There is an inspiring 4 way fight out for any top prize in Men's Tennis starting from this year. For the first time in like 8-9 years we had a different individual winning a grandslam this year. With an ageing Roger(31) still fighting like a champ against the mid 20's and a new warrior on the battle field in Murray things got spiced up last year. Not to mention the fact that Roger crossed 300 weeks as No 1 and took the 17th Grandslam in 2012 we have a New No 1 Djokovic and an return from injury fresh Nadal starting from AO 2013. Things just can't look better for Tennis right now.

Let the future of Tennis season RocknRoll from now 8-)

P.S: Started this new thread as the old one was nearing 400 pages.

2011 Points until end of Wimbledon - 7460
2012 points until end of Wimbledon - 6645

After Wimbledon,
Missed 1 Grand Slam which he had to defend 1200 out of 2000 points
Missed 4 Masters which he had to defend only 280 points out of 4000 points.
Missed WTF which he had to defend only 200(1/3 in 2011) out of 1500 points.
Missed 1 M500 in which he had to defend 300 points out of 500.

David Ferrer is just 290 points below Nadal. In case if Nadal doesn't earn any points(has 90 in Doha) and Ferrer(has 250 in Auckland) earns 290 points(very unlikely), then we could probably see Djok/Fed/Mur playing Nadal in AO QF..

Wow! What a match that was between Djoko and Wawrinka?I wish this should have been a final match where at least the loser gets enough appreciation and prize money. Hats off Wawrinka. Today you earned so many hearts. Very powerful rallies and passing shots.. Djoko.. you are simply showing how so good you are during the time of crisis. You lost the first set and you climbed the ladder of success from a point where many people would have lost their hope and will. Wish this long hour game would not ruin your fitness for the forthcoming matches.

Now that Djokovic has gone past his most difficult match up in the tourney successfully, I will not be surprised if he has a relatively easier path to finals. I tip him to win this slam. A probable match up with Murray in the final. (even though I want Federer to win, I just feel Murray's ascendancy and Djokovic's never say die attitude might prove to be a little too much for the Swiss.)

Steffi Graf :: Waking up to the biggest surprise of the day, I got a chance this morning to catch the end of the epic battle between Djokovic and Wawrinka – brought back memories of last year’s final. Stanislas Wawrinka controlled early on leading 6-1, 5-2 until Djokovic found his rhythm and started playing more aggressive. The match stayed competitive all the way until the end but Djokovic, who always seems to have a physical edge over his opponents, claimed victory at 12-10 in the 5th. I’m curious to see how he will recover from the 5 hours and if he’ll be ready for another tough opponent in Berdych tomorrow.

^ Vinod. I guess it's time for us to just sit back and enjoy the man. He's done all thats possible in tennis. The possibility of another guy eclipsing his records is distant while possible. So why not just enjoy his tennis and forget about the results. While he played below par today, he did show grit and the backhand pass he played before he got the second set and the way he came back to win the 4th were amazing. His defeats aren't hurting me anymore. Two years back they did.

ATP not concerned about players' health, says Nadal

The 11-time Grand Slam winner said he doesn't expect major changes anytime soon, but thinks it's time tennis officials start thinking about ways to help improve the players' long-term health.

Sao Paulo: Rafael Nadal criticized the ATP on Tuesday for not doing enough to protect players' health, saying the increase in hardcourt events will lead to long-term injuries that will affect players long after they retire.

"The ATP worries too little about the players," said Nadal, who was in Brazil to play his second tournament after a long layoff from a left-knee injury. "It should care more for them."

The 11-time Grand Slam winner said he doesn't expect major changes anytime soon, but thinks it's time tennis officials start thinking about ways to help improve the players' long-term health.

"For future generations it would be good to see a less aggressive tennis life," he said. "Not only because of what happens during your career, but also because of what happens after your career, about how is your body when your tennis career is over."

Nadal said that because of the way tennis was played, he doesn't see himself being able to be a recreational athlete after his professional career.

"After ending the career it would be nice to be able to play football with friends, or tennis," he said. "But with this surface I don't think it's going to be possible."

The 26-year-old Nadal said hardcourts were "too tough" on players' bodies and made it impossible to keep them from getting hurt from time to time. Tennis is the only major sport where players have to play on cement, said the greatest clay-court player of the Open era, adding that it's an issue that doctors must get involved with, not only players.

