England will play three practice matches before the first Test when they arrive in India in October for the winter tour. England will play four Tests, which finishes on December 22 with the second Twenty20 before England return for the one-day series in early January.

The Test series will start in Ahmedabad on November 15 before moving to Mumbai, Kolkata and Nagpur making it England's longest in India since 1984-85. Three new venues - Rajkot (new stadium), Dharamsala and Ranchi, MS Dhoni's hometown - have been awarded ODIs with that series starting in Rajkot on January 11.

"This will be England's first full tour of India since 2008 and I am sure that cricket fans in both countries will be eagerly anticipating an exciting series of contests in all three formats of the game," ECB managing director Hugh Morris said.

Indian team for the first test - - M S Dhoni(c), V Sehwag, G Gambhir, S Tendulkar, V Kohli, Yuvraj, C Pujara, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, P Ojha, A Rahane, Harbhajan, Ishant Sharma, M Vijay, Z Khan

Not sure what Harbhajan has done to merit a place in the squad :banghead:

Bhajji won't be part of the Playing XI anyway. With no Raina or Badri, Yuvi will be assured of a place in the first test then.

5th November 2012, 01:35 PM
Yeah when we are sure he wont be in the playing XI why have him in the squad? Any other youngster could be a part of the squad and learn lots. Only people happy about this would be the Punjab CA, they can give a chance to some youngster in the next Ranji game

Stupid selection...why give options for a position where the current players are doing well....70 wickets in 5 matches and you want more option for that position.
The no.6 slot doesn't have any real option other than Yuvi (perhaps thats their plan), the only reason I can think of for Vijay being there is they didn't want Badri (a competition for the no.6 slot), painfully obvious.
We also needed more option for the fast bowlers, the last time we had 3 bowlers and 1 got injured, the captain is forced to play the other two even if he doesn't like that combination.

I can see where the selection of Harbhi coming from but 2 backup openers for a home test series :confused2: and Vijay over Mukundan :banghead: all the more with later's exploits against a full strength Eng side/100 in Kiwiland. with Zk's latest injury Pankaj Singh should have been called in//

Pitch was so flat during the last 2 days - Looking at the way Sehwag and Pujara blasted Swann & Patel (annan motha ball full toss pottaru!).
We need to wait and see how english players handle spin and turn in the next match. Looking at their first innings performance, looks like they can't.

And Boycott and Ian C are good in technical analysis of any match. Gavaskar and Ravi are irritating a lot these days. They are no way near the first two.

Completely agree with Pujara for ODI's. Infact he has an equally impressive list A record. Gambhir living on borrowed time and failure in the England home series will be curtains.

India all set to lose this match here. Really have to give credit to the English. Beautiful bowling effort from them following up from the good batting efforts of KP and co. From the Indian pov, it is good to see Gambhir getting some runs. As for their bowling effort, I would say it was ordinary considering how well the English spinners have bowled on this wicket. Always thought that turners were a double edged sword and the Indian performance with the bat has just proved me right.

Excellent performance from England. They are proving now that they can also shine in Indian soil and challenge India.

Kolkata pitch curator replaced by BCCI

Eden Gardens pitch curator, Prabir Mukherjee, has been replaced after he refused to prepare a rank turner for the upcoming third Test. Indian skipper MS Dhoni had requested a pitch that would turn from day one.

Mr.Mukherjee has been a veteran curator at the Eden Gardens and he has prepared pitches for 14 Tests in the past. He has been replaced by Ashish Bhowmick of the Tripura Cricket Association. Mr. Bhowmick is also a member of the BCCI's Pitches Committee. Following the 10 wicket loss in Mumbai, Dhoni persisted with the stand that a rank turner be prepared for the Kolkata Test as well. The third Test starts on 5th December and the series is tied 1-1.

Mr. Mukherjee's first brush with controversy came during the 2010 series between India and South Africa when he allegedly refused to heed requests from the BCCI to prepare a turning track. This prompted MS Dhoni to express his disappointment at not getting a turning track. Mr. Mukherjee, on his part, denies that such a demand was ever made.

