however, is that Tamil music continues to be doing well, as the trade is clear that they will not back a project without songs. Every chartbuster produces a new music director, as both youngsters and veterans alike continue to hold sway over the listeners.

The teaser of Rajinikanth’s Kabali is out today (May 1), but grapevine is abuzz that producer Kalaipuli Thanu is planning a mega audio launch where the first visuals of the exciting new combination of Rajinikanth and Santhosh Narayanan will be unveiled.

Continuing my comments on the above article especially this line - "Among the new generation, D. Imman’s songs that have a rustic touch is closest to Isaignani’s music". I couldn't control my laughter over this observation. If you are a smart director like Sasikumar or Muthaiah, use their approach to think out of the box when shooting a song sequence. Remember "Subramaniapuram" movie using an entire song from "Kallukul Eeram" - Raaja's super duper platinum hit album. The 2013 movie "Kutti Puli" had this romance sequence beautifully directed and videographed by Muthiah. Ghibran wasn't even consulted by Muthiah when the song sequence was shown in the final production release. Could Ghibran or Imman compose such a song? It sounds so refreshing even after 35 years. The original song filmed on Rajini and Rati was shot in 1981. Just close your eyes and hear the starting sequence of guitar and humming. Ilayaraaja's music is light years ahead!

What is Amar doing? Everyone knows about his motor mouth skills. He should not be giving press conferences after National Awards were announced. The Award for Best Background score was given to the deserving musician and Amar should not have spoken about how the jury selected and compared other films. The Best Music award to M Jayachandran for "Kathirunnu Kathirunnu" is indeed shocking. There is nothing extraordinary in this song rendered by Shreya. Jayachandran deserved this award for some of his other songs. The entire National Award selection is always a controversy and I&B ministry does not want to announce all the nominees selected for the final round of awards. Raaja missed out his award for "Sri Rama Rajyam" songs because Siri Fort auditorium, where the movie was screened did not have the proper audio system and judges could not listen to the songs. This was an unfortunate incident. The Best Award went to some Bengali movie which had mediocre songs. Moreover Amar compared Oscar award giving fodder to Rahman fans. This has nothing to do with an international award given in US for English language films. I hope that Raaja's fans give the fitting response to Amar's loose comments and his statement that Tharai Thappatai songs weren't good.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/tamil/movies/news/Gangai-Amaren-lashes-out-against-Ilaiyaraaja/articleshow/52175439.cms

"It looks like the controversy over Ilaiyaraaja's rejection of National Awards is becoming bigger. The music maestro had rejected the award for the best background score for his 1000th film Thaarai Thappattai. The composer stated that there cannot be two awards in the category of music- one for background score and one for music.
Now, his brother and member of the National Awards jury Gangai Amaren seems to have taken offense to the ace musician's statement. According to an online report, Gangai Amaren is disappointed in the composer and has said that he has let down Tamilians by not accepting the award. He added that if Ilaiyaraaja had informed earlier, the award could have been given to someone else. He asked if the composer would accept only an Oscar. He also added that that the songs in Thaara Thappattai weren't up to the mark."

These questions are for Gangai Amaran based on listening to his speech (Youtube below) :
1. Since you said, a Gnani should be above everything and IR should not opt for katcheri etc. Using your same logic, he was 100% right to decline this award too. He is above all. Did you berate when Janaki refused it?

2. GA said that if IR is not going to accept the award, it could be given to somebody else. Seriously? How is this logical? The award is given because he TOPPED all. And if he doesn't accept, you give it to next one? Doesn't that belittle the next person? What if that person refuses? You give it to the next one? and keep going on? What is the point of this committee then?

3. Tharai thappattai songs were not upto the mark? GA referred to Jingidi song and thakida thakida from TA. Both are based on the same raga. Because of that you deny an award? Isn't it a known fact that one can churn out the same music again and again using the same set? IR has been doing this for 3-4 decades and still remained on the top. What does that tell you? People accept him but you DIDN'T. People matter and not your personal opinion. So you are ok, if one steals from western, gets fame, and then hops onto international awards? How is this right?

4. Lastly, being in the committee, it is a conflict of interest on commenting about this. This is a biased opinion. With such bias, how can you confirm (with clear conscience) that you will work neutral in future? What if IR's BGM comes up again? You have already disrupted the functioning of the committee.

About Julian Karikalan meeting IR for LALO (love and love only) music:

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-metroplus/taking-the-musical-route/article8577156.ece

"Like many growing up on a staple diet of Tamil film music in the 1980s, Julian Karikalan is a big fan of composer Ilaiyaraaja. So, when he completed work on his English film, Love and Love Only , Julian wanted to rope in the maestro to compose music.

But it wasn’t going to be easy. That’s why Australia-based Julian took a different route rather than the time-tested one.

He completed a rough cut of the film and then came to Chennai to meet the composer. Ilaiyaraaja watched the entire film, featuring Rohit Kalia and Georgia Nicholas in lead roles, without reacting. And at the end of it, he just smiled.

“He asked me to wait outside,” recalls Julian. The waiting — for more than a couple of hours — made the filmmaker terribly anxious, but there was little he could do but wait.

And then, Ilaiyaraaja called him inside, and what he spoke, slowly and clearly, is something Julian will remember for the rest of his life.

“Your approach is very different,” the composer told Julian, “From the making, the writing, to the distribution plan, you have a different approach to everything. If it were the usual kind of film, I would just do it immediately. But for this, I don’t know what music I should give; I just know that it should be very special. I will call you as soon as an idea strikes me. ”

The filmmaker felt blessed hearing that, and the wait continued. Very soon, he was called and a few sessions later, he had got what he wanted… 21 tracks!

And all that in less than a week. Julian’s admiration for the composer has increased many times after the musical sessions. “Without his music, my film wouldn’t have had the viewing experience it has now,” he says.

There are two songs in the film (the song ‘Am I in Love’, performed by Rachael Leahcar, was released online) and it thrills Julian no end that Ilaiyaaraja chose to devote time for this project.

“Once I saw the edited film, I knew I had to go to him. It was at that same time I saw a YouTube video of him saying that he was willing to support deserving newcomers. I felt he was speaking to me personally.”

The film, which talks about the realities of student life in Australia, is slated for release soon. “Once people in India are familiar with the project, I wish to do a multiplex-only limited release and then explore the paid online market,” he says."

thanks,

Krishnan

Agni Natchatram to be remade (again) in hindi by Bejoy Nambiar (director of Wazir hindi movie).

"...One of the highlights of Agni Natchathiram was the music by Ilaiyaraja which was recreated note-by-note by Anand-Milind in Vansh. Apparently, Bejoy will also revisit the original score by Ilaiyaraja in his version of Mani’s melodrama..."

I am sure the songs would turn out great, Kamal gets the best work done out his fellow technicians. My personal problem here is Ramya's voice, I am too shallow to like her songs, not even one impressed me.

I agree. But I don't think one should get slandered and keep quiet. Hence thought media would atleast question GA back on his claims.
Very sad for GA to voice his opinions like this, and it is even worse because he is a brother.

No wonder, IR gets temperamental in public. Most likely he is tired of people tossing out after they reached the top. Many actors, producers, singers, directors are on the list.
No gratitude at all.

The photo on this page looks like a bedroom, does this means Raja sir has his own room there at Ramanashramam? I never been to the ashram, and it don't look like this room is being used by any pilgrim there.. just curious to know if this Raja sir's room at his home/ashramam/studio?

Wonderful lines and kinda a quick short line up for the memory lanes. Atleast he was able to trigger many euphoric thoughts for us. Next few weeks we have several things to rekindle and ponder about. Thanks BR.