"This is not a subject for the players, it's a matter for doctors," he said. "The ATP has to start thinking about ways to lengthen the players' careers. I can't imagine football players playing on cement, I can't imagine any other sport involving aggressive movements such as tennis being played on such aggressive surfaces such as ours. We are the only sport in the world making this mistake and it won't change."

Nadal also complained of the ATP's attempt to strictly enforce the 25-second rule between serves, saying it will not benefit the sport.

"People like to see great rallies, long matches, and for that to happen, the 25 seconds are not enough," he said. "If the ATP wants a sport which is faster but doesn't take into consideration a lot of strategy or great rallies, then it's right doing this. I think the players in the locker rooms are not very happy with that rule."

Nadal, who lost in the final of his first comeback tournament in Chile last week, said he was still not worried about wins and his main focus was to regain rhythm on the court.

"I need time, I need weeks of matches and practice," he said. "I'm not prepared to think about titles yet, I'm thinking day-to-day. After so many months without playing it's hard to think about titles."

Nadal said he is still feeling pain in his knee but it's getting better.

"There are days in which it hurts and it limits me physically, but there are days when it's better," he said. "During the bad days it's complicated. But it's positive because a month ago maybe 80 percent of the days were bad, now it's 70 percent of the days and next week or within a month it will probably be 50 percent."

Nadal dismissed changing his style to try to extend his career.

"I'm not that good to be able to reprogram my style, I only have one, it's virtually impossible to change it," he said. "I'm confident that my body will hold up. I'm not sure it will happen next week, or next year, but I'm confident that it will be like before again."

He said he wants to be fully fit to play at the 2016 Rio Olympics, which he acknowledged will likely be his last.

"Playing in 2016 is a long-term goal but it's very real," he said. "I will be working daily to make sure I can play in 2016 and play well."

Nadal won his first-round doubles tie with David Nalbandian on Tuesday, and will play his first singles game on Thursday.

“It’s been an unbelievable match to be a part of, but all I can feel now is disappointment; that’s it,” Djokovic said. “I congratulate my opponent because he showed the courage in the right moments and went for his shots and, you know, when he was a break down in the fifth, he made some incredible shots from the baseline.

“I congratulate him because that’s why he’s a champion. That’s why he’s been ruling Roland Garros for many years, and for me it’s another year.”

“I gave my best; I really did,” Djokovic said. “I really tried to come back. The third set wasn’t great at all. I just dropped physically. He used it. I managed to come back and start playing really well as the match was going on, but it wasn’t good enough.”

From Steffi's page:

I’m glad I taped today’s semifinal between Nadal and Djokovic because there are many points of the match that I will want to watch again. What an epic 5 set battle again from these incredible athletes! Nadal and Djokovic pushed each other, like so many times before, to their limits - both mentally and physical - in a match that could have gone either way at the end. Few words can capture the determination, guts and talent these 2 players showed, if you didn’t get a chance to watch, try to catch a replay. And now Nadal, who will be trying for his record 8th trophy at Roland Garros, plays a first time Grand Slam finalist 31-year old Ferrer. Ferrer, who played a superb tournament so far, kept his calm and deservedly beat Tsonga who unfortunately could not continue his great run in front of his home crowd.

From so far watching experiences on Nadal's style/strategy of play, I could summarize my views as below.

1) if any one else other than Nadal playing against Djokovic, they could be attempting Djokovic's forehand returns only 50%.but it's Nadal who could attempt any winners. In simple words, most of the winners from opponents became losers by Nadal.

2) Nadal is so defensive in his shots. 95% of time, he will just push the ball to post service line. That's the key for his success and he makes sure the opponent not attempting any smashes from service box and that time delay wil help Nadal to adjust his position to attend the next forehand/backend to-be-winner deliveries from opponents.

3) The rest 5% of the shots, that's where we all could see how effective Nadal's foot positioning and his offensive cross line fore hand winners! Unbelievable! When I was talking to one tennis coach last week, we talked about the best player tennis world so far produced in terms of foot adjustments on field. While I voted Nadal as best we seen, he replied "he could be one from men; but overall I would rate Steffi as be best in this aspect and keep Nadal as the second!". They both can run from left corner service line to a right corner of service line viceversa and then attempt for a cross court forehand. Beauty.

