Kannada Films during 50's,60's and 70's had very good music from stalwarts like Ranga rao, aswathama,Vijayabhaskar, T.G.Lingappa,Ghantasala,Rajan-Nagendra,G.K.Venkatesh.

this would be the place to bring in some gems from that period.

That was a period where good directors like S.R.Puttanna, B.R.Bandhulu
actors like kalyan kumar, udayakumar , rajkumar and actresses like
kalpana, aarthi, jayanthi, sarojadevi gave good performances. Lyricists like sadashiviah, prabhakara sastry, ku.ra.see,vijayanarasimha gave good lyrics.

Let us recollect that era with some memorable songs of that period.

To Start with

"Cheluvantha chennigane"
Movie: Amarashilpi jakkanachari
Music: S.Rajeswararao
Lyrics: Sadashiviah
Singer: P.Suseela
film had Kalyankumar & B.Sarojadevi in lead

this is a great song by S.Rajeswararao
In telugu the film was amara shipli jakkanna
and the equivalent song is Andhala bomalotho aatadava

coming to this kannada song, it's a dance sequence song sung beautifully by PS. see how she sings kannada too effortlessly

listen and enjoy

I didn't find any other suitable place to post.. Here is a superb song 'kanakana' by Madhu Balakrishnan from 'Apthamithra' (MD: guru kiran)..

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/18/s/movie_name.7397/ (3rd one)

Madhu's deep voice gives life to this light classical song. Sadly there's no counterpart to this (I mean, of equal calibre) in the tamil version 'chandramukhi'.

Yes indeed. All songs in that film were very popular during those days. Kalpana, chimdodi Leela, Gangadhar, played the main roles. One peculiar character played by one shri Shiva ram (RAASHI brothers fame) as a cook gave the name to him as ‘SharapaMjara Shiva ram’ and even today he is recognized by this name.

The lyric of the song goes like this:

Kan+glish (kannada mixed with English) language.

To understand this song, one should know the situation of the song. Otherwise lyric’s meaning will differ from the original.

The situation is: Lakshmi’s husband doesn’t know that his wife is in jail for some offence she had committed earlier. Lakshmi’s sister Sarasvathi who is unmarried and brave girl is in sister’s house enacting as Lakhsmi with sister’s small child, and tactfully avoiding the sister’s husband to come closer. Lakshmi’s husband, Sarasvathi and small child are involved during the song.

Song:
Man: To spread moonlight on the earth full moon day has to come
To make the life a lullaby song loving wife should be there

On that day you wanted friendly intimacy
Today why do you want to stay away and alone

Woman: wish for a word when only both of us
See there is some one (child) smiling between you and me

Man: This little child doesn’t know to speak he is like a god
Doesn’t know anything take him to bed (let to sleep) don’t make delay

Woman: Accept your mistake you’re saying these words in front of god (child)
Don’t trouble I request you not to loose patience now [/tscii:cf81b3fe7a]

Meaning of the lyric 'dEvanu taMda' from the film 'vasaMta lakShmi'

Any song starts with 'jo jo jo' or 'laali laali' is a lullaby song, so this song also. Happiest mother expresses her joy about her child and sing this lullaby song while admiring almighty god.

Song:

This relationship brought by the almighty god
has brought me joy/happiness

Where from you where from myself
what an anxiety to see you
heartfelt of joyous honey
Golden fish (child) from desire of ocean

All the moonlight in handful
poured into casting mould as brightness
brought as gift after giving life
has almighty offered it today?

Joyous eyes to become moonlight
mindful of your presence
made this house to have more brightness
became oblivious seeing you

When she calls rama, the parrot replies in its voice

Arerere giNi Rama – hello parrot rama (giNi-parrot, rama is parrot’s name)

Pancharamgi – parrot with five colors
MatADo – speak on
Nanna putta Rama – my small pet parrot
I like you I am interested in you
Rama I surrendered to you after seeing you
Don’t leave me and go away Rama.

Till yesterday I was not like this - it is not myself
I can’t concentrate
I am disturbed (upset) I can’t bear
Mind is light (weight less) and joyous
Body is warm up
Wearing dress tighten up
Feeling uneasy ness (ede bhAra – heavy heart?)
Can’t live without you now onwards Rama
Speak once to me my pet Rama

It is like dancing tiny waist
My body trembled
I like to sit embracing you
Taking a dip in water during early morning dew
Rama it is hot of my warm breath
My body became withered flower
No, I won’t leave Rama
Won’t leave my pet Rama
Speak once to me my Rama[/tscii:23c07ae203]

[tscii:00ecabeb2a]The palace city ‘Mysore’ is famous for 2 things. Jasmine (mallige) flowers and a sweet named ‘Mysorepak’ made of gram flour, sugar and ghee.

The meaning of the song ‘aHA maisuru mallige’:

koras: ailesa aisa – fishermen’s words framed in to the song.

Aha maisuru mallige – hello maisuru jasmine (young lady is compared to jasmine flower)
DunDu mallige – another variety of jasmine flower (with more layers)
My lovely wealth, blooming beauty
You have occupied my mind fully.