Wishes to our Maestro for a long, long, peaceful life and his never ending zeal for producing melodious tunes. Coincidentally it's also Ratnam's 60th birthday. Hindu has a great article titled "Eclipsed Gems from Raaja and Ratnam". As I always comment, these songs are Gold Standard. We are all lucky to keep hearing these golden nuggets because of their incredible combination.

http://www.thehindu.com/features/cinema/not-so-well-known-songs-the-ilayaraja-and-mani-ratnam-combine-have-given-us/article8682410.ece?secpage=true&secname=entertainment

To be honest, I like this song from Ratnam's first Tamil movie. It's the raw voice of Maestro, the organ/ violin interludes, the charming village cinematography and the carefree attitude of Murali in this song sequence. Raaja must have composed this tune as soon as Ratnam described the very first opening scene in his first Tamil adventure and the first sequence in his shooting.

Amma kanakku is a album i won't call average. It is a album strongly intended for a situation based film and the scope based on dreams, hardship and mother-daughter emotions already shows in the songs. Based on the song length, probably only 2 count as full-term songs and the rest will appear in bits and pieces.

Considering that, Unakkum enakkum is a powerful melody with soothing guitar-ish background and wonderful interludes. You can feel the effect of "dreams" in the interludes. For the umpteenth time, i can't believe that this 73 year old man can compose something so fresh and innovative at this stage. I am listening to the song again to understand the interludes. Brilliante!

That's what I thought too and that's where the problem is.
Sometimes, we can feel there is not much effort in some of the albums.
Maybe the director didn't quite extract the right tunes and/or story was weak that it didn't inspire IR.
Only he knows.
I am disappointed for waiting this long and my wait is continuing for the next album. Hope it works out.

ராஜா சார் என்கிற பாடத்தின் சுருக்கம் இது தான்: : "stand out - to be outstanding".

"Panchu" Arunachalam, the writer who gave Raja his first big break with "Annakili", is no more. RIP "Panchu". "Panchu" himself was a good lyricist and remained a Raja loyalist till the very end (only his last few movies had music by Yuvan). Raja had a lot of respect for "Panchu" as well.

I was watching the video where Raaja was at Thiru Panju Arunachalam's funeral and his silence amidst all the noise there. I was thinking, what if Thiru Panju hadn't given that opportunity to a 21 year old music assistant? Gangai Amaran rightly summed up saying that the entire Raaja family wouldn't exist if Thiru Panju hadn't pushed the young boy to compose music for a film. It seems like Thiru Panju was born in this world to give the musical gift "Ilayaraaja" to everyone. As we all know and acknowledged by Raaja himself, Annakili was not the first film that Raaja had composed full music. He had composed music for few films back in 1974-75 time frame while working as an assistant to GKV. Thiru Panju's association with Raaja started in 1974 and the next year he offered the composing role to him. Gangai Amaran had mentioned in few interviews that Tamil Film Producers and Directors were against a 21 year boy doing music direction for a movie. Listen to Raaja's experience on how the first humming in the song was created. It is mind blowing to think that this boy had so much creativity and musical nuances back in 1974. Annakili was a path-breaking and trendsetting film in Tamil language. After this the industry began filming movies in full outdoor and Raaja started conquering the hearts of people. The entire movie was shot in a beautiful village "Thengumarahada" on the banks of River Moyar in Nilgiris District. The first song video-graphed on Sujatha singing "Annakili Unna Theduthe" was on the Moyar river banks.

Thiru Panju's brother was the Producer of the movie and they took a big risk to introduce a young boy as a composer. This history later repeated in Tamil film industry. It was rumored that Raaja wanted LR Eshwari to sing the first or second song. Apparently, LRE refused to sing for a young MD and that too for the first time. As a result, Raaja hasn't used Eshwari for any songs till date. Raaja then requested S Janaki to render the first song during rehearsal. It was S Janaki's husband who insisted that she should sing for a young MD and encourage the boy in his future endeavors. After that first song, S Janaki and Raaja went to break all records to establish one of the greatest musical collaborations in the entire world. No one has kept accurate account of the number of LP records, cassettes, MP3 (legal and illegal downloads) sales of their musical productions as of date. We Indians are bad at keeping accounts and rest of the world doesn't know about Raaja's numerous Platinum albums. Thiru Panju still lives within every Raaja fan and may his soul be born again to create another music genius in coming years. Even though Thiru Panju was an accomplished artist, he is still remembered and written as the person who introduced a 21 year old boy to TFM.

Listen to Raaja's experience on how the first song in Annakili was conceived and produced.

This man can churn out such a lilting tune with so much energy any time. I think the script is the key for him to get excited. we saw that happen with "Pazhassiraja", "Guru", Kaalapaani and many more complete albums. He is director independent creator I guess? Else how come he can re create magic in every note, time and time again.

he is a real phenomenon and has real gift from divine connections !

Thanks Krishnan. I think Vijay Yesudas's voice sounds a bit weak for this song (romba flataa irukku). Chorus/Choir is great though.

I am not comparing Raja sir with anyone, but we have to admit that Rahman somehow gets to work with more rare voices compared to others. (I was impressed when Rahman chose sufi singers Nooran Sisters for a song in highway, something of this sort is what I am looking for)

Only after you said, I began to think maybe somebody may have done it different. But then, if you employ people like Shanker Mahadevan, song takes a different turn.

I feel VV's voice perfectly fits this song. Not a nail-grinding voice, but smooth, eloquent voice that mimics the green landscapes of Kerala and pleasing to ears.

He sounds almost like Yesudoss.

(Yes, ARR's selections are creative but well has gone dry for a while now. Occasional sparks doesn't live long. IR has stood on top for atleast 4 decades in cine industry, a feat that nobody will achieve. Hope I am not bringing another IR/ARR debate. I don't intend to at all)

He sang in a different tone.
To me, IR clearly shows signs of aging (or maybe the modulation of song?). Many instances, his voice sounds wavering like how it happened for Janaki, Yesudoss etc.

I dont think so. are you closely watching all his recent renditions?

Hi
Can you share the video or audio please. I have tried everywhere, couldn't find it. Even though I agree 100 percent with you, that he still has the same voice no point that we try to prove it to anyone. One thing for sure Raja sir sung that song particularly that way, and its awesome.

Kodumai!!!!!

As I was enjoying the clip, right at 5:52 - IR scolded his tabla player for starting out wrong (in public!!!).
Song was more on a philosophical note, but the manner he dealt with a mistake isn't.
Rather than treating it lightly, correcting it and move on (infact, he could have made a comedy or something to distract the public from knowing the mistake) - he chose the wrong path.

Nobody is perfect in this world. It isn't a surgery that led to kill a patient by mistake!
I literally stopped watching few seconds after that.

Sad!!!

Ofcourse, he reached heights!! but is it necessary to chose this path (insulting others?) and reach it?. Nobody is perfect in this world. Mistakes do happen.

Using your same own logic (which I don't agree with), like how IR and you seems to think that insulting others is ok to achieve greatness, I am using the same green ink and stamp such behaviors as inappropriate. So it gets equal. Are you a musician, by any chance? Who determines that musicians (and not any other professionals) deserve this special trait?

Nobody said, he should 'not' correct the tabla player. But not in a demeaning tone!. It is like parents, scolding their own kids in public as idiots for any mistakes. One got to remember that they were kids themselves at some point in their life time. If every employer follows such things in their workplace towards their employees, very soon he will go bankrupt!. Insulting others doesn't help improvement but instills fear and vexation.

IR is a music genius. Period. Nobody else can replace him.
But that doesn't have to come with perks that nobody (except some because I got to include people who like such behaviours) likes in the society.

Having crossed many years of life, I can say that the tabla player would have sat on pin cushion for rest of the concert. Poor chap!!.

Hi Dochu

you have said nobody is perfect in the world , so how come you can't accept Raja sir can't make mistake. Why there is few always try to find something . We have said things and done thinks we shouldn't have , maybe you are different .
He has all the rights , not because he employed them ,but they are together for all these time . They have this relationship , may be that's the way they speak . Still he said sorry by putting his hand up end of the song.
He was so into the song , so emotional , people tend to make mistake heat of the movement . Even when we have singing season with friends , we get upset when someone make mistake.
Why are you making excuses for the tabla player but why can't you do that to him... I bet you haven't noticed that he put his hand up.