Irrespective of the results, Dhoni is making valid points. A pitch that starts spinning early means the toss is out of the equation, we will have more tests that end in results instead of only 1 in 2/3 ending in a result.
Its not Dhoni's strategy that failed, its the team(including him) that let down the strategy.

This is a leadership crisis for sure...but Dhoni is not the main problem. I am not defending Dhoni but he is the best captain we have, there is not much he can do as a batsman when he comes in at 150/5.

Is there an alternative for the captaincy? There is not a single established player in the team whose place is not in question.
Pujara is still raw(< 10 matches) and Kohli's batting has been a huge let down in this series.
The leadership problem starts at the selection committee. How come there was only one option for no.6 slot...thats the only position thats open and you give the captain only one option.

Dhoni caused a huge commotion in the press just for asking spinning tracks.....I am not sure what would have happened had he called for dropping players like Sehwag, Gambir and Tendulkar(I know I will be damn p*ssed)
I don't know what to say about Tendulkar...looks like time has caught up....he was the best batsman in 2011 and its only natural you give him more opportunities. This year has been horrendous for him and he is still the best indian batsmen in the ICC rankings....speaks volume about the rest. IMO he should exit gracefully, there is not much he can do to this team which has such arrogant players like Sehwag, Gambir, Yuvi(looks like he is genuine when he says he wants to play test but he isnt cut out for this format) and Kohli who take their place in the team for granted.

The less we talk about bowling and fielding the better, even when we reached No.1 except for a few good spells from Zaheer and spinners doing well in Indian conditions there was nothing to write about.

Selection committee should drop Sehwag, Gambir, Yuvraj.
Tendulkar must retire (I am sad to say this he can still play better than the replacements but it won't do good in the long run for the team).
Ashwin needs to be dropped....he lacks the patience for a test bowler...he should work on that. I am not sure whether we have a replacement. Not Bhaji please.
Our fast bowling department...there is too much of load on Zaheer(quit one of the formats please) Ishant, Dinda, Awana, Irfan its not that bad...we atleast have a few players in the bench.

My 11 will be
Rahane, Mukund,Pujara,Badri,Kohli,Tiwary,Dhoni,Ashwin(I cant think of anyone else), Zaheer, Ishant, Ohja.

Sema verila irukaen thats why ivlo periya post, had to get this of my mind, sorry for the rant.

Edit: Regarding Dhoni being captain, yes he should be phased out. Give Pujara/ Kohli more time, groom someone and let Dhoni go.

Felt - operative word. Subjective opinion. Will evaporate in the face of statistics. Reflective of personal biases. Or what have you.

I am so glad England has bounced back in the subcontinent. They looked pretty bad in Dubai.
I am still quite disappointed with the way they crumbled against S Africa. Ashes will be interesting.

We are overreacting with respect to team's performance. We were below par average with Dravid/Laxman in the past two years and without them I think this is expected.

But my question is we have Sehwag, Kohli, Y.Singh or even Sachin as part time bowlers. Why that Dhoni uses only the main bowlers when they could not take any wickets? I remember Kumble was using Sehwag frequently in Australia. Spin bowlers delivering 40 overs each without taking any wickets and you don't try with your part timers, something is seriously wrong with Dhoni!

Hello brother, not just KP. Everyone failed. Only Cook 'stood tall and rose to the challenge'.
Second test - my MoM would have been Monty. KP of course put them in a commanding position, but Cook's knock is not to be forgotten, like his Premadasa knock has been forgotten.

+1 All the dismissals in the second innings [ except Sachin ] are due to ODI/T20 shots. Currently except Pujara none has that temperament, hopefully Kohli learns that soon.

What we miss are

1. Strong openers
2. Strong lower middles order
3. Very good fast bowlers
4. Good spinners.
5. Strong leader.

Currently only one down looks satisfactory.

