Recently thalaivar has been delving strongly into jazz with albums like Madhiya Chennai and now Paa. He has been using them frequently as a synth accompaniment, a fusion with another genre like rock or totally a backing in a folk fashion even before this albums.

Can anyone name songs which uses jazz in some way(atleast the length of an interlude) of thalaivar cause i want to keep collections of them and perhaps intiate discussions on this topic. Preferrably the more unknown and perhaps yet to be analysed ones(excluding Mumbai Express).

One which i think was never really thought of that much is perhaps this glorious and rollicking tune - Ennada Ninaicha - AOKK

Main genre being jazz
Ennadi Meenakshi - Ilamai Oonjaladugirathu
Day By Day - Honest Raj
Unnai Patri Sonaal - Mathiya Chennai
Mumbai Express(Almost all songs)
Niram pirithu - Time
Madhu - Intha Ulagil
Thanga Kili - Manam Virumbuthey Unnai
Kaa Kaa - Julie Ganapathy
Idhu Oru Nilaa Kaalam - Tik Tik Tik

Jazz as an accompaniment
Ennama Kannu - Mr Bharath
Unn Vaazhvey Oru Kathaiyaagalam - Mathiya Chennai
Mudhi Mudhi and all its versions - Paa
Cheeni Kum saxophone theme - Cheeni Kum
Engey Irundhai Isaiyey(Second interlude, Raja sung) - Ajantha
Pelli ki Mundhu Okasaari - Dharma Kshetram

I am not sure if this fits in jazz but from the same movie another song, a rather sensuous one Unnalae Thookam - AOKK The suspicious part is the interlude and the way the stanzas after the interludes are orchestrated. Confused

Hulk,

A song on which I wrote a blog post, which I think is jazz, especially the way the rhythm and the interludes work, is 'naa paruvam' from a Telugu movie 'Yugandhar'. This was probably released in 1978 or 1979. So Raja's brush with jazz goes a long way back.

Yup and there are many songs where jazz plays like some sort of normal accompaniment where you can never guess them. Its this type of songs i am looking for. Very Happy

Hulk,

Check out the song in TFM Pick of the week thread, posted by Neel. A song titled 'yAr mAmanO'. Very short song with one interlude which is very jazzy. You can include this is your jazz list. As I have been saying Raja has been using jazz from late 70s itself. This song posted is a 1979 song

I think the best of the lot is ennadi meenakshi which itself was around 1977 or 1978. Thats the earlier thalaivar has delved into jazz as far as i know.

Lets keep this thread as the list is going to expand beyond infinity. LOL

Mumbai Express Exactly I think Thalaivar's most jazz centric album which really divided jazz itself into various sub genres. Clap