Ilayathasan/VR - Ofcourse, nobody is perfect in this world, as I said before. Hence there should some sort of leniency to certain degree. To me, that action was quite unwarranted. I wish I could overlook such a mistake, but this isn't an isolated incident. There is a history.

Ofcourse, we all do make mistakes. It takes a lot to apologize.

I rechecked the video to the end. I didn't see any 'hand gestures' that seems to be in apologetic tone. Hope tabla player was able to 'convince himself' that there was an apology towards the end of the song.

On a related note -
In psychology, there is a term called 'halo effect'. When somebody likes (adores/worships) say celebrities, friends etc they tend to ignore any faults in them.

I am as much as a hardcore fan like others. I don't even listen to other MD's songs (exception MSV). But some things I can't overlook. "Netri kannai thirapinaum kutram kutramey" especially when there is repetition.

"....I didn't see any 'hand gestures' that seems to be in apologetic tone..."

To be precise watch repeat watch

1. first interlude or something...IR was upset he cautions the tabla player (see his face)
2. the yelling .. not warranted it is a outburst for a reason under "emotional conditions" how he sang the lyrics and how crowd got the point..probably musicians got involved as well for that miss
3. exactly @7:00 he gestures the hand to complete the song
4. exactly @7:01 he turns shows angry face to the tabla player for the miss which inturn made him to outburst
5. exactly @7:02 - 7:04 ( he raises his hand towards the tabla player and that is apology )
6. 7:05-7:06 he folds his hand towards audience

I think all this stuff happened under emotional conditions where audiience, IR, musicians themselve got involved and misses happen

No one is saint including IR and we tend to use foul language under ideal conditions triggering that so that 7:02- 7:04 is the key that "he understood his mistake"

Kobam irukum idathil than kunam irukum so to add noone knows what happened offline like IR would have talked to that tabla player for his outburst
Its all part of package.

Hi Dochu
You can see it from Ifran's reply that, Raja made that gesture (7:04). Thank you Ifran.
So it's up to you wether you want to accept he apologised or not... I don't know what is the condition in psychology,,, horn affect??? Just kidding. It is not my Intention, that to argue or point a finger at you.
About halo affect thing , you are entitled to your own opinion. But I never call my self a fan , In fact I feel it's a insult.( pls don't look for names). I am indebted to Raja sir , so he is like one of my close relative. In real life if one of them make mistake I used to criticise them, now try to understand it then tell discuss with them( may be the age).
About repeatedly making mistake? maybe he has . The many of them entirely not his faults. Also many us have repeated our mistake in our life. Maybe you have reached the heights that we are trying get to.
In west, people accept the real geniuses for their creativity or for their thought. I can give example for almost all of them.. take Van Gagh. Then again it's up to the individuals to accept wether Raja sir is great genius or not.
Only thing I can't understand , that most people in public eyes India are frauds, womaniser , drunks and more. Why nobody ever talk about them..... why

@irfan123, Ilayathasan:
No worries.
How IR pointed out the mistake of tabla player (for not starting right on the cue), I pointed his mistake for handling the musician erratically.
As I keep saying, we are all bound to get emotional, etc and make mistakes. Whatever it is, some things (mistakes) will get erased as we age and gather experience in life.
What we did (mistakes) as kids, don't get repeated because we 'learnt' from it.

IR for his age, wisdom and experience, this definetely wouldn't be the first encounter.

My personal wish was that he could take it light and not censure the tabla player to that extent. Whatever the hand gestures (7:04) seemed to be taken as an apology, could very well be done it more mature and differently too, IMHO.

We all tried giving reasons that musicians have the right to such eccentricities, situations made him do it etc.

But at the end of the day, personally I think it would be a great selfless act to be just kind and accepting person.

Whether you believe it or not, whenever there is an interview or press meeting with IR, people who adores him for sure will be nervous while the media will be waiting for some juicy comments to make a media sensation. IMHO, these things could be controlled.

Doesn't that sound hypocritical?

See as much as you overlook his mistakes and justify to, using the same logic, your reasoning falls quite flat. Because you are preaching too. I am able to note the sarcasm in your tone.

It takes a whole lot of reasoning, thinking and maturation to overcome challenges and remain calm in life. Which I don't think we will ever master until our death. I am as much as imperfect like anybody else and trying to control my animal urges.

Hope you are not taking any of this personally and my intention isn't so either.

Man!!!that's quite a pessimistic way to look at everybody. If you keep wearing dark glasses all the time, statistically you are bound to miss out on good/geniune things too.
FOrtunately, it isn't my problem but yours to deal with.
Indirectly hinting (AGAIN!) with a sarcastic comment doesn't help your case at all. I clearly mentioned that I was just expressing my way, and you went around beating the bush.

You talked about who are we to preach others, geniuses have their own quirky ways, etc but you did the exact opposite of preaching etc. And I called out this action as being hypocritical. You cannot hold different set of standards for yourself and others.

Bottomline - no matter how much ever we justify erratic actions of anyone (against norms of a social living), it gets censured. History has repeatedly shown.

Who would think this is a utopian world? Its mostly Dog eat dog world. How can one justify their own bad behaviour because they were treated bad once by others? If everybody follows that principle, then good things will cease to exist.

I would NOT definetely call anyone a saint. I am yet to come across a saint. He has portrayed him to be more spiritually inclined, hence public's expectations for him to stand above the rest is quite ginormous. And erractic actions undermines the credibility.

Look at the video clip of famous bleep song controversy.
I am not justifying the reporter's action. It was an inappropriate question at an inappropriate time. However, he did not ask IR how to treat perivascular disease with latest drug. It was well within the realms of his territory (cine music). Maybe the common expectation would be to answer with a simple, 'no comment' or 'inappropriate question'. Instead IR, questioned the reporter.....

"Unaku modhalla enkitta pesa thagudhi iruka nu...."

I got confused. Now what qualifications does a reporter need to ask celebrities?

Anyway, I shall stop my arguments with this because.......majority of public doesn't accept it. It was quite evident from the media reports.

Dochu:

I have followed you for years and you have been generally supportive of IR.

I have a slightly different take on both the events. Regarding the one with the reporter, you have to consider the context. IR seemed genuinely concerned about people affected with the floods - as exhibited by his delivering food by boat and dropping of 1000s of blankets etc. The reporter uses one of his flood related visits for his question whereas IR stops to answer reporters impromtu to answer flood related questions. Even then IR first tells the reporter that this is not the place for such questions and it is when the reporter aggressively pursues, IR uses those words. In the immediate context of the suffering he has seen in the floods, the repeated aggressive questioning regarding a crass issue that IR had no relation to was the trigger and you will have to have more contempt for the insensitive qualities of the reporter than IR. I do.

Regarding his reaction to the Tabla player in the video, you can see that IR has been showing his displeasure right from the start of the song as something was not right and looks like signalling him to be in synch. However, when he continues to be not in sync is when IR uses those words. The one thing we all know about IR is his pure dedication to music and he has demonstrated this over all these years that in that quest of perfection to music, he has alienated many. From what I have seen in the two concerts in NJ I visited, he really cares about the music that they are performing and wants to not shortchange the paying audience. How may other troupes, practice for a month before engaging on a tour like this. What I saw in these concerts was even when Mano mispronounces a word, IR corrects him as he cares about perfection. Imagine, it would be easier for to not care and deliver songs with blemishes and be the crowd pleaser. But this is his DNA - being genuine to his art that he has dedicated himself to. The other hat I saw in the concert was the genuine affection his team had for him. Also not talked about much is when his singers hit the difficult notes correctly or when his orchestra plays a complex piece well, he looks at them and applauds in admiration and turns to the crowds to signal to them the beauty of what they did.