Koras: waves are dancing, tossing sprinkles (twice)
See towards the sky coquet showy woman

Hello handsome attractive guy (chenniga!)
Amazed of your connoisseur - deceived of your speech
You have filled in my mind.

PBS: I saw a golden lady (golden fish!) in my life of ocean
The net hurled from eyes dragged me-I walk like a prisoner

PS: You became my companion (repeat)
Come friend - my handsome guy

[tscii:9e8bbf12d6]The meaning of the song ‘baMdE barutAva kAla’

Time will come - time will come
Tender (sweet?) dreams and
The mind, which has seen those dreams
Net of friendship unites them into one
Time will come

(mAgIya ede tOri) ? call of cuckoo
Trees in forest dancing for that melody
Creepers swing their slender body
Saying that life will not go alone

Full moon day’s moonlight from the sky like cold sweet milk
Slowly spreading made the earth delighted
Curtain of magic covered the world
Earth and sky both have blessed our living

[tscii:66a5b912bd]Hello Rajesh,

One more golden song picked up by you from the treasure.
Ratnagiri rahasya(Padmini pictures-B R Panthulu), an age-old folk story made as film during those days of 1957. The hand-some, tall man like a tarzan was Shri Udaya kumar (Michelle, you guessed right!) with jamuna. The film has 9 songs, which are beautifully tuned by T G Lingappa, lyrics by kanagal prabhakara sastry.

List of songs:

1. AnaMda mahadAdanaMda (jikki, rajalakshmi, Rani)
2. anurAgada amarAvati (Leela P,Soundara rajan T M)
3. amarA madhurA prEma (Susheela P)
4. bA bA bA Odi bA bA bA (Leela, Rani)
5. kivi eraDu sAkEnayya (Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi)
6. kalyANa namma kalyANa (Leela p, Soundara rajan T M)
7. O raja O maharaja (Rani, Sarojini R)
8. SharaNara kayo jagannatha (Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi)

hello RR

'yenu arthaagilla..! solpaa karunaa maadi..'

It is simple that "mAgi kAla" is winter season. Likewise "vasaMta kAla" is spring season. The cuckoo's singing during 'spring' season matches with fifth note of karnatak music "pa"(paMcama swara)
where thare are no other equivalets to 'pa" note. (although cuckoo make sound as usual like any other bird but poet's imagination is that). But in winter season, when most of the trees are withering their leaves, cuckoo's singing will not be in happiest mood.

with regard to lyric 'mAgiya ede tOri kUgItu kOgila' , I am unable to decipher these words.

I also heard the song 'cheluva chandana' from the film 'giya giya gagiya'. Music is good though not used convestional instruments
and in slow pace, mild. But it has run for more than 5 mintutes with repetition of words several times.

‘Tribhuvana janani jaganmohini’ a semi classical song from the film Premada putri(1957) is a popular one even today.

She has sung very melodious numbers for Kannada films during1950 – 1970. Solo, duets, chorus songs with legends like Ghantasala, TM Soundararajan, Sirkali Govindarajan and also with Bhanumathi, Jikki, Rani, Sarojini, LR Eshwari and others.

hi Rajesh,
This is a good topic you have started. I am looking for another song from the same movie, "Amarashilpi Jakanacahri"...

The song is "Surasundaraanga krishna.. ne baroo..." sung by P.Susheela and picturised on Sarojadevi and... Ramadevi as the dance teacher. P.Susheela's voice rightly matched to Sarojadevi in this movie.

This song is rarely heard so wanted to check whether i can get online.

In telugu the film was amara shipli jakkanna
and the equivalent song is Andhala bomalotho aatadava

coming to this kannada song, it's a dance sequence song sung beautifully by PS. see how she sings kannada too effortlessly

hi Rajesh,
Small correction,
This had Jayanthi, Aarthi, Chandrashekar and Ranga in the lead. There was none by name Harinath in this movie.

It was very sad that actor Ranga, who played the husband of Jayanthi in this movie died after this movie in an accident, who could not be there to enjoy the success of the movie. Ranga has acted in many old movies.

Chandrashekar who played the Tomboy role, now based in US, recently produced a movie "Poorvaapara" which was shot in US having Geetha, Naveen Mayur and Lakshmi Gopalswamy.

thanks & regards,
Arun

Here is the lyric with notes in the song. Though it is a tough task I have re-written the lyric while listenig to the song. There may be small mistakes might have crept-in in rewriting this. Even then I can’t differentiate the pitch of the notes (like Mandra, Madhya, Thara sthaayi) because of limitations of English script and also tempo of the notes. For this you will have to take guidance of an expert musician. I hope you will get what you required.

The film ‘Badavara bandhu’ is a colour film released during 1976. It is a story of a rich man’s son brought up by an ordinary poor man. Dr. Raj had played the role of ‘hotel server’ excellently in this film and he takes care of his colleagues against the dictatorship of the hotel Manager and others and finally happy ending. Excellent and meaningful lyrics by Chi. Udayashankar

From the year 1954 with ‘Bedara Kannappa’ to 2000 of ‘Shabdavedi’ with actress Jayaprada, Dr. Raj had acted in 205 films. None of his films were ever given ‘A’ certificate.