This is all the more remarkable considering the fact that Rafa's knee problems are secondary to a congenital foot deformity. To quote Uncle Toni [The Australian. August 18, 2012], "I have never spoken about this but Rafael had an injury in 2005 that was very serious." "The doctor said he cannot play any more. He has a congenital problem in his foot. He had to use special shoes and orthotics to change the way he lands with his feet. Because of having the orthotics, this has caused problems in his knees and his back. "The year he won the Australian Open in 2009, we couldn't finish one training session because of the pain. He couldn't finish one training session in the whole month of December because of the pain."

Nadal not bothered by Wimbledon fifth seeding

“The rankings say that these kind of things can happen. I know we are talking about Andy and Roger probably, but I don’t see them before quarter-finals and semi-finals. So I have a long way to work before that,” said Nadal on Saturday. “I’m number five in the world today, in the rankings. There is no discussion, It is completely fair that I am number five and David (Ferrer) is number four. That’s it,”

Steve Darcis, who beat two-time champion Nadal in straight sets on Monday, pulls out of Wimbledon!!

Steve Darcis, the 135th-ranked Belgian who beat two-time champion Nadal in straight sets on Monday in one of Wimbledon's greatest upsets, pulled out because of a right shoulder injury.

Darcis, who had been scheduled to play Lukasz Kubot of Poland, said he hurt his shoulder while diving for a shot in the first set against Nadal.

"After the match, a few hours after, I start to feel so much pain, I couldn't sleep that night," he said. "I saw the physio, the doctor, yesterday. They did a good job. It's a little bit better today. But no chance I can play. I cannot serve. It makes no sense to go on the court to withdraw after two games."

Darcis had become an overnight sensation after beating the eight-time French Open champion and holder of 12 Grand Slam titles.

"When you beat a guy like Rafa first round, you want to show more, you want to play more matches," Darcis said. "I was playing maybe the best tennis in my life here. Not to go on the court today, it's maybe the biggest disappointing thing I have to do."

http://www.dnaindia.com/sport/1853348/report-10-things-you-should-know-about-wimbledon-and-its-traditions

10 things you should know about Wimbledon and its traditions

1. Wimbledon is the is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and has been played since 1877. It is considered to be the most prestigious of all the four Grand Slams.

2. This is the only tournament that is still played on the sport's original surface-grass. Earlier, the Australian Open and US Open that are played on hard court now and French Open that is played on clay were played on grass. Hence, tennis is called lawn tennis.

3. Player have to strictly wear white at the tournament. The rules state, "No solid mass of colouring; little or no dark or bold colours; no fluorescent colours; preference towards pastel colours...and all other items of clothing including hats, socks and shoes to be almost entirely white."

Roger Federer who sported orange soles to his shoes during his first round match was pulled up by the organisers as they saw the shoes as flouting the rules.

This shows how strict the organisers are about the all-white apparel rule.

4. Spectators and players are offered strawberries and cream as the typical stand food at the tournament.

The New York Times reported that a librarian for the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum once told them that the strawberries date back to the first Wimbledon tournament in 1877. She said strawberries and tennis both signalled the arrival of summer.

5. Players are referred to as Mr, Miss and Mrs as per their marital status especially in the case of women.

For men, the chair umpires sometimes just say their names instead of Mr. But using Miss for all female players is still practised today at Wimbledon.

6. At Wimbledon, the ball boys and girls are known as BBGs and play a crucial role in the smooth running of the tournament, with a brief that a good BBG "should not be seen. They should blend into the background and get on with their jobs quietly."

Since 2005, BBGs work in teams of six, two at the net, four at the corners, and teams rotate one hour on court, one hour off for the day's play. Teams are not told which court they will be on so as to ensure the same standards across all courts.

7. The Centre Court has survived a War World II bombing and now boasts of a roof that prevents rain delays from causing scheduling problems during the tournament.

8. This is the only Grand Slam which is patronised by a Royal Family. The Queen of Britain often visits Wimbledon and meets the players.

The Royal Family seated in the Royal Box and players earlier had to courtesy al members of the family. But the tradition has been discontinued since 2003 by the Duke of Kent who is the President of the All England Club. Now only if the monarch or the Prince of Wales are present, players are expected to courtesy them.