I recently heard from a friend of mine who had gone to an Anirudh concert in Toronto that most of the music was piped in and there was a lot of lip synching that went on. It is these guys who are celebrated these days.

While there is a lot of bad things people say about IR, not many talk about the fact of his reverence to real musical genius be it MSV, C Ramachandra, SDBurman, Dr. Balamurali Krishna, TVG, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer etc. His loyalty to Panchu Arunachalam until PA's last days. You also see the members of his orchestra including the sons of past music directors like Govardhan and Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan (both the sons excel in their fields). He also had music director Dakshinamoorthy as the one who would instruct the singers before his recording. I see IR as a man who respects genuine talent and is really loyal but someone who in his own way protests and stands up against pretense and what he perceives as authoritative (in movies, a person with those traits would be a superstar).

For me, I genuinely admire IR not just for his music but for his whole being. (I was so proud when my wife, who is a fan of IR music but a crazy IR fan like me, said when we at the recent concert in NJ that she just wants to be in his presence because there something divine about IR and she hopes that some of those vibrations from his presence could be a blessing).

Anyway my objective is not to change your mind but to provide you my take based on my perceptions of the context surrounding the situations. I feel that in general IR does not get the respect he deserves from the media and characterizations of him and I would not be surprised that there may be vested interests fueling that. My hope is that we do not succumb to that and consider the overall context.

I have accepted him as a music genius. Period.
With a gross mistake, I would have done more than a hand gesture.

Most of the fans know this history. Which super hit Tamil movie was created just to showcase 7 songs? Raaja had composed 7 songs and insisted that all songs should be filmed in a single album and movie. A Director took up the challenge to write a story to use all 7 songs in one album. All the songs became super-duper, platinum hit albums rendered in almost all concerts, competitions and award functions for past 35 years. One playback singer recorded three songs for this album and was recorded in one day in morning, afternoon and evening sessions with full musical score. The singer mentioned this during Raaja's London O2 Arena concert in 2013. This song still remain the Gold standard for this singer in Tamil and never fails to sing at any concert. This week's Country Music Awards 50th Anniversary function held in Nashville, USA, the Album of the Year winner required several months to get the base tune and lyrics synced before recording the songs. 35 years ago we had Platinum hits created, composed, written, orchestrated and recorded with full accompaniments in one day by a Composer the western world hardly knew. What a phenomenon...

I am not surprised by Raaja's decision to send a legal notice to SPB50 concert tour of US. Last week I happened to attend SPB50 concert where SP Charan, Chitra, Sailaja and SPB rendered several songs from Ilayaraaja, Rahman, MSV and Vidyasagar compositions. Not even once did SPB or Charan mention or acknowledge the composer's or lyricist's names. SPB made sure that when Charan sang "Agaram Ippo" song from the movie "Sigaram" he acknowledged that he was the composer of the movie and KJY sang the song. Rahman has sent similar notices to many concert groups and event organizers to get proper copyright authorization before playing his songs.

Unfortunately, India has weak copyright laws and rights for media owners. In US and UK, the songs/ albums are copyright owned by label owners like Sony and Universal. Raaja tried to enforce this many years ago when he owned Echo Records. There were big fights with AVM over audio rights of Raaja's platinum hits which were released by AVM. I believe AGI now owns all albums released after year 2000. SPB should have received copyright authorization from all album/ song owners before he embarked on a world tour. A song is a team work of film director, lyricist, composer and playback singer. Everyone should get compensated for the profits that they get. MSV had financial trouble after his son lost money in several bad movie productions. MSV did not get royalty payments for all his super duper hit songs. There are other Indian music directors who died as a pauper including RD Burman and Chandrabose. They never set up proper copyright enforcement to get royalties for their songs. All the TV music competitions and concerts in India who freely render film songs never pay any royalty to the owners and composers. Raaja's decision is to be welcomed and it has taken so many years for him to enforce it. SPB50's US concert without Raaja's songs will be similar to having Sambhar without Paripu. He still has five US cities to cover for next four weeks. Yesterday he completed San Jose concert - not sure whether it's Tamil or Telugu. I agree with Rajaram that it's a big disappointment for Raaja's fans. I was on cloud nine listening to SPB rendering some of Raaja's hits.

Raaja's legal notice to SPB50 concert has kicked off a big social media ruckus. Just now SPB has apologized to his fans in his Facebook page to not make this a big issue with Ilayaraaja. It appears that yesterday SPB50 Telugu concert in San Jose did not have any Raaja's songs. Today is Tamil concert of SPB50 in San Jose. Why did SPB not think of getting copyright permission from Raaja before starting a global tour? All these years crores of people have illegally downloaded Raaja's songs without paying any money. Under international copyright law, the creator(s) of the song including Lyricist, Composer and singer should get royalty whenever the media is rendered in any concert, played in radio/ TV or sung in a public performance. I feel bad that this happened while SPB50 US tour is just starting.

http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/singers-are-minting-money-composer-doesn-t-get-1-rupee-ilaiyaraaja-s-consultant-tnm-58868

Singers are minting money, composer doesn’t get 1 rupee’: Ilaiyaraaja’s consultant to TNM
Ilayaraja is right to ask for royalty. Experts explain why.

Music director Ilaiyaraaja’s decision to send singers SP Balasubrahmanyam (SPB), Chitra and Charan legal notices over performing his compositions has taken many by surprise. While SPB took to Facebook to say that he did not get any “feelers” from the music composer when his SPB50 tour in America began and that he is “ignorant” of the law, many others wondered if there was more to the legal notice.

Speaking to The News Minute, Ilaiyaraaja’s copyrights consultant E Pradeep Kumar says, “People have misunderstood the issue. Ilaiyaraaja has given two press meets in the last few years telling people not to perform his songs unless they get permission from him and pay royalty. It is not anything new. SPB has created a situation where a legal notice had to be sent.”

Pradeep argues that the famed music director has devoted over 35 years of his life in composing pieces and the royalties that he deserves to receive are not being paid. He, however, adds. “We are not compelling orchestras or musicians who are surviving on Ilaiyaraaja’s music to pay up royalties. We are only concentrating on people who are earning lakhs or crores by using his creations. SPB is not doing charity shows. They are minting money and the composer doesn’t get 1 rupee. It his work and creation.”

With Ilaiyaraaja holding the copyright to many of his songs, Pradeep observes that SPB should have taken the music director’s permission prior to commencing his SPB50 tour, which kicked off in Toronto last August. “They are friends. He could have spoken to Ilaiyaraaja and gotten rights to perform.”

He also points out that the composer never seeks a percentage of the revenue generated from the shows. “There is flexibility. We are saying you tell us how much you want to pay. You have to ask for permission and pay a royalty. But no one is willing to pay even 1 rupee. People want to utilise him free of cost,” says Ilaiyaraaja’s copyright consultant.

In 2015, the music maestro had warned radio stations and television channels of legal action if they played his songs without his consent.

“Only I hold the right to all my songs. The agreements that I signed back in the day were valid only for five years. Since they were not renewed and no royalties have been paid, all agreements stand void,” Ilaiyaraaja said in 2015. He had also gone on to say that he would share the royalties he received from these broadcasters with the film producer, singers and lyricists.

Weighing in on the legal tussle, Swaroop Mamidipudi, an advocate practicing in copyright law says, “Ilaiyaraaja is right to ask the SPB for royalty, presuming he owns the musical work. The singer doesn’t have the copyright. Under law, he should get the composer’s permission, pay royalty and then perform.”

Swaroop explains that there are two copyrights – one for the musical work and another for sound recording. “When a person composes a work, he owns the piece of music. And when it is recorded, the music producer owns the recording,” he points out. When it comes to live performances, however, consent is required from the composer rather than the music label.