May his soul rest in peace.

The lyric of the song ‘naidileyu huNNimeya’ follows:

citra: baDavara baMdhu (1976)
gAyana: pi sushIla
saMgIta: eM raMgarAv
sAhitya: ci udayashaMkar

naidileyu huNNimeya caMdrana mareyuvude

parimaLavannu haraDada hAge mADuva jANaru yAru
tIrada Aseyu tAne capalavu EkO kANe /naidile/

The meaning of the song:

Can water Lilly forget full moon’s moonlight?
Can lotus live without sunlight?

Can flowing river run away from the ocean?
Can drops of (heavy-suriyuva) rain instead of falling on the earth, where can they go?
Can’t see any one who knows the Almighty’s rules.

Is it possible to hold light like holding a lamp in hands?
Who is that clever can avoid spreading of fragrance?
Why are this un-ending hankerings and desires (in me)?

[tscii:894de6fb3f]Dr. Rajkumar & Ilaiyaraaja combination

I want to make this week a Dr. Rajkumar special, with the passing of a Legend of the Indian cinema. Maestro was very close with him, as a budding music director, when working as assistant under GK Venkatesh (GKV was a famous Kannada MD and the MD for many of Rajkumar movies). They had a so close relationship that when Rajkumar was kidnapped by Veerappan, Ilaiyaraaja had been mentioned in the press as stating that he is willing to even sacrifice his life for getting him back from Veerappan.

Following details are found in Maestro’s interview to Kalyan (Kannada film lyricist).

“GKV has scored music for Sampathige Savaal. Ilaiyaraaja was his assistant. PB Srinivas was supposed to have sung for Dr Rajkumar in that movie. But GKV’s assistant didn’t prefer the song ‘yare koogadale, oore horadali’ to be sung by PB Srinivas. He had told his guru GKV about this. Then they both discussed and decided that it should be sung by Dr Rajkumar only. That laid the base for Dr Rajkumar to become one of the best playback singers in Kannada field. Are you surprised that the credit for this should go to Ilaiyaraaja? But then, that is history.

Once a song was to be sung by PB Srinivas. That film was Sampathige Savaal. I told GKV ‘anna, this song would be very soft if sung by PB Srinivas. It would be nice to have this in a bold and bright voice.’

He asked who can sing it then. ‘Shall we ask Muthuraj to sing?’ I asked. Muthuraj means Dr Rajkumar sir. I asked GKV if he could sing. ‘hey, he has worked in the drama company, he can sing excellently even without a mike. He is the best choice, let us have this sung by him.’ I was very happy. He asked ‘but why PB Srinivas should not sing this?’ I said PB Srinivas is singing all the songs in the movie. I feel this song will come out nice if sung by PB Srinivas.

He said ‘if Muthuraj said ok, I don’t have any objection.’ Next scene, Dr Rajkumar has come to the recording theatre. As per situation, I had to teach him the song. GKV used to forget the tune often. I used to remind him ‘anna, this is not like this, like that’ etc. He said ‘then you yourself shall tech this song to Dr Rajkumar.’ He was a senior artist. I was a small boy. He just looked at me, I couldn’t go a step near him. He was a great soul and had a charisma. With mutual rapport between us, the recording went on well. ‘yare koogadale, oore horadali, ninna nimmadhige bhanga illa’ – this song was picturised on Dr Rajkumar, sitting on a buffalo and singing. You all know how well it clicked. It started the practice of his singing in his films. There is another evergreen song in my heart ‘thamma manuvu indhu nandhayithu’.”

Today, I am presenting three songs from Nee Nanna Gellalaare.

Anuraga Enaaythu:

This is a pathos-mixed romance song. Dr. Rajkumar has a very unique voice, well utilized by Maestro.

http://www.filefactory.com/?562c37

Jeeva Hoovagide:

A beautiful duet with a nice female chorus. The prelude humming reminds me of Engengo sellum song from Pattakathi Bhairavan.

http://www.filefactory.com/?91ada9

Music Mazine has analysed this song very well here.

http://www.themusicmagazine.com/drrajlegends.html

Rajkumar has been the leading hero in Kannada cinema for five decades, but he emerged as a singer only mid-way in his career, when he sang the energetic and wildly popular Yaare koogadali in the 1974 film Sampatthige Sawal. Legends presents this song in Volume 1.

Ilaiyaraja made the music for one Rajkumar film, Nee Nanna Gellalaare, and Legends features two songs from it -- Anuraga enaaythu and Jeeva hoovayithu. Both are notable for their unorthodox tunes and interludes. In the second song, Ilaiyaraja gets Rajkumar to sing on parallel tracks and achieves a warm, fugue-like effect, with the voices beginning at unexpected points and overlapping one another like waves.

Nanna Neenu Gellalare:

The situation here is a song competition between hero and heroine. Maestro has used Shrutibhedam concept, with various ragas.

http://www.filefactory.com/?add62e

This excerpt is from an article by Chaya Rao in www.raaja.com, which will help you to understand the song very well.

