Dear All,
The following post was made by me in the various internet music groups, where I am active.I thought I should share this with all of you also.I hope you are able to download all the precious music files and also give your response on my write-up.
Cheers,
Sivaraman.

RAGA APPRECIATION/CHARUKESI:

1. "Charukesi" the "Eternal Enchantress" could best sum up the flavour and mood of this great melakarta Raga.

2.She can woo you with sringara rasa,("Pasyati disi disi",the Jayadeva Ashtapathi- hear BMK singing this with great, soulful, charm-sr.no.01,Vocal Vol.1) or "Manmatha leelaiyai" by MKT from the Tamil film "Haridas"- sr.no.19.Vocal,Volume.07. "Tamil film songs", or again,"Vasantha mullai" by TMS from the tamil film,"Sarangadara".(sr.no.08.-Vocal Volume.07."Tamil film songs")

3.She can also enthrall you with supreme devotional fervour,as in Saint Thyagaraja's "Adamodi Galade" and Swathi Thirunal's "Krupaya Palaya"( hear numerous renditions of this in my vocal and instrumental volumes by eminent carnatic and hindustani musicians).

4.She has also been effectively used in films with both classical and folk music touches by the "Isai Gyani",Maestro,Ilayaraja and the "Isai Puyal",A.R.Rehman, and the Hindi film music directors like Kalyanji-Anandji,Laxmikant-Pyarelal,Shankar-jaikishan ,Madan Mohan and Ravindra Jain( hear many songs of these MD's in my film music albums)

5.Charukesi has a universal appeal and has been imported into not only Hindustani classical music, but has also found it's way into western classical ethnic music(e.g.Franz Schubert from his innovative First piece "Allegro Molto Moderato" from his Op 90) (hear sr.no.01,Instrumental volume no.5) and :

Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov,the Russian composer:

"Procession of the Sardaar," from his "Caucasian Sketches for Orchestra."
(Hear a recording of this by Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy
:sr.no.02,Instrumental volume no.5-sr.no.02).Grateful acknowledgements to Sri Rajan Parikar for these two clips.

6.Charukesi is the 26th Melakartha raga, falling in the "Bana" Chakra.
It's aarohana/avarohana are:
Aa: S R2 G3 M1 P D1 N2S
Av: SN2D1PM1G3R2S

7.It is also known as "Tarangini" in the "Dikshitar Asampoorna Mela System",with :
Aa: S R2 G3 P D1 N2 D1 S
Av: S D1 P M1 G3 R2 S

OR

Aa: S R2 G3 P D1 N2 D1 P D1 S
Av: S D1 P G3 R2 S G3 M1 R2 G3 S

8.It is one of the melakarta ragas, which was not popular in the early days of concert singing, even though,Saint Thyagaraja's."Ada modi galade" was in existence for a few centuries. It became one of the popular ragas for concert singing after the popularity of the Swathi Thirunal krithi,"Krupaya Palaya sowre" in concert platforms.

9.It is a raga lending itself to compositions of great lyrical beauty, and capable of holding the listener in an enthralling appeal with it's simple arrangement of swaras and great emotional impact .

10.It is one of the main ragas chosen by musicians in concert platforms, often with very elaborate expositions lasting from 30 to 60 minutes, including, alapana, sangathis, neravals, intricate swaraprastharas, and also RTP's.It is usually sung in the first half of the concert if it is the main raga, or in the latter half of the concert if it is of a light "bhajan" variety.

11.So,friends,join me in partaking of the nectar of various moods and flavours of this enchanting melakarta raga.Go on a memorable musical journey.

Charukesi - ArOhaNam : PoorvAnga (sa ri ga ma) is ShankarAbharanam and UttarAnga (pa da ni Sa) is tOdi.
Some more points :

Charukesi - AvarOhaNam : PoorvAnga (Sa ni da pa) is tOdi and the uttarAnga (ma ga ri sa) is ShankarAbharanam.

This rAg's 'ma' moorchanai (shruti bEdam) takes to Gowri manohari

This rAg's 'ni' moorchanai (shruti bEdam) becomes Vachaspathi.