A singer, who wished to remain anonymous, told TNM that it is normal practice for organisers to seek permission from composers for their musical works before a concert. “Every time a concert is organised, the event organiser is supposed to take a list of songs. Also, I think every channel, when they organise a reality show, when these kids sing a song, they take a list. They pay a royalty. It’s a small fee they have to pay for all these songs and they pay. It’s the same with radio stations. They pay a certain amount to audio labels or to composers, who every holds the copyright or Intellectual Property for the song,” the singer said.

The singer points out that unlike many music composers in India, AR Rahman owns the complete Intellectual Property to his compositions, allowing him to reproduce his musical works in different languages. But notes that music directors like AR Rahman are a rarity in India.

“The system has always been that a composer creates the tunes and gives it to the audio label, for lock, stock and perpetuity, and all these contracts come into place. A composer then isn’t in a position to reuse his own composition. It actually puts him in a disadvantage because he has signed it off to the audio label and he cannot even use his own compositions on stage. So, technically an audio label can sue a music director if he performs it on stage. Which is why you see composers like Shankar Mahadevan - even if they have sung for others, they don’t pick up those songs and sing it on stage. It is a humongous problem,” observes the singer.

Swaroop points out that in that the 1970s and the 1980s music producers would buy the musical copyright from composers. Having begun his career in the late 1970s, Ilaiyaraaja never received royalties being unaware of his rights. “It is only recently that he gained knowledge about his musical copyright,” says a source close to Ilaiyaraaja.

Gangai Amaran's fiery attack on Raaja once again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVT5n5DvbaQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0zKWtQW5-Y

Gangai Amaran has no clue on how music copyright is handled. He should talk to Rahman or other composers from Hindi film world on music royalty. No one knows the real reason behind this legal notice to SPB50 organizers. SP Charan is the key person to organize this world tour and Charan had several court cases and arrest warrants against non-payment of money as movie producer. This world concert was organized to generate some income. There appears to be a deep rooted problem behind this legal notice from Raaja. As Rajaram mentioned, music lovers will have to weigh their options on how to treat this problem between SPB and Ilayaraaja.

This is such a shocker.... I cant even fathom this. The internet is gone to town with this and as usual there will be fans from both sides defending each of the favorites. But really?? can anyone claim victory at the end of the day?? really??. Whoever comes out victorious out of this.. be it Raaja or SPB... Can any fan be happy about this? Many a time, I was advised by people to look at Raaja the musician and not Raaja the man. His personal side is not my business. But now it has hit us home. Why now Raaja? Why to SPB? And why is the middle of his 50th year tour? Why couldnt you both talk it out before he went on tour? He is/was your friend for christ sake!! Remember the times you enthralled us ... Werent you fully aware of the fallout of sending a legal notice?? My heart breaks at this... Gone is a friendship that made us sleep, made us fall in love, supported us in hard times... yes we may not mean much to your decision Raaja... but please dont tell us that Music for you comes from God and not yours... its all yours and you want a price for that .... Legally you have all the rights to do this... but morally you failed as a friend!. Enjoy the money and the fallout from this!. At the end of the day we cant go anywhere or have any choice but to listen to your music, but remember the hearts that you have let down today ! ....

Are you really going make this into an Andhra vs Tamil thing? Pathetic !! . This is about two souls who are/were dear to each other and more dearer to millions of fans as a couple... there are a lot of fans like me who feel that a family has been broken and knowing Raaja, it may never get back together. Raaja and SPB are friends, family and more... the sheer joy of them seeing together and SPB giving anecdotes and praise to Raaja is a sight to behold... and this has been broken for what??? Money/ legality? Legally yes!, he has every right to ask for royalty (I hope he paid the lyric writers when he toured the US). And he can demand the FM music channels for loyalty or even TV channels. I am sad because of the timing.. His friend that grew up with him and went through all the highs and lows of life with him is in his 50 year celebrations and it is a moment of pride and achievement for him. Instead of celebrating the occasion for him, with him, he demands royalty for his songs to be sung on stage?? ... Is this a time for this? Can he not wait and tell SPB when he gets back how he felt about this? Was everything a fake then? Does he not know that we fans are the ultimate losers at the end of this episode, no matter who wins..... This is just not right no matter how you spin this legally.... Raaja may win this battle , but he will never have an idea how many fans he left with a bitter taste....

There is no politics at play here and let's leave it that. There are genuinely concerned fans of both that are shocked by the current situation . You cannot simple seperate these two. If you love spb, you love raaja as well. Just like one cannot love raaja and not love Janaki. I am no one to dictate how these two should have handled things but what I can say with utmost humility is that this is simply not the way . What a sad few days that this has been even though it has nothing to do with my life. That's how this decision has affected music lovers or raaja devotees. Splitting up with vairamuthu was a professional decision which we were totally fine with, but this one with a friend of more than 40 years may even hurt us more than two involved.

Folks, let's not get emotional and try to attack Raaja or SPB regarding this issue. Ilayaraaja has brought to light a very important legal issue regarding film music albums. The legal parties, movie producers, composers, singers and lyricists all agree that the copyright (IPRS) issue in India should be straightened out. It's a known fact that music artists in India especially in film industry are paid very less as compared to Western artists. Ilayaraaja should have been the richest music composer in the world for having composed record number of albums than any one else, but the truth is different. Rahman was one of the first composers to strictly enforce IPRS royalty payment starting from his first film Roja. If I am right, Lahari records owns copyright for most of Ratnam's films and those guys have received payment from SPB and numerous others who have performed Rahman's songs in big concerts. Just two days ago, Bahubali 2 Telugu and Tamil music rights was sold to Lahari for Rs. 4.5 crores which is the highest amount paid in Indian film industry. Bahubali 1 audio rights was sold for Rs. 22.20 crores. Karan Johar's Dharma Productions own audio rights for Hindi version. Tulasiram Naidu of Lahari paid Rs.75 Lakhs in 1992 for Dhalapathi audio rights. SPB hardly sings "Sundari Kanaal" song in any international concert. Raaja is trying to get a legal framework in place for all future artists (playback singers, lyricists, music organizers and instrument players).

Everyone knows that Rahman's father Shekhar died without much money to spare and his illness drove the family to poverty. Shekhar was the main music organizer for all Malayalam movie recordings in Madras. He was never paid his full dues for all the hard work that he did. Rahman's family should be given royalty for all Malayalam songs that Shekhar arranged to compose for Music Directors. Unfortunately IPRS has no such provision and organizers and singers don't get any royalty. This is the legal case that Raaja filed two years ago with Madras High court to seek royalty for all players involved in music album production. SPB and Charan should have sought Raaja's advice or legal opinion before starting a global tour. Each event in US is ticketed and prices start from $35 to $250 for SPB50 concert. All US concerts for SPB50 are held in medium sized sports arena to reduce staging fees. SPB is fully aware of legal ramifications of singing Raaja's songs in an international concert series. He has definitely paid royalty for all Rahman songs which he sings though he picks only 2-3 songs in every concert. People are blaming Karthik Raaja and Charan for this problem which is not entirely true. Also SPB should start acknowledging the composer, director and lyricist whenever he sings a song. SPB never mentions the creator of songs. He never mentioned Rahman, Raaja, Vidyasagar or MSV during his US concerts. He made sure that his own composition for KB's film "Sigaram" was mentioned. When KJY50 function was conducted in Kochi in 2012, the organizers made sure that Music Director, Lyricist, Director and Year of release of the album was prominently displayed in the projection screen. Moreover KJY invited all composers to his 50th anniversary function. SPB50 function did not have such arrangement.

Rajsekar,
I am sorry you started out saying lets not attaqch Raaja and SPB regarding this issue and by the end of your post, you inadvertantly put the blame on SPB for this issue!.Let us be very clear on this.
Is Raaja justified in taking a stand on royalty?
Absolutely Yes!
Is SPB and the organizers at fault for not taking permissions from Raaja before the tour?
Absolutely Yes!