“A song in Kannada called Nanna neenu Gellalare (Movie - Nee Nanna Gellalare), he has used this range for the Shruthibhedham. It fits very well to the mood of the song. The subject in the song is that the hero and the heroine are competing with each other, arguing who amongst them has higher music knowledge. The song starts in Hindola and stays that way. In the second interlude the singers (S. Janaki & Dr. Rajkumar) start the swara alapanas.

S. Janaki Starts this sanchara - Sa Ga2 Ma1 Ga2 (Pure Hindola),
Dr.Rajkumar Replies - Pa Ni2 Sa1. Ni2 (Pure Shuddha Dhanyasi),

It goes on like this -

S. Janaki : Sa Ga2 Ma1 Dha1
Dr. Rajkumar: Pa Ni2 Sa Ga2 S
Janaki : Sa Ga2 Ga2 Ma1 Ma1 Dha1 Dha1 Sa Ni2 Ni2 Ni2
Dr.Rajkumar: Pa Ni2 Ni2 Sa Sa Ga2 Ga2 Pa Ma1 Ma1 Ma1
S. Janaki : Ga2 Ma1 Dha1 Ni2 Ni2 Sa Ni2 Dha1
Dr.Rajkumar : Ni2 Sa Ga2 Ma1 Ma1 .Pa Ma1 Ga2
and it goes on and on.

After which Dr. Rajkumar sings the Mohana swaras (Sa Ri2 Ga3 Pa Dha2 Sa) - Hindola equivalent (Dha1 Ni2 Sa Ga2 Ma1 Dha1), Madhyamavathi Swaras (Sa Ri2 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa) - Hindola equivalent (Ni2 Sa Ga2 Ma1 Dha Ni2), then Hindola swaras, followed by Suddha Saveri (Sa1 Ri2 Ma1 pa Dha2 Sa) - Hindola equivalent (Ga2 Ma1 Dha1 Ni2 Sa Ga2) and finishes with Suddha Dhanyasi Swaras. Brilliant composition! who else but Raaja can do something this good!. "

great write up RR

Rajkumar was made to sing by GKV and thus PBS's chances faded. PBS himself says i was made to sing for rajkumar by GKV and the same GKV was the reason for his downfall but all in game..

coming to rajkumar's singing abilities, it's really wonderful amidst of great trained singers, he could compete and prove in many songs ..

Lot of info by you RR & Rajesh

Do you know this?

As early as 1959, Sri Muthuraj (Rajkumar) had sung a duet song with P Susheela(?)for the film ‘MahishAsura Mardhini’, a B/W film directed by B S Ranga.MD was GKV and lyrics by Chi. Sadashivaiah. The few lines of the song:

tuMbitu manava taMditu suKava
prEmada gALi nanna jIvanavaraLi
nanna jIvanavaraLi (eraDu sAri)

This song is hardly available to listen now except AIR.
But Rajkumar gave chance to PBS till 1974 when he sang ‘yaare kUgaDali’ in Sampathige Savaal. Raj’s body with voice of PBS in all Raj’ movies. In kannada they say ‘SharIra’ (body) and ‘ShArIra’ (voice). The voice of PBS was so matched to Raj, that layman never guessed there used to be a playback singer for Raj.

Because of competition, the song ‘nanna neenu gellalare’ was very famous during those days. Excellent composition by Ilayaraja.

Maximum numbers of songs (lyrics) for Raj’s movies are penned by chi. Udayashankar. You will never find a single unpleasant word in his lyrics.

The film ‘agni divya’ which was released during 1990 was a colour movie with Bhavya and Jaijagadish in lead roles. Not a popular movie at all.

Oh! What a selection from the treasure? Rajesh!

The film ‘maNNina maga’ a B/W film released during 1968. Rajkumar and Kalpana starring very popular/famous movie during those days. ‘maNNina maga’ means ‘son of soil’.
It is story of a difference between rich and poor of same family with happy ending. Scintillating music by Vijayabhaskar and meaning full lyrics by Geethapriya. Heroine sings this song after a party where many participants start misbehaving.

The other songs are:

1.bareyada kaigaLu bareyutire (S Janaki)
2.bhagavaMta kaikoTTa yAke? (PBS)
3.mellage naDeyOle mallige muDidOLe (PS)

The lyric of the song ‘idEna sabhyate’ follows:

citra: maNNina maga (1968)
gAyana: pi sushIla
saMgIta: vijaya bhAskar
sAhitya: gItapriya

idEna sabhyate idEna saMskRuti..

idEna sabhyate idEna saMskRuti

avara tyAga duDimeya parive namage illa
gAMdhi neharu shAstriyannu nAvu maretevalla

dEshadA samasyegaLu iralu kOTi kOTi
adanu maretu sAgide phyAshannina paipOTi
mAna muccikoLLalu kelavarige baTTe illa
pUrti maimuccalu kelavarige manasilla
kelavarige manassilla /idEna/

The meaning of the song:

Is it decency? Is it culture?
Is it today’s truthfulness? Is it our alertness?
Our mother India is asking/suffering with pain.

