The larger than life entertainer Michael Jackson who crossed all the borders and boundaries and captivated the hearts of music lovers around the world, captivated the hearts of high school students, college students and all world music lovers in India too starting the early 1980s. The first MJ song I heard was Beat It, way back in 1984 performed by the college band of Thanjavur Medical College. I was simply taken by the energy of the song and the instant joy it created listening. Those days foreign music audio tapes were only available in big cities and were quite expensive. That limited the exposure to foreign music Indian population had. Michael Jackson's music even broke through that barrier. A rich kid would buy a tape and play it for all others who did not have a boombox. And those who had a boombox would make a copy of the tape. There were also record stores where you can have songs recorded to tapes, a practice that is very rare now. Nothing stopped the love for music and entertainment that Indian people had regardless of language or genre.
Being the fusion music it is, Tamil/Indian film music has borrowed or taken inspiration from music world over, especially heavily from American music from Jazz, Rock, Pop to Hip Hop. Today we will pay tribute to Michael Jackson for all the joy he brought to us over the years. We have two songs of the same tune, heavily inspired by MJ's Billie Jean.

IR paid direct tribute to MJ, the song "Lovely Leela" is greatly inspired by one of the fastest MJ songs, really just simply superb song, Smooth Criminal. I think IR derived most of the rapid staccato like rhythms from MJ without a doubt. |