Does Raaja's legal action towards his friend SPB in the middle of this 50th year, without even talking to him, justified?
Absolutely Not.

Raaja's royalty issue happened 2 years ago and various other concerts of SPB has happened in those two years. Then suddenly this. Tell me there is more than the royalty issue at work here.

For all those needing a clarity on the royalty issue, here is a few pointers on how it works in india.
For songs:
Copy write : 50% Producer/25% Music director/ 25% Lyricist. Things in India changed in 2012 with singers demanding a portion of the copywrite.
For back ground score:
Belongs to the author : (In this case the music director)

Raaja tried to get copywrite waived off from the producers and lyric writers for 600 of his films. The producers had sold the rights to the music companies. That is why this is still in court litigation. Raaja currently cannot prove that he holds all rights to the movies he composed. That is why he doesnt get all the money from FM channels/ Mobile downloads/Television songs... He gets his due of the 25% from IPRS which he claimed that they were only paying him 13 lakhs a year and he wanted people to pay him directly. But raaja doesnt want money from people who cannot afford to pay. This makes things very complicated. He only wants money from people who make a lot of money from this. This is very hard to implement with picking and choosing. Tracking the exact amount of raaja songs sung in light music events or FM channels in india will take light years to track down. So IPRS probably will work on getting a fixed amount and go after the big concerts.

Anyways there is nothing much to prod now.. the damage is done by both ... one feigning ignorance to the law.. and the other one who felt that friendship can go to hell... and here we are trying to lick our wounds and say one day things will be ok.

Life will continue... When Vairamuthu split with Raaja, fans were upset and both veterans continued their separate journey. During the peak period of Vairamuthu, Vaali did not have much work and he was left out by Raaja. After the split, Vaali rose to prominence. Same is true with Raaja and Bharathiraja and Ratnam. Both directors continued their journey with other composers. MSV fans were upset that KJY was being increasingly used in place of TMS during MGR days. When Raaja started in 1976, SPB and Malaysia Vasudevan took over the male vocal part. Same is true when MSV and Ramamoorthy split. As Ilayaraaja often quotes "Anything is possible in cinema world". It's literally true. Friends can become strangers and enemies can join together in cinema. Raaja had a fallout with KB over "Puthu Puthu Arthangal" release where KB wanted to release the movie before background score was 100% complete due to 1989 Deepavali rush. This fight led to Balachandar not choosing Raaja for his next directorial film "Azhagan" and in his own production film "Roja". The next split was between Raaja and Rajni at commercial level though they remain as personal friends. Raaja will never compose music for Rajni's films. Mano was introduced to step into SPB's role since SPB became increasingly busy with Telugu movie dubbing and playback songs. Raaja knew how to use everyone's voice be it "Nethu Raathri Amma" or "Vacha Paarvai". Malayalam music fans were shocked that KJY sang that song in another language so breezily. Raaja sang that song in his own typical voice and asked KJY to sing in the same folk tone.

I sincerely hope that the Tamil Film Composers Union and Nadigar Sangam led by Vishal will resolve this situation. Vishal is planning a grand concert for Raaja and SPB is being pulled in. Senior artists like Rajni, Kamal, Sivakumar, Bhagyaraj, Parthiban and many directors, producers and singers both know Raaja and SPB well. No one is ready to voice their opinion for or against this issue. Piracy and copyright violation is worst in Tamil films and no one cares about paying royalty or due recognition for other's efforts. The pending Madras High court case related to Raaja's IPRS petition should help in resolving this problem. In the meantime, let's all continue to enjoy the timeless classics of both Raaja and SPB. No one is going to stop me from hearing their songs everyday. Future live shows by SPB will be a problem.

Sudhakar - Copyright (IPRS) law has been 100% enforced around 1990. Rahman has IPRS agreement for all his albums going back to Ad Jingles and Roja. Lahari Records owns full audio rights for all Ratnam movies including Roja. Annakili audio rights is with Saregama which was earlier HMV. Raaja started Echo Records to handle audio rights for his albums and later sold it off. The same is true for his Symphony orchestra. The Hungarian group won't agree to participate in recordings or 2011 Chennai concert without getting copyright papers signed. The problem has been on since 60s when KVM and MSV were composing. No one ventured to fight IPRS royalty like Raaja. With the proliferation of music piracy, MP3 format, YouTube, 24x7 Web radio, TV music competitions and mega concerts, audio rights has become more prominent.

When friends turn foes
Times of India | Mar 23, 2017, 10.37 AM IST

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/tamil/movies/news/when-friends-turn-foes/articleshow/57786402.cms

What are the odds that Tamil cinema's greatest composer, director and playback singer would all start their careers at the same time, together in one room? Astronomical, right? This remarkable story doesn't start in Chennai, though. It begins when malaria inspector Chinnachamy (as Bharathirajaa was then called) visits Pannaipuram on an official visit and meets the Paavalar brothers — Varadarajan, Baskar, Raajaiah and Amarsingh. This musical band-of-brothers make their living performing in propaganda meetings of the Communist party. Bharathirajaa immediately finds common ground with them. They are kindred souls. All of them, especially Bharathirajaa, Raaja and Amaran have stars in their eyes. They dream fantastic dreams of making it in Kodambakkam. But they are only dreams; poverty and family situations hold them back. Bharathirajaa is the first to take the leap of faith. He throws up his government job and rides his fantasy to Madras. It should have been like Prabhas chasing the damsel up the waterfall in Bahubali, insanely risky and driven by passion. Raaja and Amaran follow shortly. As they reunite, a young upcoming singer, Balu (SP Balasubrahmanyam) joins them. The rest, as they say, is history.

The quartet (because Gangai Amaran was no lightweight either) would go on to become pillars of the very Kodambakkam they once stood in awe of. As us, fans, look on dismayed as battle rages between them in the recent past, let me offer a little bit of consolation through some nostalgia. It was quite a partnership. Consider this. SPB singing for Ilaiyaraaja and Bharathirajaa, Ilaiyaraaja composing for Bharathirajaa, Amaran writing lyrics for Bharathirajaa and Ilaiyaraaja, Ilaiyaraaja composing for Gangai Amaran's films, Ilaiyaraaja producing movies directed by Bharathirajaa and Amaran, SPB singing in Amaran's music... At one point, there was even a plan for Amaran to star as hero in a Bharathirajaa film! I have often wondered if working together that consistently was the defining reason for their scarcely believable success. In my mind, I see the genius of Ilaiyaraaja as the fulcrum of the coalition, the fuel that fed their creative fire (You are, of course, welcome to disagree). Consider their impact on Tamil Cinema.

Bharathirajaa, a genius in his own right, changed the very landscape of our films overnight. He dragged Tamil filmdom kicking and screaming out of its musty studios into the breathtaking beauty of our villages and neon-lights of Chennai. I also consider Mudhal Mariyathai the best Tamil film ever made. SPB would go on to become the most prolific male playback singer in th e country. Gangai Amaran, apart from his lyrical efforts would go on to direct Karagattakaran, the film that still holds the record for most-numberof-days in theatres and add significantly to the rural milieu. Ilaiyaraaja's contributions are too legion and well known to recount here. You can't help but feel that they couldn't have done it without each other. Here's hoping they resolve their differences. Ippadai thorkin eppadai vellum.

My songs, my royalties (The Hindu)
Achille Forler
March 28, 2017 00:15 IST

The Ilaiyaraaja-S.P. Balasubrahmanyan controversy puts the spotlight on our miserable record in fostering a fair and sustainable creative ecosystem for songwriters
Light, it is said, is the greatest disinfectant and music the greatest healer. The controversy over the legal notice by Ilaiyaraaja to S.P. Balasubrahmanyam to claim royalties for the performance of his songs will serve a greater purpose if it can clarify the confusion on this subject in the minds of music industry professionals and the legal fraternity.