How many patriotic personalities sacrificed their blood
Got us freedom from slavery and became immortal
We saw a dream of that immortal ‘rAma rAjya’ then
Today we see only dissimilarity, differences.

Soldiers are watching at the borders of our country
To give food to us farmers are doing hard work
We are unaware of their hard work and labour
We have forgotten Gandhi, Nehru, and Shastry

Problems of the country are plenty (in crores - kOTi)
Fashion competition is dominating above these problems
Many people have no clothes to cover their body (to live in respect)
Some people don’t want to wear clothes fully

Here's a news item from Hindu:

The song "Gaali Gopura" from the film Nandadeepa is over 40 years old. But to this day it remains one of the most favourite film songs of Kannada film lovers. Even though we continue to sing this song composed by M. Venkataraju, not many perhaps know who the lyricist of the song is. Forget the masses, ask people in the industry and they'd probably look blank. Sorat Ashwath, the man who wrote many memorable songs lived a life of utter poverty, even as he enriched Kannada film music.

They were good because they were seriously into movies and not into politics. Looks like Kannada heroes can do well in other languages like telugu and tamil. Most notable ones were Rajnikant, JJ, Saroja Devi, Arjun and Murali.

The ones who stay back here today totally suck. They play into Mandya or Mysore politics. Everyone expects them to help them state the policy of Karnataka. And they play the drama as they are experts in it. Raj Kumar and his fans brought shame to Kannada. He started the trend. His actor friends in AP and TN guided him.

Even today they will do good if we see them as actors or actresses rather than leaders. We must ask them dance, laugh or cry and they will do it very well. But we expect them to lead us. That they will suck.

Typically in their movies they develop an image of Protectors of the Land, water, men and women. Common. What is this bs. And the heroine is there to sing and dance with him or support his ideology.

What is happening today is by subsidising them, we are letting them come into politics and rule us. That is what has happened in AP and TN and we are following their footsteps. For this the hard working Kannadigas are paying our taxes. What do we lose if there are no Kannada films ? In all the other states the Government earns from movies. But here we lose money on them.

Movie stars are becoming politicians as though they came to act to "speak" for the people. Our politicians should rule us and not these nataka people.

Today patriotism in our state is just watching and hearing Kannada films and music. It is taking heavy tolls on the prestige of Kannadigas. I see all forums in Kannada just talking about that or how to oppose the people of other languages. Why have we become like that ?

A beautiful selection!
The film ‘jEnu gUdu’ is a black and white film directed by Sri Y R Swami. South Indian famous actress Mrs. Jayanthi’s first film. Her name was Kamala kumari, which was changed as ‘Jayanthi’ subsequently. She was at the age of 14 years when YRS invited her to act in this film in the year ‘1962-63’. She had played a negative roll and third heroin in the order in this film.
Incidentally, Actress Mrs. Chandrakala’s first film also.
This song is a sequence of couple’s first night duet song having dignified words in the lyrics by ku ra si. Vijayakrishnamurthy’s music is magnificent.

The lyric follows:

The film name is ‘jEnu gUdu’ means ‘bee-hive’.

Meaning of the song:

We are together in this sweet (honey) night, what else we need
Stream of joyous essence spouting, I don’t need any more

Delicate humour, shivering body (mainimiru?) resulting in shaking hand
Don’t have hesitation, don’t have fear, be silent, you will come to know (gradually)
This is the way flowering plants sprout
God promise (shivanANe) some thing new for me (also), don’t ask further

Who you are, who am I, came to know and joined with love
Came together with affection, forgetting that we are two
(separate individuals)
Two bodies, one breath, this is the hymn we chant
Let us live happy life by which neighbours should feel shyness.

[tscii:fac7f32e9b]Hello friends,

Do you remember the song in hindi ‘Mere jeevan saathi pyaar kiye jaa’ from the film ‘Ek Duje ke liye’ starring by Shri Kamal Hassan and Ms.Rati Agnihotri. This song was written using names of hindi films during the year 1981. This might had inspired Hamsalekha to write a song with the names of Kannada films and it was materialized for the film ‘raNadhIra’. The crazy star Sri Ravichandran and Sri Hamsalekha brought a new trend in Kannada film industry when they produced the film ‘prEma lOka’ during the year 1987. It was a super hit film during those days. I think Ranadhira was a 2nd film of Sri Ravichandran. Shri Hamsalekha had used 42 names of Kannada films in this song. The film name AramBha is used for five times which gives meaning of ‘start’.

The lyric goes like this:

citra: raNadhIra (1988)
gAyana: ramEsh/pi sushIla

[tscii:ec8664ec70]Hello jyothi

Here is the lyric with notes in the song. Though it is a tough task I have re-written the lyric while listenig to the song. There may be small mistakes might have crept-in in rewriting this. Even then I can’t differentiate the pitch of the notes (like Mandra, Madhya, Thara sthaayi) because of limitations of English script and also tempo of the notes. For this you will have to take guidance of an expert musician. I hope you will get what you required.

The song is available here. But you have to become member to download/listen to this song. Membership is free.

