DOWRY FREE VILLAGE

Nilambur-- a village in North Kerala will be declared as the first Dowry free village (in India) by the Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, day after tomorrow (8th March 2010) in connection with the International Womens Day.

By this, does the CM admit that his gov is incapable of controlling this illegal crime in the rest of the state?

Shameful happening -that such should be made a show off- displaying how poor are our admin in law enforcement!

What next, "murder free village" "rape free village" etc celebrations?

There are no two opinions that the village has to be commended, appreciated etc

However, I have a problem in a CM coming and declaring as such. That is, in a land where this evil is illegal, as much as rape / murder / illicit liquor / eve-teasing etc are illegal.

In a case of incapability to enforce law, that fellow should resign and step down as he is the head - rather than celebrating that at least in one place he could enforce the law of the land How stupid!

we have the home minister Kodiyeari-so unpopular-who said-

"We will make bombs even in front of the police station"

recently CPI leader Ismail said--"if any one dares to touch our building at Munnar-we will see that his hands will be chopped off"

also...in the evening denying the same statement
the channels showed these two visuals in succession


around 10 years ago C M E K Nayanar reacting to a rape case at Kovalam-
said

"it is common and frequent in USA and is like sipping tea"

when we have such irresponsible administrators like this...raajyam eppadi uruppadum?

@app_engine : While I do agree to your point of view, why don't we equate this to, say, the RTC awarding a safe driver trophy to a driver who has had a specified term of accident free driving?

Does that mean that the RTC acknowledges that the other drivers are reckless? I don't think so. If the people in this village have indeed abolished the evil concept of dowry, then kudos to them.

I think, while the CM is trying to gain some mileage out of publicizing this, if that helps at least another village to follow suit, then I think it is worth it. Don't you think so?

Interesting to see your accident-free driver analogy.

Personally, I feel this is a different case for a couple of reasons :
a) Accident is not necessarily a crime. It does have impact on lives but difficult to call it illegal / social evil etc. In many cases, the driver is not even at fault ("no fault insurance").

b) Gathering statistics / verifying facts and certifying etc in the case of dowry is impossible unlike road accidents that are better documented / verified etc.

Once again, I appreciate the villagers if they have taken such a resolution at this point of time. (Again, these kind of things are difficult to certify - what is declared may not be what is actual, whether it will be followed when a marriage actually takes place, how many years have they followed this norm etc).

In any case, I'm not positive that if CM certifies that a village is great, others will emulate the example of that village With the kind of reputation politicans have today, it won't have any impact at all IMO.

laws will not eliminate crime. it might help to bring down the crime rate or to keep in control.