Music is an essential component of our human identity. There is no culture without music. This country has been blessed with an unbroken line of musical giants — right from the Sama Veda, the Sangam and the Tamil Saiva saints to Amir Khusro and Tansen through to our own contemporaries like Hariprasad Chaurasia, M.S. Subbulakshmi, A.R. Rahman and countless others — who have woven the various traditions of this country into a musical tapestry that is a marvel to the world.

A fair deal for songwriters
But, to create, one must eat. Under earlier aristocratic and monarchic systems of governments, artists received their livelihood from the patronage of the rulers. Under modern copyright law, whose fundamentals are enshrined in the Berne Convention (1886) to which India is a signatory, lyricists and composers — jointly called songwriters — earn their livelihood through a fair remuneration for any use of their works during their lifetime and 60 years after their death. In other words, royalties are the salary and pension plan of creators and the legacy to their heirs.

This basic principle of copyright law was spectacularly reaffirmed in May 2012 when both Houses of Parliament, in a rare show of bipartisanship, unanimously adopted the amendments to the Copyright Act in the face of fierce opposition from film and music producers. In a letter to thank the Prime Minister for supporting creators, Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar stated that he had retained his copyright in all the work he had done abroad but had been unable to retain a single copyright in any work he did in India because “every time the record companies would flash the Copyright Act at me”. It is against this backdrop that we must examine Ilaiyaraaja’s action.

The kind of stellar body of work that Ilaiyaraaja has created in the last 40 years should have placed him among the world’s Top 10 wealthiest songwriters, somewhere between Andrew Lloyd Webber ($1.2 billion) and Mick Jagger (over $300 million). So one can understand the depth of his frustration — a feeling experienced by all songwriters across the country — when he sees little royalties, if any, from the use of his works even after they become super hits.
Why do Indian songwriters miss out on royalties? Can Ilaiyaraaja prohibit the public (live) performance of his songs? To answer these questions, understanding the role of performing rights organisations (PRO) in the global collection and distribution of royalties is essential.

The importance of PROs
PROs were created in the mid-19th century in response to the impracticality for the owners of music to licence each and every live performance of their songs around the country and the globe. Under this arrangement, songwriters and their publishers would assign/transfer to a PRO — such as the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) in India — their right to authorise the public performance of their songs. In return, the PRO would collect a fee for every musical performance in its country and distribute the money equally between the songwriters and the owner (publisher) after deducting a 15% service fee.

Additionally, the PRO will enter into reciprocal agreements with similar societies around the world, doing the same work in their own territory. Essentially, such agreements say that I give you the exclusive authority to collect the royalties when the music of my members is performed in your country; reciprocally, I will collect whenever music of your members is performed in my country. And we will pay each other.

Under this single-window clearance, the user obtains a licence to commercially perform any music in the world and the royalties collected by the PRO are distributed accordingly. Last year these PROs, representing four million lyricists-composers and their publishers, collected over ₹61,000 crore (€8.641 billion) in 123 countries!
This global system of royalties collection and distribution is regulated by the Paris-based not-for-profit International Confederation of Authors and Composers Societies (CISAC). To become a member and benefit from this global system, a PRO must conform to CISAC’s demanding standards of efficiency, fairness and transparency called

The Professional Rules.
Ilaiyaraaja is a member of the British ‘PRS for Music’ and was issued an international identifier no. 619442541. Having divested himself of his performing right in favour of PRS for music, he had therefore no locus standi to issue such a legal notice. Only PRS for Music and its sister societies around the globe have the right to licence the public performance of Ilaiyaraaja’s songs. We must conclude that the celebrated composer received bad advice.

But this begs the question: why would Ilaiyaraaja want to become a member of a foreign society? Because IPRS has a miserable record of service to its members. Its annual income is hardly ₹40 crore, a figure that compares poorly to similar PROs that in 2016 collected ₹225 crore in South Africa, ₹550 crore in Russia or a massive ₹1,825 crore in Brazil. Worse, in 2014 the IPRS surrendered its licence to operate as a legitimate copyright society when it came under investigation by two separate arms of the government. Thereafter its bank accounts were seized by the Enforcement Directorate.

Subsequently, a CISAC audit in 2015 found that IPRS was meeting almost none of its Professional Rules; after two warnings went unheeded, last June CISAC expelled the IPRS for one year. As a result, all royalties collected for the use of Indian music will be held in suspense accounts around the world until IPRS reforms and is readmitted into the CISAC fold.

A fair ecosystem for all
Lastly, songs must be registered in every PRO of the world. This is the responsibility of the music publisher or, in its absence, of the PRO in the country of origin of the songwriter. We find that only 180 songs of Ilaiyaraaja are registered in the U.S., only two in France, none in Germany… so even after the organisers of S.P. Balasubrahmanyam’s concerts pay royalties to a PRO, this money cannot reach Ilaiyaraaja if his songs are not found in its database.

Only an efficient and transparent IPRS can foster a fair and sustainable creative ecosystem for all players, big and small, newcomers and established songwriters, to take the musical talent of India to global heights.

Ilayaraaja's copyright lawsuit is known to everyone in South Indian cine world. The Madras High court victory in 2015 was highly publicized and many producers thanked Raaja for the initiative. Watch his brief press meet with Producer Thanu and his explanation on how close friends cheated him. It's very surprising that SPB and Charan embarked on a global tour without talking to their lawyers or sponsors about music royalty. In any SPB concert, his fans always expect him to sing majority of Raaja's compositions. SPB50 organizers should have negotiated payment to IPRS. His global tour started in 2016 with Toronto and Moscow. The latest USA tour started only in March. They had plenty of time to resolve this issue. Unfortunately another close friend has cheated Raaja. The loss is for Indian music lovers who cannot hear SPB singing Raaja's songs in a live setup. It appears that Charan is adamant not to pay any IPRS payment for Raaja's songs but he will pay for Rahman's songs. SPB is now leaning heavily on MSV and KVM's songs since there is no royalty issues for these composers. MSV's family is living a mediocre life and Raaja did a concert in 2016 to collect money for MSV's family. Rajini and Raaja handed over the cheque to MSV's family. SPB and Charan should pay some royalty to MSV for singing his compositions.

It's more of a prestige issue now since SPB & co put it out in FB and I don't think there will be any solution to this until SPB go back to India(mid-April) and Kamal or some middleman try to bridge the gap between them

With all due respects to SPB, the organizers of his shows (yes that includes charan) are not doing any social service and are making quite a business with these songs. There is nothing wrong in the notice hence. If this was a charity show and raja sent a notice, we have an option of feeling bad or upset.
Not in this case, for sure.

People should pause for a moment and look at list of Top 100 Musicians (http://www.therichest.com/top-lists/top-100-richest-musicians/) in the world. You won't find the name of World record holder for composing the maximum number of albums (above 1000) and songs in this list. Many people know this fact and his amazing music collection had shattered world records several decades ago. I have written about this issue in this group since Indian film/ music industry has a poor track record of maintaining sales numbers and providing copyright ownership to all musicians, lyricists, singers and artists.

One small example - I have calculated that "Ithu Oru Pon Malai Pozhuthil" song would have shattered many Platinum records worldwide, if all sales records from thousands of illegal cassette shops in India, Malaysia, Gulf, Singapore, UK, Sri Lanka besides radio broadcasting in AIR and Ilangai Vanoli were properly accounted. Legal sales of cassettes, CDs and LP Records within Tamil Nadu don't provide the full picture. There are hundreds of such platinum hits from Ilayaraaja. The present generation of youngsters cannot fathom the enormity of Raaja's accomplishments.

Director Velu Prabhakaran nicely explains how Raaja never got his full worth for his enormous accomplishments.