[tscii:001c8e3618]Meaning of the song ‘ninna muKa araviMda’:

Your face is like lotus flower
If you smile, it is like sandal-wood (fragrance)
Pretty child, your smile is mother’s pleasure
Jo jo jo

You became a fountain in my deserted life
You are the support in my barren life
You came running for mothers appeal
You are my all hopes & ambitions
Your lovely face is a light of this home
You are the saviour of this home my child

Why do we need wealth if you are not there?
Do we require palace without you?
Only your love is our eternal wealth
Absence of your love worries all of us
You take all my pleasure
I will take all your pains
Honour of motherhood is that you my child

[tscii:bb1a145e14]The meaning of the song ‘joteyali’ from the film gIta :-

I will be with you (together) like this henceforth
Get you new happiness here afterwards
What have you spoken?
It was my wish that you said

Now I came to know what love is
My body warm-up for your sweet words
Mind danced in sweet dreams
For these lovely words
Inviting sight of your eyes
Come I will bring a lovely gift for you

Will enjoy as a pair in floating clouds
Let us speak to flying parrots and play with them
Will climb up rainbow
Let us play and slide
Sing together day and night[/tscii:bb1a145e14]

Hello All,

I'm very glad to have found this thread, and just in time too. I just started to get in the groove with Kannada film songs. I'm compiling a list of Kannada film and album songs based on ragas. Do any of you guys know if there's any already existing sites that feature information about Kannada film songs and their ragas?

hello Nitya

As such there are no such web sites I have found, which have listed songs pertains to particular raga except one :
www.hitxp.com - very few songs are listed on this site.

But ETV Kannada is telecasting a programme called 'Sangeetha Raga Ranjini' on Sunday's at 10.00 AM anchored by Shri Praveen Godkindi, a well known Flutist, and conducting orchestra for SPB's 'ede tumbi haaduvenu' programme.

Tomorrow (18-03-2007) he has selected 'Aahir bhairav' raga. Please watch and it will be useful for you to make list of songs

[tscii:93ab23d404]Hello Rajesh,

Very good selection from Dr. Raj’s movies. The film ‘huliya hAlina mEvu’(1979) is a novel based film written by Shri Bharathisutha. It was historical movie which was happened in Coorg district during the period of Mysore Maharaja Shri Narasimharaja wodeyar. The first stereophonic sound film of Dr.Raj.

The song is a romantic number with two young girls (also close friends) loving same person (Chengumani by name). Both of them are having daydream and feel playing with him in this song. Though the words in English are inadequate to elaborate the meaning of the kannada lyric (love song-amatory verses), you can feel the song sequence by watching the video clip.

The lyric follows:

citra: huliya hAlina mEvu (1979)

The meaning of the song:

Wish (desire) want to say my wish
Could not tell, I could not bear it also
My lover’s mischief
To my cheek (I kennege)

Ha… ha (yes I agree)

Rosy lips (ceMduTiyanU)

No body around on that day
I went for sleep in night
Though cool breeze was there, could not get cool
I failed in wane

Wanted something (new desire)
Warm up of that desire
I suffered

I called my lover who stayed in my eyes
(He) came running, stood in front of me
Understood my desire, He called me with love
I told not to do so

Shall I leave you (simply?)

I could not avoid that anxiety in hurry
I slipped (unknowingly) near to him saying ‘No No’
I slipped...

Got pressed by his encircled arms
I failed to him

Intoxicated by the desire to have some more
I became exhausted

Sight in lips mischief in waist
Lightning in the body and with enjoyable pain
I reached him

You showed the home of perfect joy (swargava tOride)[/tscii:93ab23d404]

You guys have very good collection of all old songs. Thanks for sharing them with all details and also for the translations of each one.

I am looking for another song in Kannada, 'Surasundaraanga Krishna.... ne baaro' from Amarashlipi Jakkannachaari sung by P.Susheela.

Its long time I watched this movie and could not forget this song. Somehow i did not hear them later either in TV or radio. All I got was the other songs, Nillunee..., Eno Entho, Cheluvantha chenigane. In this movie P.Susheela's voice turely matched to B.Sarojaadevi's voice.

[tscii:7c2ca0a5e8]The film ‘guru shiShyaru’ is a colour film in the year 1981 and produced by veteran actor, producer Shri Dwarakish and directed by Shri Bhargava. One historical episode was selected as film with more of comic scenes with an interesting story. Music was directed by Shri K V Mahadevan who had given fabulous music to Telugu film ‘Shankarabharanam’ with whom Sri S P Balasubramanyam has made his debut in singing classical songs in place of Shri Balamuralikrishna. One very popular song ‘doDDavarella jANaralla’(all great people are not wise enough) was a super hit during those days. Other songs are:
1. jaya jaya sAMbasadAshiva SJ
2. ninagAgi ella SPB/SJ
3. nAci ODidanu madana SPB/SJ

This is a song of competition with classical touch and bharata natyam sequences between King’s lover (wife?) and a call girl.
The notes of this song resembles to rAga-hiMdOLa.