9. Wimbledon does not have any sponsor advertising around its courts.

10. The tournament has a 'day of rest'. The middle Sunday of the Wimbledon fortnight is always a day off.

One of the remarkable things about him is, he's an incredibly hard worker... although in the past, there were a number of occasions when he didn't make it despite coming very close, he never got demoralised or disheartened... which is why his well-deserved win is even sweeter than other players'...

Because tennis is an expensive sport. It's not just as simple as going out there and enjoying himself, there's a whole entourage that has to accompany him, equipment and all that. And if a player is losing more often than not, even the drill of training everyday can get tiresome. And here I am only repeating observations many players from different sports have made around the time of retirement or after it. They said the monotony of training sapped them once they consistently failed to win.

However, Federer has already announced his desire to play in Brisbane international next year to warm up better for Aus Open 2014. He is also experimenting with a new racquet. So unless his mindset changes drastically, these strongly suggest he will play at least up to next year, if not longer. Nevertheless, his last hurrah, if there is to be one beyond Wimb 2012, may be near now. Steffi Graf lost badly through 1997 and took a break before coming back post surgery. But she only lasted a little beyond Wimb 99 anyway. Hopefully, Federer can have that kind of year one last time before he signs off but it's not written and it's going to be tough against this field.

#1 Nole and #2 Andy out of Cincy beaten by Isner and Berdych respectively. If Nadal wins this championship then he will become # 2.

"Chocolate" plays well but still loses to "the Bull"... (7-5, 4-6, 3-6)

I congratulate Roger for a valiant effort... Good luck to Rafa for the rest of the tournament!

Nadal gets the win. Was a very good match. Federer started losing his game after the second set. But anyways nothing lost as a Tennis enthusiast.

Federer will drop to number 7 next week. Guess it happens when you fail to defend any of the tourneys you won last year. But I still think Federer came out a better man from yesterdays match than say a month ago. Played with a lot of intensity in the first set and had chances to wrap it up in the second. So his chances of making the SFs in the USO are still bright according to me. As for Nadal, kudos to him.The momentum was all his with Federer looking down the barrel after the second. So another title in the offing for Nadal. Barring the sub-par Wimbledon stint, he's had a wonderful year.

Agreed! Even Roger himself thought so. "I can definitely take more things away from this week than I could for the last sort of three months," Federer said (after the match). "So I'm happy about that. That sets it up nicely for me for New York, I think." "Could have won tonight, should have won tonight, who knows?"

Roger Federer is still up there and not out, especially against Nadal. You never know what will happen taking Wimbledon into consideration when the likes of nadal and federer went down in the first 2 rounds under. But yes I would vote for Feddy in the last four. I would like Feddy to end on a high note especially USO and AO. Lets see. The matches between nadal vs federer and nadal vs djokovic and nadal vs Murray are always a treat and entertaining.

technically federer, djokovic and Murray are top players but nadal is just a little tad above these top players.

:confused2: I was pointing out the critics of nadal always saying that nadal is not the best in techniques when compared to the other top players. I was only giving a double thumbs up to nadal that he is little top above the other top players. How much better? A little better than the other players. There lies the difference in the nadal's game.

To the best of my recollection, Rafa Nadal has played John Isner three (3) times so far (2010 Indian Wells, 2010 Madrid Masters and 2011 French Open); and has won all those matches.

Oops more than 2 years...nadal will be facing a very fresh isner...guess there could be lots of improvements in the game of isner when he can upset the likes of djokovic and del potro.

During the whole match, Rafa had difficulty dealing with Isner's 140+ mph (225+ km/h) serves. The match was so close that it could have gone either way. Isner said a few days ago that beating Djokovic in the quarterfinals was the greatest moment in his tennis career, but his performance today was amazing too. At the end, patience and persistence helped Rafa win his first Cincinnati trophy. Congratulations to both players for a superbly played and thrilling match!

Some trivia:

It has been a while since there was a player from the USA in the top 20 of the ATP rankings. The Cincinnati Open lifts John Isner's ranking to #14.

During the presentation ceremony, John Barrett, the CEO of Western & Southern Insurance Company (sponsor of the tournament), told John Isner [who is 6' 10" (2.08 m) tall]: "John; you have raised this tournament to "new heights"! :) Most people in the crowd thought it was funny and applauded; but a few people booed!