Copyright issue: Sun TV barred from using Sony Music Recordings (More fallout from Raaja's notice to SPB)

Chennai, April 21: Today, the Madras High Court has passed a landmark order where in SUN TV who were found using a number of Sony Music songs without prior approvals, are restrained from using Sony Music copyrighted work with immediate effect. This judgement was passed by The Honorable Justice Mr.K Kalyanasundaram after the global music giant challenged the leading Chennai based television network. This important order validates the rights that have been given to Creators and Owners and will go a long way to ensure a fair economic balance between the creative community and the larger broadcast and internet organisations.

Approvals from music rights owners are mandatory before using (synchronization) songs with new visuals. The music could be existing songs, versions or underlying works. TV Broadcasters, Advertisers, Film producers and Internet companies who use existing music will now need to seek prior permission from copyright owners before communicating to the public including broadcasters.

This decision will help the music and film industry as authors, composers and labels shall be entitled to claim their rightful share.

Kannan - Thank You for posting this. Excellent article... I could not find the first and fourth series in the site. Can you please the link for 1st and 4th series?

I am continuing to study Western music composers and producers who have produced major hits since 1950s. Almost all legendary composers, except for very few giants, have produced around 15-20 major hits (Songs or Albums) during their peak career. Each one of these hits were produced over a period of 6-8 months - each song/ tune would take several months to be fully in production mode with lyrics and score. One such legendary music producer Rick Rubin (Def Jam label) has his own music studio in his Malibu, California mansion. Rubin has had 18 Grammy nominations and eight wins. He takes several weeks or months to come up with a new tune. Our Raaja can churn out original tunes in minutes and the entire music album is ready in 1-2 days. This is mind boggling to think....

Raaja just took a poem and a song was produced. Raaja mesmerized people a day ago at a function - watch the 20 mins video.

Today, June 2nd is a big day for Tamil Cinema. It is the birthday of the legendary music composer and an inspirational film-maker. Yes, we are talking about Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja and Mani Ratnam.

Ilaiyaraaja turns 74 today, while Mani celebrates his 62nd birthday. Both of them have worked together in several films and Raaja has been a major cause for uplifting the already elevated quality of Mani's films. The songs and background scores that have come out in the films from their combination have always topped the charts and have been critically acclaimed too. Even though their amalgamation didn't continue from the early 1990s, the existing legacy is very much loved by their fans.

Ilaiyaraaja's most recent release was Enga Amma Rani and we are all eagerly awaiting his next, Naachiyaar, directed by Bala. Mani Ratnam struck a chord with his recent, Kaatru Veliyidai and there are a lot of expectations over his next film, which is widely speculated to be with Aishwarya Rai.

We wish both these incomparable and blessed legends a very happy birthday and a long life ahead. We also hope that somewhere down the line, they would collaborate yet again to re-create their magic.

Ilaiyaraaja has composed for a Telugu album with two songs (Thikkalodi Vesham and Naa Kadhalo Yuvarani). Naa kadhalo is a smooth breeze of a melody but my personal favourite is thikkalodi vesham! No one does jazz better in indian film music than this guy :D

Padma Vibhushan (2018) for Ilaiyaraja.

Glad that he was recognised at least now, even though accoladed only 5 times with National Film Awards [1984, 1986, 1989, 2010, 2016].

Does anyone know who recommended Ilaiyaraja for Padma Vibhushan ? Thanks.

Congratulations to our Dear Maestro Raaja in receiving the second highest civilian award from Govt. of India. This is a well deserved award. Raaja thanked the Modi administration for recognizing the Tamil Nadu people while awarding this prestigious award. In many occasions Raaja has mentioned that big Isai Jambhavans like KV Mahadevan, MS Vishwanathan, Salil Chowdhury weren't recognized with Padma Awards. MSV, Salil and Burman weren't even given National Music Direction awards. Our national awards rarely split the awards between two films or artists. Raaja should have received the National Award for Vaidehi Kathirunthal in 1985 but he was given the honor for Sindhu Bhairavi the same year. We can quote several such misses from Raaja's world record of 1,100 film albums. The legendary Italian music director Ennio Morricone finally received his US Academy Award from Oscar committee in 2016 for Hateful Eight, becoming the oldest person ever to win an Oscar. Morricone's signature tune from 1966 hit movie "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" became the most copied musical piece in many movies.

On another note, Maestro is starting his USA Symphony tour in March 2018. He is bringing the Budapest Symphony Orchestra along with Chithra, Mano, Haricharan and Rahul Nambiar. It is expected that the symphony orchestra will be used to render some rare songs and tunes for Raaja's fans. I am waiting to attend the concert after seeing him in US in 2016.

Mayyam admins: Please open a new 2018 thread for Maestro.

Two examples of world class background scores - Raaja's title score from Raaja Parvai and Morricone's signature tune from 1966 classic. Splendid performances from two geniuses.

Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the transparency in Padma Awards selection process in his first 2018 Mann ki Baat radio speech and how anyone could nominate any person online. The earlier selection processes was done via political recommendations. In that regard, Tamil Nadu was always dealt a raw deal by state and central governments. It is very unfortunate that one of the most illustrious and famous music director from Tamil Nadu - Mellisai Mannar MSV wasn't conferred any Padma or National Film awards. MSV is considered one of the stalwarts and architects of propagating the spirit of Dravidian movement through his popular tunes with the help of Poet Kannadasan. Look at the number of super duper albums from MSV in classical tunes. MSV should have received the National Award for Aboorva Raagangal in 1975. Vaani Jayaram won the Best Playback singer for the same film. Our subsequent Tamil Nadu state governments failed to nominate or didn't exert enough pressure to confer a Padma Vibushan to Mellissai Mannar. The entire Tamil film fraternity and Raaja spoke about this injustice in various forums. MSV should have received the highest honor - The "Dadasaheb Phalke" Award. We all know how Maestro Raaja lost another National Award for his 2011 Telugu magnum opus album "Sri Rama Rajyam" because the National Film screening committee had bad sound system in the New Delhi screening theatre. There was a big uproar for completely neglecting the Telugu film industry that year. The best music direction award for Raaja was missing. Instead the National Film award jury gave the Best Music Direction award to an unknown Bengali film "Laptop" and Mayook Bhowmik won the award.

At the same time, it is very heart warming to note that two illustrious Tamil Nadu artists - Maestro Raaja and Rahman, both bagged a total of 9 National Awards in a span of 35 years. Their combined awards overtakes the number of national music awards bagged by artists from other states. A national award to Raaja or Rahman is considered as a honor to the people of Tamil Nadu. That's exactly what Raaja mentioned during his Padma press conference. The number of awards bagged by the two great Tamil citizens is a testimony and honor to all the great music directors who worked in Tamil films - MSV, CR Subburaman, TK Ramamoorthy, and G Ramanathan.

The reach of social media and internet was so rudimentary in early 1980 and 90s. The phenomenon of YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp all started just 10 years back. Today, New York City is hosting the 60th Edition of Grammy Awards. As you all know, unlike Oscar Academy awards, the Grammy music awards is given to music artists all over the world including religious choirs and traditional folk albums. It's a glaring omission to note that Maestro's outstanding non-film music albums - Nothing But Wind, How to Name It and Thiruvasagam weren't even nominated for Grammys. Madhura Sudha is doing an amazing job in analyzing Maestro's tunes. Kudos to Madhura.

It's time to fix this imbalance in neglecting the immense talented artists from India in international stage. India continues to nominate three hour long movies with songs and dances to Oscar committee. The Academy jury will doze off after 30 minutes of watching our films. I can guarantee that Padmavat will be nominated from India for next year's Academy Award. Padmavat songs are terrible. The producers spent crores of money in lavish sets and paying artists but fail to spend a fraction of the money towards background score and music album. Maestro Raaja could have brought Budapest Symphony Orchestra and provided a world class score for the movie.

Listen to our great Raaja fan Shri. Madhura Sudha describing the intricate details of "How to Name It" album. Folks at Grammy selection jury should listen to this video clip.