The lyric goes like this:
citra: guru shiShyaru (1981)
gAyana: es jAnaki/pi sushIla

The meaning of the song:

Oh darling (O ramaNa), why don’t you listen (Alise) to the prayer (moreya) of this pitiable woman (dInaLa)
Oh darling is it right (sariye) to be silent(mauna) ?

Oh King (bhUramaNa), don’t you listen to the prayers of those humble people (dInara)
Oh King is it right (tarave) to be quiet?

This life is painful without seeing any support, don’t disappoint me
I am serving you, console me, accept and give me happiness

One more good song is "sanje kempu moodithu eruLu seraga hasithi endu naleya seerithu malagu veeLe aayithu...", good lyrics and beautifully rendered by P.Susheela.
SPB also adds few lines of the same song in a different situation.

"Radhike ninna sarasavidene....." one more superhit song from SPB.

[tscii:af0bd20ed3]Hi Rajesh
The link for this song is incomplete. Pl rectify.

The film ‘Bhayankara Bhasmasura’ is colour film released during 1983. It is not a mythological story as the name indicates. It is modern social drama depicting some men are cruel to women (harassing wife for money etc.,) and worse than that of mythological Bhasmasura. Not a popular movie. In this song, two women are involved, one is pessimistic and other one is encouraging her with optimistic words to lead life.

Shri M. Rangarao rendered interesting tunes and lyrics by Shri Vijayanarasimha. Shri C S R Rao directed the film.

The lyric follows:

citra: bhayaMkara bhasmAsura (1983)
gAyana: pi sushIla/es jAnaki
saMgIta: eM. raMga rAv
sAhitya: vijayanArasiMha

Meaning of the song:

Born as woman just for weeping
You brought love with you
Bound by sorrow and passion

Happiness will come in your life like cool breeze
Have smile with all wishes fulfilled
Small lamp (oil) can resist whirlwind
All (hundreds of) wishes broken into pieces
All troubles will turn into happiness in this way
You know this (tiLi)..
Cross (divided) road brought painful life

Woman is like a laughing character
Have to laugh surpassing all sorrows in life
Why did this curse came just for us

A new wish brought happiness
Took away yourself in future life
Appearance of hope with this girl child
Will take away all comforts in life
Abandon today itself all priorities
Starts with our sorrowful/bad time

This is a wonderful, joyous tale is here.
Listen to this new, moral story here.

A bird’s nest in a tree, anthill on the floor (near that tree)
Forest and river in between, listen to the story and sing

Ant was about to drown in the river; bird throws a leaf to rescue the ant.
Ant was waiting for the chance to help the bird, which saved its life

Childen: Next (with curiosity)
PBS: Hunter came like Yama (god of death)
Children: ayyoyyo is he kills?
PBS: can he miss the chance?
Children: hAM!

Particularly the 'Thangaali yalli naanu' is the best Song by Ilaiyaraja. It has everything, great rhythms, scintillating strings, freaking musical effects and S.Janaki spooking the hell out of the listener

[tscii:cc912d30fd]This film ‘hosa tIrpu’, which means ‘new justice’, a color film released during 1983 directed by Shri Shankar Nag. This film was not a hit movie. Shri Amabarish, Geetha, and Jayamala are in the lead roles. In olden days, there were people in fairs, who used to show moving slides in a small box with four viewing holes in it.
Children used to enjoy seeing it for a small price of 10-20 paise (penny).
This song refers to that with a story in that.

The lyric follows:

citra: hosa tIrpu (1983)
gAyana: pi sushIla
saMgIta: ji ke veMkaTEsh
sAhitya: ci udayashaMkar

Meaning of the song:

Come I will show a cinema for just 10 paise
That too good cinema
This cinema, which you have not seen earlier
No dark room, no chairs
No bed bugs to suck you

No justice here, no integrity here
No body is here to accept good character/quality
Talk lies, deceptive in mind
Money is big for these people
You should have courage to live with these people

No penny-money required to see
This free cinema
Which you have not seen earlier

Need wages to tie tALi (Mangalya-tiny ornament worn by wife)
Don’t you have strength to earn?
When love budding and called darling
Where was your father (was he not alive)?
Why do you have moustache, which is a waste
This mad lady is not for you go away

No penny-money required to see
This free cinema
Which you have not seen earlier

A loving woman and a fearing man
When they live together. [/tscii:cc912d30fd]

jai, did your CD have Kandagi Naanu by SPB. An absolute riot of a song. I think the early IR could do joie-di-vivre like nobody's business! And he seems to have been absolutely brilliant esp. in Kannada. The flute piece in the prelude before SPB goes Pababa is mesmerising.
Another album which is a must-hear is Nee Nanna Gellalare. His only colloboration with Dr.Rajkumar. Dr.Rajkumar did such a fine job that I didnt really miss SPB in this one.
Jeeva Hoovagidhe - S.Janki just melts in this one and Rajkumar provides a sober counterpoint. The I love you hook in the background is just out-of-the world
nanna neenu gellalare - Rajkumar runs riot here and I didnt really know of his singing prowess until I heard this one. Janaki is so-so.
Anuraga Enaithu - Coup-de-grace. Longing and yearning have never had a more accurate aural representation.