A fighting Virat Kohli century and an equally dogged 99 from Dhoni.....Couldn't have asked for a better setting for the future of Indian Cricket.

1. Hand over the captaincy to Kohli and let MSD play as the wicket keeper.
2. Time to bid adieu to Sachin and a farewell ODI Series against Pakistan would be great. Sachin began his cricket against Pakistan and would be perfect to finish against them.
3. Gambhir should go, just simply go.
4. Sehwag can be India's opener for now and can be paired with a technically sound opener @ the other end. Rahane maybe as I am not yet convinced with Abinav. Vijay seems to be too casual for Test Cricket.
5. Rohit should be groomed for a middle order slot in Test Cricket and Suresh Raina can play a big role in T20 Cricket and so does Yuvraj.
6. Bring in Sreesanth just to spice up the bowling and also add some much needed aggression to the team, that @ the moment looks as flat as the Rajkot pitch. Sree along with Kohli can form a mini team, just how Bhajji aided Dada in that front :)
7. IMO, we can groom R.Jadeja as an allrounder and can hand him a permanent place ahead of P.Ohja. I know, Ohja is India's most successful bowler in this series but he is just an accurate bowler, who neither turns nor has the bounce that a tall spinner usually has. Jadeja has more long term use.
8. Badrinath should just walk in and take Laxman's place @ 6 ahead of Manoj Tiwari. Badri has a good part of 3-4 years still left in him.

Team for the Australia Test Series:

1. Virender Sehwag
2. Ajinka Rahane
3. Cheteswar Pujara
4. Virat Kohli (Capt)
5. Rohit Sharma
6. Subramaniyam Badrinath
7. MS Dhoni
8. R.Jadeja
9. R.Ashwin
10. I.Sharma
11. S.Sreesanth.

Reserves: M. Tiwari, P.Ohja, V.Aaron, Parthiv Patel.

ICC Should probably scrap 50 overs cricket just to make life a little easier for cricketers. Ranji trophy should be the breeding space for test cricket and IPL can serve the same for T20. Honestly, there is no place for 50-50 any more.

Interesting suggestions, Mukund seemed very convincing to me, he played against England in England which has been a difficult task even for the top teams.
Push Rahane to 2nd/3rd down and have Mukund open the innings. Rohit needs to prove himself atleast in the ODI's before making a claim in test cricket, he is too casual, better than Vijay still he tends to throw away his wicket.
Sreesanth hasn't been great or doing anything in the domestic cricket. Sandeep Sharma has been very good, or try Awana, Varun. We will need 3 good fast bowlers for overseas tours, we don't have even one.
Not convinced by Ashwin, his bowling has been poor, not picking wickets and not being economical. Ohja is the better bowler, but Jadeja is also a left arm bowler.
Too bad for Badri, he will not get a chance but I agree with you there. Maybe Rohit will fight it out with Tiwary.
Sehwag really needs to start firing more often, he is a huge impact player but the impact innings are becoming rare.

Completely disagree with giving captaincy to Kohli, try it out in T20 or ODI and then make the changes in test.

Match out of India's hands.

IMO Dhoni should be sacked for tests as Captain. Let him continue for one dayers and T20s. Once he becomes another player in the team, his batting performance will be assessed seriously and he will have the challenge through others like Dinesh, Saha etc. Even Utthappa is trying to be a keeper/batsman . He can be given chance. Poor guy , not getting his chances unlike Raina, Rohit ( the eternal IPL specialist ).

Ok , we lost in England and Australia but losing at home is something which MSD is answerable / accountable for which he should voluntarily step down . These things can happen only in Srilanka where the captains take moral responsibility. Srilankan cricketers like Sanga, Mahela etc show remarkable maturity while accepting losses and resign ! India should learn from them. I think except India, no other country is dealing with the captains like this unique way !

The question to Dhoni should be : Is he really inspiring his team mates as a Captain( for tests ) ? Just this 99 doesnt absolve him from the losses.

Ashwin may face some pressure for not being consistent at home .