I used to believe Geetha was the best Raja did in Kannada but this one is undoubtedly the crowning glory of Raja's work in Kannada. Fittingly enough, it involved Kannada filmdom's biggest ever star.

Some of the early discussions in these thread refer to GKV's role in making Dr Rajkumar alias Muthuraj sing. However, it must be noted that Ilaiyaraja in his serialised cine experiences series in Dhina Thanthi talked about how he had originated that idea to GKV and was instrumental in getting Rajkumar to sing his first song.
Now, this cant be verified but it is hard to imagine that Raja would want to take undue credit for something like this .

[tscii:dcc0fa1858]Here is one comedy song from the Film Guru Shishyaru released during 1981 directed by Shri Bhargava and produced by Shri Dwarakish. Shri Dwarakish along with Shivaram, Umesh, Ratnakar, Bangalore Nagesh and others as innocent seven disciples of a Teacher have performed at their best in the movie.
The film was a successful in box office, because of comedy scenes and a small Piece of historic episode to make the film. Music by Shri K V Mahadevan.

The lyric follows:

The meaning of the song ‘doDDavarella’

All elders are not clever
All younger are not idiots (kONa-buffello indicates dull-not clever)
Whatever master (Teacher) says is not true
Friend it is not at all true.

Noble persons are not gentlemen
These people slip in (barge in) during nighttime only
Make big hole in the wall (burglers)
Run away with wealth (Money)
If we beat them (rhythmic beats of thakadhimi)
They sing in the raga thodi (crying)

Those who says sarigama padanisa are not musicians (they don’t know music)
Sari gama pada nisa
Just by saying sarigama padanisa they will not become musicians
They act as scholors (pandita) just by learing little (eraDaksharava kalitavarella)
Aa e ee au O ai Aum
There is no easiest sum (problem) than the table of
One multiplied by one is one.

Beautiful parrot will not swim in water
Crocodile cannot fly in air
Throat of crow will not affect (it can make the only sound of Ka.. ka..)
No body nurtures Owl
No body able to get disciples (shishyaru) like us.

[tscii:aa8c1e4c6c]Today is Vaikunta Ekadashi and there is a traditional belief that only today the gates of swarga (eternal) is kept opened for the full day. Here is a song from the film Sriniasa Kalyana, colour movie released during 1974 with Raj Kumar, Saroja devi, Manjula, Raja Shankar and others. The film was a story based on mythological episode, where Sri Mahavishnu took birth in the earth and lead an ordinary human life and finally settled at Tirupathi. The song narrates about the humble prayer of a devotee and is lucky enough to serve the god to sing lullaby and make God Srinivasa to rest on a bed comfortably.

Lyric goes here:

citra: shrInivAsa kalyANa(1974)
gAyana: es pi bAlasubramaNyam
saMgIta: rAjan nAgEMdra
sAhitya: ci. udayashaMkar

anugAla I sEve sAgutalE irali..
bhakti aritavanalla muktiyu bEkilla..
ninna kANadE jIva kShaNa kAla nilladayya /2/

Meaning of the song:

Paramatma (god) ShriVenkatesha sleep here
On the bed of jasmine flowers made of mind
Sleep here paramatma (god) saptagirivasa (owner of seven hills)

The way Kausalya sung lullaby to Rama
The way Anasuya enjoyed by singing lullaby (to Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswara)
Sing your greatness by worshiping you
Fulfill my mission and grace me today by arriving (dayamADi)

Let not the night ends and daylight comes in
Let my service to you goes on and on
I don’t know adoration and don’t want emancipation
If I don’t see for moment let my breath stops and life ends there.

Song: Manase Mudhavandhithe

Film:Amarashilpi jakkanachari
Music:Saluri Rajeswararao
Lyrics:Chi Sadashiviah
Singers: P.Suseela, Ghantasala

Sarojadevi was very busy in Tamil and Telugu movies and thus did very few movies in her mother tounge(kannada) but all were super hit films and Amarashilpi jakkanachari is one among them

This was produced in kannada and telugu at the same time.
Sarojadevi was the lead in both, Kalyankumar(kannada) /ANR(Telugu) played the male lead.

All songs from the film are hit songs

"cheluvantha chennigane",Nillu nee nillu nee, Surasundaranga, eno entho

I got mesemrized with this one rare song from the film
"Manase Mudhavandhithe" very well sung by PSuseela and ghantasala master. Nuances, high notes, and brigas well conceived tune makes this song a class

Watch and enjoy

My strength is the steps you put on
This beautiful evening is for the start of new art

It is like the arrow of flowers by Manmatha
It is like immortal music (suragAna) of flute (vENu) by Maadhava(Krishna)
Your image is planted (nATu) in my heart (hrudaya)
You are paraded in my mind (mana) and body (tanu)
You are beautiful woman like Ratidevi
Lovely jasmine without thorns
Wherever you see from your eyes
Ordinary stones will be turned into precious stones

Sweet melody of laughing (cukoo/parrot)? (kila kila)
Anklets making the sound of gala gala
